Michael's Sweetheart Deal

I've jut got to the mission were all three main characters work together for the first time and I'm wondering what the exact nature of the deal was between Michael and the FIB which placed him on witness protection. There was obviously some corruption somewhere but I've missed the exact details. If I should know by this point in the story any info would be greatly appreciated

Michael went to the FIB to cut a deal to get out of his criminal life with a score, while "giving" his friends Trevor and Brad. He gave Dave, (His handler in the game) the break of his career by faking his death in exchange for a new life for his family.

Basically what happened was

Dave and his boys shot Michael and Brad. Brad died and Michael survived. Michael told Dave he would give him some cash to relocate him and his family and Dave accepted since it benefited him both financially and professionally (he was known as the agent who took down two of the robbers). He never sold anybody out though (which is what I think you're lead to believe for most of the story) he told Trevor to run and Brad was already dead so his only remaining priority was to look after his family. As the years went by he thought Trevor had wound up dead since he was such a maniac which is why he never went looking for him. The only reason Trevor is pissed off with him is that he lied to him for so long.. it's kind of understandable to a rational human but Trevor is anything but.

Well, if there's actually a fault in storyline's game is that the purposes of characters and missions are often missed. That's one of the main criticisms i point at GTA V. A lot of the story pieces are never clear. It ends up being a bit confusing, but it's okay, you end up understanding it all sooner or later.

I could have sworn from the conversation Michael

had with Dave that it was a set up to get one of Michael's partners (at first I thought Trevor but then came to the conclusion that Michael was to give up Brad).

Yeah that's what I mean by the player being lead to believe that Michael sold out his buddies. It's never really explained properly so we kind of have to connect the dots ourselves
