Deleted saved game after turning off 360... WTF!

So I'm playing as Michael running from the cops a few days ago, and it was getting late so I decided to call it a night and turn off my 360 the next time I died. When I died I turned it off right as the "wasted" screen came on.

 

Anyway, I turn on my 360 the next day and it starts loading a saved game. THE SAVED GAME DISAPPEARED! Now I'm stuck playing a really early save of the game because of this; I can't think of any possible way of this happening other than some obscure error. I was only about 20% into the game's progress... but still. That's at least 4-5 hours down the drain.

 

I'd like to know if anyone else has experienced this with GTA 5 or any other game, and if there's any way to recover it. It baffles me because there's no way to delete a saved game within the game, only through the dashboard. Also, the game is absolutely amazing, but I would have been willing to wait several more months to buy the game in order to give a bit of a grace period for Rockstar to iron out all of these glitches and errors (namely the whole not installing the 2nd disc thing).

You probably turned off while the "saving/loading" icon was spinning in the bottom right corner. That will corrupt your save.

 

Backup, backup, backup your saves.
