Towing Boats/Jet Skis

I saw a truck towing a boat so I stole it, brought the truck down to the beach, backed it into the water, and the boat detached itself from the trailer. Worked fine.

 

Tried to get the boat back on the trailer, and the game just wasn't having it. Does anyone know if it's even possible or how to do it? Seems odd to have trailers and even trailers with actual boats/jet skis on them being towed, but you can't actually get one onto the trailer.
