Will a USB install delete current game?

Xbox 360 user I installed disk one to my hard drive and have been using the play DVD to play as the instructions suggested, and am about halfway through campaign.

 

I have read that I can see some improvement in performance if I install the play disk to a fast USB drive. I happen to have a fast 16GB USB sitting around.

 

My question is now that I have been playing for a while and have a bunch of saved games how can I go about installing the play disk to the USB and run it from there and not lose my progress? Thanks!
