Nigerian Keith
it's really rubbish and detracts from the game massively. i've just done a heist and felt liek i didn't really do anything at all. I didn't feel like i had a great deal of control over the way it went down. First of all, why was my driving expert, the man with a driving special move, using a sniper rifle whilst my man with a shooting special move was running about on a ship? I didn't get a feel of who i was supposed to be and then it just forced me to be franklin anyway. Completely pointless.
ThatRandomGuy42
I thought it was done remarkably well. I allows you more insight into what's going on in a mission. It does give you more control by the way. Some choices are questionable, but most are pretty well done.

SLUGFly
Actually, I loved the switching. The only flaws, first that I auto-switched by accident every time I tried to shrink my mini-map. Second, I want to make MY character now that I'm done the story. I don't give a sh*t about Trevor, Michael and Franklin; they're assholes.
FasterThanYou
During missions is rubbish. It´s a cheap way to avoid ugly moments.
Boxman108
Eh, I find it more useful in some missions than in others. Particularly when you need different vantage points and depending on which weapons you have for each different character.

Spitfirex007
The switching of the characters is one of the things I love about GTA5. It only forces you to switch a handful of times.. It allows you to get different views and control each battle in a different aspect. When not in mission, it's just comical.
ASIAN LAWYER
it's primary goal isn't to give you freedom, it's clearly there to allow more gameplay variation in missions. Edited September 22, 2013 by ASIAN LAWYER
robbo216
I agree to an extent, it's quite nice to be able to do a variation of jobs on a mission, but sometimes I'm actually having a lot of fun as one character and it forces me to change and do something I'm not interested in or the mission is failed. It should give choice, the way they make you do things it feels like the game is doing the mission for you.
XTGNecro
Its also fun when you make all 3 characters hold miniguns. They just destroy everything with it.

scipio1st
I love having 3 characters. They are all so different. Switching between them makes the action more entertaining as its like a film rather than just a game.
SilencedScream
I like seeing the different roles necessary, as opposed to only getting a small slice of the action. That said, I feel like they could've been done a little better. As OP pointed out, it's kind of odd that the man known for driving and boosting cars is used as a hitman and sniper when there's already someone with a weapon specialty. WinterEdit
Well, in my opinion, I have only one word to say: No. Have you seen any other games to have character switches? If you have, tell me one which is more fluent/better in the switches than GTA V. It provided some variety to the game. Not just in heists and missions, but in free roam too... it's interesting to see e.g. Trevor to wake up having a hang-over at different places each time... how did he manage to get on a mountain wearing a dress with some beer/another alcohol anyway...? Better not to ask too many questions.
SprayNpray
i don't mind the switching too much, but i can see your point. the biggest benefit of switching for me: when i do a solo mission and when i complete it i end up in the middle of goddamn no-where, i can just switch characters so i don't have to drive for 10 minutes to get back to civilization. Tsori
The times when the participants seem to be out of their role is generally due to the story, franklin for example has no committed dedication to most of the jobs they are forced to do, so sending him in personally just because he's better with a gun makes no sense. Franklin quite often takes the role of getaway driver, however the missions rarely allow you to get away that easily. Plus if you follow the prompts in the main story youl find that Michael becomes a better pilot than Trevor. ( since your encouraged to do flight school with him, which bumps his flight up to 100) Outside of missions is where he swapping shines, due to the points mentioned in other posts here
