  1. 1. How do you feel about GTA V's driving mechanics

    • Its great. A huge improvement of GTA IV
    • I like it despite it feeling more "arcady"
    • Indifferent
    • I dont like it but I can live with it
    • Its terrible. Big step back from GTA IV

In my opinion, GTA IV had TOO much body roll and the suspension was waaaay too loose. Also, the tires didn't seem to grip the road much because even at low speeds, you'd slide around everywhere like as if you're driving on ice.

However, GTA V doesn't have enough body roll, the suspension is too tight and you grip the road like you have adhesive on the tires.

I think the best driving experience would be in the middle of GTA IV and GTA V.

That being said... I prefer GTA V's driving. It's a lot more fun now and it keeps you on the edge of your seat. In GTA IV, you couldn't go anywhere without hitting another car because the city was so dense.

In GTA IV, it worked because of the scale of the city and in GTA V, the scale is much bigger and requires bigger changes to the way the cars drive.

The driving in V puts you on the edge of your seat? How so? There's pretty much absolutely no danger of anything bad happening when driving. Worst case scenario you might fly off the freeway, but it's easy to just make your way to it what with how indestructible cars are.

In PS2 GTA games, you could practically take a 90 degree turn at 100 MPH without touching the brakes. GTA IV added more complex driving physics where the cars actually felt like they had weight and had a suspension, and you could not longer just mash the gas peddle everywhere you went with no consequences, and tons of people complained.

So in GTA IV we had:

1. Vehicles actually had weight and momentum

2. Vehicles actually had a suspension

3. There was slightly too much body roll and slightly too much understeer - if they tightened up the suspension slightly for sports cars, it would have been near perfect

You could power slide, drift, fish tail, over correct, spin out, and do all of these things that previous games did not have the physics to accomplish. I really disliked a lot of things about GTA IV, but I spent more time playing it than any previous title because the driving was so addictive. Yes you had to actually use the BRAKES while weaving through traffic and cornering, but once you go good at it, it was amazingly fun.

But...people complained and it got dumbed down for GTA V:

1. Vehicles feel like they weigh 300 pounds and can come to a complete stop from 120 MPH in 10 feet

2. Vehicles basically have no suspension and no body roll

3. There is no game on the planet with as much oversteer as GTA V

4. The cars no longer feel like automobiles, but RCA cars that dart in whatever direction you point the joy stick, completely removing all of the challenging driving mechanics of GTA IV

5. Taking turns and weaving through traffic is no longer a balance of giving it the right amount of throttle, the right amount of brakes, there is no fishtailing, no momentum, no body roll....just a dumbed down point the joy stick in that direction and the car goes there

Don't forget, the cars pretty much drive themselves.

In the rare case that you actually slide around a corner, the game autocorrects and straightens you out.

Oh, and when you use the E-Brake you don't slide to a stop, the game takes over and you come to a nice ABS assisted stop.

This is completely true, last night I was bored so I figured I would cause some havok as Trevor. I got the cops after me and we were off on a chase. I was driving the El Camino looking car, at first I was trying to drive and get away, swerving through traffic and all. Then I decided I was just going to go crazy and not really care.

After 10 minutes of ramming almost everything in sight the cops were still on me. My car had some damage, one front wheel was missing and the other was pushed in, but my car still drove fine. Its pretty ridiculous how easy the car chases are with the damage model being how it is AND the driving physics like they are as well. At no time during the chase did I feel any danger or suspense. Finally I got bored, I was in the middle of Blane county somewhere and decided I was just going to pin the accelerator and see what happened. To my surprise I drove across the desert, in my supposedly severely damaged car, through a town bouncing off some buildings and finally straight up a mountain. When I got to the top the police had lost sight of me and apparently decided to give up.

I am thinking of letting my 8 year old try her hand at a police chase to see if she can get away. If she can I think I might be done with this game. I have been playing it for about 30 hours so far and have not felt a challenge yet.

I liked it a lot better in Gta IV and was disappointed to see it change so much, It did have its flaws, but it felt much more realistic and enjoyable to me.

I found the driving was a challenge at first as well, and I actually had to practice to get good, which I also enjoyed and it felt very rewarding when I eventually got really good at it due to the effort I had put in.

The handling in Gta 5 just feels far too light or floaty and overly responsive to me, I still enjoy some of the driving in Gta 5, but I found it much more enjoyable and rewarding in Gta 4 and I think it's a shame that they've changed and edited it so much in Gta 5.

Funny experiment:

I turned on F1 2012 on my PS3. Pick a Red Bull, set the brake pressure to high and downforce levels to the max. Let it go to full speed in a long straight. Try to stop the car having a look at the marker boards before a corner. Car stops in 140 meters from 315 km/h.

Then turn on GTA 5. Grab a Lotus Elise lookalike (whatever the name is), tune it to the best braking settings, let it go to full speed down a highway, make it stop. Calculated braking distance through GPS feature. It took 90 meters.

And some people say "it´s not arcadey".

With top-notch gars in GTA 5, you can actually swerve like a real car would be able to, and the braking is also massively improved. It's much easier to give the brakes a quick tap, swerve left and swerve right before getting hit by oncoming traffic. When you tried that in GTA 4, your brakes would slow you down too much, and when you swerved, the chassis of the car tilted making it harder to swerve back in a quick second.

God forbid you scratch your front bumper.

Just did some offroading with the super cars. It was terrible boring, just flew over Everything. Wy do they evan have 4*4 trucks in the game? they have no value at all. Just take a comet and you have a FOFF combined with a monstertruck/tank and you can hold full gas and drive upp any mountain?!?!?! What is the fun in that? i can see that younger people may Think it is funny. But they dont get to play the game anyway do to 18 years limit. What did rockstar Think i cant understand this. :(

I really expected more from GTA V vehicles' handling... it looks like we are back to GTA III times :(

GTA IV's handling was pretty good, they could have just improved it a bit, but they decided to use Midnight Club physics, it just ruined the fun of driving, now your car just moves like a RC vehicle, the feeling of "fight" against your own car to keep it on the road is gone, also the vehicle damage is a crap, I remember how funny was to break your whole car in GTA IV and keep running with one wheel locked, I miss those days :/

Also this square radar, dude, seriously, there was anything wrong with the default radar, now sometimes all missions icons are in one corner of the radar, making it impossible to identify them.

I would rate GTA V 7/10 due to those things I said, driving is a key part of the Grand Theft Auto series

I think the main improvement I'm liking with the driving are the small things. the feel that a topheavy vehicle is actually topheavy, the handling of a sports bike vs a dirtbike etc.

This thread has been a great read it is hilarious.

Man I love laughing at people who don't know the difference between an opinion and a fact.

Someone disagrees with me? "They must be a noob and don't understand how great I am making their opinion invalid even though I know nothing of their skill level."

Want to get a point across, make up some hyperbolic nonsense that just isn't true.

Put all the drift components on a car and you will be drifting and fishtailing with more success. Just thought I'd mention it.

It's massively improved. When you make sharp turns, the car actually sticks to the road in a realistic fashion. Every time you would drift in GTA 4, the chassis of the car would lean drastically to one side, no matter how much you perfected the drift/turn. When I'm driving a sports car, my turns shouldn't feel like I'm driving an SUV.

Cars shouldn't stick to the road tho... That's the problem. Its not realistic at all..

Also, what game are you talking about? In GTA 4 sports cars don't turn like SUVS. Sounds like you just can't drive worth a damn in GTA 4.

In GTA 4, when you hit that warp speed in cars any mistake or sharp turn you make needed to be negotiated with slower speed. In GTA 5 you can hit that warp speed and still make sharp turns easily. Which in turn rewards people not paying attention to their speed. Which is just bad driving.

I don't know what car you have in real life but cars should be sticking to the road

This. GTA 4 gave the illusion of being more realistic because people confuse realism with difficulty. Forza has both realism and difficulty. GTA 4 had super cars looking like they were going to flip over on every simple drift/turn.

In GTA 5, the tires stick to the road more as they should. I played GTA 4 up until the day GTA 5 came out, and I just don't understand what people are complaining about. Too many super cars in GTA 4 drove like faster sedans.

It's easier, which is giving people another illusion that it's now less realistic.

Cars don't stick to anything. Sure at normal speeds they seem to stick. But take any car past its limits and then try to stop on dime or make a quick turn. You won't be sticking to anything.

No, GTA 4 cars did not look like they where going to flip over on every single turn unless you where going too damn fast or not driving correctly... Some of the statements by people here I find pretty funny. Its like we didn't play the same game.

Again, nothing sticks to the road once you starting going too fast an factoring out how momentum works.

Exactly and in GTAV those physics apply. I'm playing it right now. When going at top speed when I brake the car slides before stopping. When going at fast speeds when I make sharp turns and even in large turns, depending on the speed, the car spins out. So what is your contention?

The only difference now is that the vehicles don't seem to be driving on ice, swerving this way and that no matter the speed, like in GTA4. The cars are sticking to the ground like they should and adhering to laws of momentum and physics when they actually apply.

Note to Rockstar: I would pay good money for some DLC just for decent driving physics.

Good money.

me 2 !!!!

idea for next GTA:

  • The GTA collector editions with more realistic driving (like gta4)
  • And normal editions with arcade driving

Or at least an option in settings to switch like you have with auto-lock shooting (btw what's the fun in auto-lock shooting ????)

Gnocchi Flip Flops

Now that I've played the game for almost 2 hours I don't see why people are bitching. The physics aren't bad at all and the game as a whole feels very well made. Driving at a slow pace is easy and enjoyable. I drove Franklin's sexy ass Buffalo from his house to Paleto's Up-n-Atom. I enjoyed the physics all of the way up there. The only thing that bugged me was how the cars don't have wonderful acceleration so customization on most cars will fix that.

I tested out the physics when a police chase began. The scenario was that I stood in front of a white man off the Senora Fwy and he got mad. I ran him over in from of some cops and a chase began lol! So I drove all crazy and ended up driving off a mountain leading to an explosion near Sandy Shores. The physics are enjoyable at most parts of the game. I really don't like the way some cars turn so sharply though but it is livable.

Just the fact that there is so much fuzz about the driving makes it clear that’s something wrong with it...

I know people with the collector edition who really feel ripped off , and these are real GTA fans…

There was also a lot of discontent about the GTAIV mechanics so by your own logic there was something wrong with that title as well.

And oh look I can be arrogant too "And I knew many people who played GTAIV and where upset about the new driving mechanics, and they are the Real GTA FANS".

You have may to much traction on grass and offorad. Driving a 2wd car with regular tyres upp a 60`degree angel is not fun. I want to feel difrence between a super car and a offroad car. and on the traction on different Surfaces. Is that to much to ask from a game?

Let's add two more measured complaints.

1- airborne balance is instant and sensitive such that if you go into the air while cornering, you're car will quickly start flipping OPPOSITE to it's angle of momentum. Then, if you turn your wheel to land clean (turn into the landing to bring the car under you) you'll flip.

1.5 - I feel like a child when I wobble a turtled car back to its wheels.

2 - the camera switches dramatically when you shoot so that you must guess about where you're shooting till the bullets are already spraying then you can aim.

Basically, they've destroyed all skill aspects of the game and replaced them with 'levels.'

Rockstar may be over their peak. Time for fresh blood maybe.

The more I play V the more I appreciate all the improvements from IV. There defientily is not a lack of physics. When trying to escape police at top speeds, like in real life, my vehicle begins to loose grip and spins out on turns. Certian cars handle differently. I was using a sports car and it was oddly close to the mechanics of IV, but more balanced. All in all imo it just keeps getting better the more I play.
