If GTA Doesn't Strive To Be Realistic, Then Why...

Obviously every video game has it's own balance of realism and fantasy to allow for fun gameplay. GTA V draws some illogical lines though.

 

Why do they base the city on a real city?

 

Why do they base the weapons on real weapons?

 

Why do they base the vehicles on real vehicles?

 

Why are the characters and pedestrians created to look real?

 

Why must the characters hurdle realistic challenges in the course of their heists?

 

Why are the sounds made to sound realistic?

 

Why is there a limited supply of money/why do things cost money?

 

The list goes on and on...

GTA has never striked me as wanting to be realistic GAMEPLAY wise, par GTA 4.

 

The action has always felt arcadey to me, the driving in comparison to other games has always felt arcadey. The world that they are in is a certain way so that the story works and the scene for that story is right, a non serious universe would lead to a Saints Row type of deal. What do you expect on this front? Gangsters on mars? It makes far more sense for the type of stories Rockstar want to tell to be in settings like LA, what would you do instead? When you carry that on it then makes sense for other things to coexist parallel to the real world (weapons, cars etc).

 

But just because the universe they choose to create their game in is based on realistic things, does not mean that the gameplay is going to be something that strives for that or even should strive for that.

 

GTA having the non 100% realistic feel to it (without going to far into the sillyness like saints) is what gives it success. It gives us this realistic world and goes ''DO WHAT YOU WANT''. You can drive cars at crazy speeds and it controls like you are in a movie, it's not realistic but it's fun and gives a sense of speed. Your characters have special abilities, you can survive crazy crashes, you can take on 50+ cops and hide behind a bush and get away. Block a freeway off with a bus and cause a 60 car chain explosion, hand off prostitutes to cannibalistic cults, hunt alien artifacts and do 20 consecutive barrel rolls ending with a dive bomb into pedestrians.

 

If it was realistic to the point people campaigning on that side want the game would f*cking suck. It wouldn't have the charm or magic the franchise has, it needs that silliness and it needs the quirks in gameplay that make it feel the way it feels. Just because you have realistic environments doesn't mean the gameplay suits being straight laced and hyper realistic. It never has with GTA.

Why is there so much goofy and unrealistic sh*t if they want the game to be like a real city?

Why are the weapons not one shot if not to the head? Why is there no body damage (broken legs etc)? Why is bulled drag over distance not realistic?

Why do the vehicles handle like arcade games in all but one installment?

Why do you think characters look decent in a game that's the last big game for this generation? Why don't they look like sh*t?

Why are there so many over the top explosions, why is the response from cops so bad during some major incidents?

Why aren't the sounds sh*t?

Why are they limiting money? Surely it's not due to the lack of things to buy til october...

 

You answered everything yourself, it's about getting a balance. They have their balance and it obviously works, they don't need to make anything more realistic just because it's has stuff that conflicts logically. It's a f*cking game.
