What does Lester mean by "he went quiet"?

Ok, so during a mission for Lester where everybody's trying to put a crew together. Lester makes this reference to I would have to guess: Niko Bellic. He says, "There was this Eastern European making moves in Liberty City, But nah, he went quiet."?? I just wanna know: what does he mean by that??? Is he saying that Niko's dead now or something? Or that he moved out of Liberty City?? I just wanna know more about what Lester meant by that!! Thanks.

The Notorious MOB

I don't think he means he's dead it just means he gave up on the life of crime. Niko lost a lot in GTA IV and untimately realised that crime doesn't pay I.e. all the money in the world can't heal his pain.

Packie does say that he's "probably dead by now" but even then I think it's just speculation on his part. There were a lot of people gunning for him (and Packie) at the end of IV so it's kind of a safe assumption.

Its just one of them "knowing" comments they place in the game,a little sarcastic nod to us the gamer,as if to acknowledge that GTAIV didnt reach the heights of other games and that they wont be revisiting it.Thats how i percieved it anyways

...what

the f*ck are you talking about?

It's just a reference to a character from a past game, ffs. When someone "goes quiet" it generally means they stopped doing whatever they were doing and are keeping a low profile.

Also, there's other evidence in game that Niko's not dead. At one point after I finished the story (I think), I switched to Michael and he was in his house.

Jimmy had a laptop open, on Niko Bellic's LifeInvader page (complete with profile pic).

It just means that Niko stopped getting involved in crime. By the end of GTA IV, there was no need for him to continue doing what he did.

Or the game was sh*t so its went quiet, I prefer to think its a little self depreciating humour from Rockstar instead of Niko keeping a low profile. Each to their own

Means he went off grid as has been said. Given the overall plot of IV I'm not surprised and don't see why it would be. Niko didn't like what he was doing, he had done all he came to do and had lost/gained all he stood to lose or gain. Lester would have specified if he had been killed because it wouldn't be him "going quiet" it'd be someone else "silencing" him. Phrasing is everything.

Am I the only one who thought that while yes, it means he went off the grid, it might actually also be a clever stab at the little beef Rockstar and the voice actor of Niko had? Thus, Niko literally "went quiet". That's how I saw it at least..

I have a theory that Niko Belic is lester just a older one so when he says off the grid I think he just does want them to know he's him and he spys on girls because michelle broke his heart they were in love and he doesn't tell them cause he's a bit fatter so he can't run with money or gold or whatever so I think all those Easter eggs about wanted posters or cars he brought over to los Santos to remember his time in liberty city so the reason lester knows so,much about him is because he is him off the grid he's saying he can't or doesn't work anymore

It was a sly little inside joke referring to how Niko's voice actor, Michael Hollick, and Rockstar have "parted ways". Niko has "gone quiet" because he literally no longer has his voice.

http://kotaku.com/5138062/rockstar-says-hell-no-to-new-niko-dialog-in-lost-and-damned

Grand Theft Auto IV voice actor Michael Hollick made waves last year when he complained to the New York Post about not being paid enough to voice the star of Rock Star's masterpiece, Niko Bellic. His complaints left a bad taste in the mouths of video game voice actors everywhere, and likely didn't make Rock Star too happy either - perhaps not happy enough to be adamantly against calling the actor in to record new dialog for the game's first DLC, The Lost And Damned.

Long story short, Hollick agreed to a set compensation for his work on GTA IV: $100,000 for roughly 3.5 months of work (spread out over a 15 month period of course), and because GTA IV went on to sell like gangbusters, Hollick felt like he deserved more money AFTER the fact... yet, instead of simply approaching Rockstar about it, he decided to bitch to the newspaper, and well, that pretty much burned any hope of seeing another dime from Rockstar.

So yeah, when Lester says Niko has "gone quiet", that's undoubtedly a tongue-in-cheek reference to losing Niko's voice actor, doubling as an explanation from why we will likely never hear or see Niko again. Killing Niko would have upset a lot of fans (just look at the uproar over Johnny Klebbitz), so just leaving Niko's fate up in the air was the obvious choice.
