Torture Scene Controversy - I Don't Get It

I hated that mission, torturing people is crossing the line, even in a game...

No. It's a game. A game where you can mass murder everyone you see. It amazes me how people say they crossed the line. Don't you guys realize what game you're playing?

yikes, that's the first mission i got a 100% gold on my first try. slowly pulled out a tooth, whacked him with the wrench, dumped the gas on his face and then fried his nipples...just what kind of person am i? lol.

the only mission i found to be torture was having to do yoga for five minutes.

this is the what? 15th grand theft auto game to be made? whats the body count if you add that up? but lets all freak out about the one guy, who you don't even kill. or at least i drove him to the airport and dropped him off.

Exactly. I mean, CoD:MW2's airport scene was MUUUUUCH more graphic (and realistic) than this, and both games are about practically indiscriminate killing anyway. If you really have a problem with it, just remember it's a game. Like with a scary movie that people say "just close your eyes", just mash X (or A, for you 360 users) and switch to a different TV channel, and you'll pass the mission. Or put it on mute to not hear screaming, and you're good.

This is 'mature' content, meant to be experienced by those who are 'mature' enough to handle it. And if the name "Grand Theft Auto" and the ESRB rating description doesn't clue you in to things getting a little messy, you don't have to buy or play the game. Simple as that.

they crossed the line by making people play a torturing mission that wasnt necessary and didnt to me have any impact on making the game good. making people play one mission that to my own words was very sick .

Are you people seriously bitching about a mission? Wow next time dont but the game... You dont cry when a mad man runs around the woods with a chainsaw but you cry when a animated man is tortured... DONT WATCH THE NEWS YOU MIGHT FAINT

well for me it was a bit disturbing, i mean, mentally, imagine that you were that person, sitting in the chair and waiting for the worse thing to happen. For example you were there and you had little to no information about who they were supposed to look for, or you were the person they THOUGHT had info on the person they want. it was a bit harsh and offending but it was fun.. though i was very careful since i might kill that guy :O

I didn't mind. Who gives a f*ck if he didn't deserve it, he's not real.

And also, how does a torture scene in a game make people cringe? It's all just fake 3D models...

It's part of GTA's satire on certain topics. He didn't deserve it, in fact he was willing to give the info and he mentions that after it's done...It's actually a message saying that torture isn't necessary when you think a little.

And also, they're 3D models on a screen...

If you weren't the slightest bit disturbed by the torture mission, you are most likely just too young to fully grasp the concept of what was happening, and also the message Rockstar was trying to portray with the entire scene.

Or you could be a sociopath. Either way, I'm concerned. I'm not writing Congress about it so don't get your panties in a bunch... but video games should be about entertainment. Torture is not (inherently) entertaining, and if you find it to be, you should probably keep that to yourself.

In a sad way torturing someone doesn't bother me the slightest bit.

Honestly IF I were to get payed to torture somebody I would probably do it. I don't really "feel" for people. We're the scum of the earth. But that's irrelevant. The "torture" scene wasn't even meant to be taken seriously it was humorous and I laughed my ass off the entire time you gotta be really dense to not see the humor in that entire situation and if not well than I ain't got the slightest clue why you're even playing GTA.... But either way that wasn't even that bad. Ooohhh he got a couple teeth yanked, a banged up knee and a little gas in his mouth and eyes then a little electrocution in a VIDEO GAME.... -_-

I did a second play through and you can avoid the torture if you want. I did it by mistake by just sniping the mark from the start since I know who he was. Mike shoots and him and Dave are like I guess we got him, yeah f*ck it we got him.

I shot him when he said.left handed and ended the mission. Had to start again and I killed the right guy lol

I played through it yesterday and thought it was completely overblown. Unfortunately, we as a society are becoming way too f*cking sensitive and through doing so, we will be cutting down our freedoms of speech for the sake of not offending anyone (it's already happening, really). Rockstar and South Park seem to be the only BIG entertainment players who don't give a sh*t who they offend. I mean, Family Guy, Simpsons, etc. all take a side, GTA and SP don't. That's why they're the best of the best.

I'm 17 years and that scene had no effect on me what so ever.

I know the world is a dirty place, and playing a f*cking video game with f*cking pixels and 3D Models dont have affect on me.

Oh no, a 3D model getting his teeth pulled out or a sledge in his balls.

This is the reason why we should be more careful what we put in games like this because there going to be people under the age playing them . I have pointed this out many times the torture mission is totally not necessary like many other things in the game they should clean up some parts of the game like paying for sex .

Trevor is a psychopath with homoerotic tendencies. It couldn't been a lot worse. He could have shoved a wrench up the man's ass to get information out of him. We got something somewhat less vulgar and it's honestly for the better.

OK, so I've heard that many reviewers have found the scene controversial and even some say they found it uncomfortable to play through.

I played that mission today and completed it 100%. I don't see why some people think it should be skipable or that it shouldn't be in the game full stop. I didn't feel uncomfortable playing it and I'm not sure why anyone else would (assuming they're OK with the general content in GTA). Torture scenes in games, TV and movies aren't exactly new or rare at all, so I'm quite surprised.

I think Rockstar wanted it to be uncomfortable, at least to people who find those types of situations uncomfortable. It makes for an interesting unique experience.

I didn't mind that scene that much. (Spoiler)

It's not nearly as bad a when Molly gets sucked into the jet engine and comes out as a red mist.

I think after the torture was interesting when

Trevor took him to the airport instead of killing him.

People who say that oh they are just 3D models and why should I feel uncomfortable it's just a game don't really know what empathy is. Putting yourself in someone else's shoes. I'm not saying that scene was wrong in the game though, totally fine with it but I did find it uncomfortable, especially when Trevor hit the guy with the big ass wrench.

Some people find things like that offensive because they know people or have been through that situation themselves. Which is understandable.

Some people are like "oh noes dis dunt look very nice how mean :( VIDEO GAMES ARE TO BLAME FOR EVERYTHING!" and deserve to be wiped off this planet.

I didn't find anything wrong with it. It's commentary more than anything else, and in the grand scheme of things, the character Trevor does show remorse

in how he chooses to let him live, I suspect it had less to do with simply saying "f*ck the Man" and empathy seeped in

but look at me speculating on the motivations of an assortment of code, meshes, pixels, etc.

But if you have trouble with stuff like that, I can't honestly understand why you'd be playing GTA: V in the first place. The franchise has long ago set it's moral precedent.

I did cringe at the part when Trevor pulled the guys tooth out, you could hear the tooth slowly ripping off the gums and root.

Drawing agony out of someone is not enjoyable to me. I felt concern, not concentration. It also felt completely unnecessary and unrealistic.

I wasn't entertained by it. But I understand that entertainment isn't the point; it's not torture porn. If you're simply treating the torture scene as "shock entertainment" and are aghast at its inclusion, you're missing the point.

The point is that it shows how poor torture is as a technique and the kind of people who resort to it. As Trevor says, torture is worthless: it's been proven many times that torture has a very low rate of success because people will say just about anything to stop the pain. Trevor enjoyed it, but he admits that he engaged in torture because he's basically a nutcase who enjoys torturing people, not because he thought it was going to help.

It's also a commentary on the kind of people who think it's worthwhile: sociopaths and psychopaths. The man they picked up was innocent and willing to answer any question they wanted, but instead he spent 6 weeks being mutilated without ever being asked a straight question that he could actually answer, and then he was tortured anyways after answering just because they wanted to "confirm it." Steve Haines, Karen, and Trevor all engage in torture, and all of them are deranged psychopaths/sociopaths who seem to take enjoyment in it.

It's social commentary, not entertainment. Making the player engage in the torture personally instead of just watching it is meant to make them feel uncomfortable with it, especially with the knowledge that they're needlessly torturing an innocent man. Not to mention that it would be a lot more boring if the torture was just a series of cutscenes.

Given some of the comments on various threads some people must jack off to this sort of thing.

The scene was fine because it made you do it using a person that doesn't give crap. But if a person gets enjoyment doing it then they must be worse than Trevor because at least he regretted it afterwards.

Well I could understand why people would find it confronting . Personally I think it's one if the most disturbing scenes in the series' history.

You have to understand that even if it's just a game some people may react differently to you or I. It's just human nature really.
