Kinh Rincer
LOL, Xbox Support on twitter seems to be providing more support help than Rockstar. Then again, all you need to do is mention Red Ring of Death... https://twitter.com/Meat_Butcher/status/380885030995640320 This is interesting. Maybe Microsoft are starting to pay attention. Cr!minal
So it looks like this problem is specific to non-HDMI Xbox 360 versions? Maybe it's something to do with DVD drive models used in there..?

oli206
Add another one here. I'm from Spain, my xbox was refurbished after getting RROD on 2007, no HDMI, 20 gb. The longest i've been able to play is about 1'5 hours. I have played both with components and VGA cable, same result. I have contacted Rockstar support and all I got is this: oli2062 days ago I have one of the big Xbox models, no HDMI (around 2008) with a 20 gb hard drive. GTA V has frozen my console 6-7 times after playing for around 10 min. A couple of times the console froze exactly after playing 12 min with it. It has happened in different places, at the beginning in the bank, in the GTA V loading logo after the bank, in the intro when the psychologist is talking, while driving the car after that sequence... I have tried playing Assassins creed Revelations for about 15 min and no problems, only GTA V seemed to have caused this. I posted a message in a spanish forum and at least a couple of persons are having also freezes and it seems it's only happening on the old models, not the slim one. By the way, i have only installed the "install" disc, so it's not the same problem as the one people is having when installing the play disc. Solange M.1 day ago Hello oli206, Thank you for contacting R* Games Support. We're sorry to hear that you're having issues with one of our titles. Below you will find some Console Troubleshooting steps which may help resolve the issue. These are the official troubleshooting steps provided by Microsoft on their support site: Before troubleshooting, please check the following: 1. Turn the console off and on. 2. Unplug all power cords and accessories, and then plug them back in firmly. Make sure all connections are secure. 3. Update your console software (this article from Microsoft details how to check if your console software is up to date http://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-360/system-updates/system-updates-info) Clearing the System Cache: 1. Press the Guide button on your controller, go to Settings, and select System Settings. 2. Select Storage or Memory. 3. Highlight any storage device, and then press Y on your controller. 4. Select Clear System Cache. 5. When prompted to confirm storage device maintenance, select Yes. Clearing the Game Data: (Prior to clearing the game data, ensure that you back up any Save Data so it doesn't become deleted) 1. Press the Guide button on your controller, go to Settings, and select System Settings. 2. Select Storage or Memory. 3. Highlight any storage device, and then press A on your controller. 4. Select Games and Apps. 5. Scroll through the list until you find the game you want to clear the data, once you find it press A on your controller. 6. Delete any game related files which are not "save" files, if these files are deleted they cannot be recovered. 7. Once all of the files have been deleted, go back to the Xbox Dashboard Home. 8. Reboot the game. If this is still happening let's try this on a second 360 to see if the same issue is occurring. Langen
Registered to report that me too has problems with a refurbished console, no HDMI, 20gb hdd, RROD'd around 2007-2008. I did some troubleshooting with XBOX support last night. Before I went to bed and went to work they gave me the following methods of testing:1. Go storage, press Left bumper, Right bumper, X, Left bumper, Right bumper, X and reinstall update. (Might have been Right, Left, cant remember right now) 2. Remove game (I formatted), go to storage and clear system cache 3 times, reinstall, play. This is where I could play for the longest (around 50 minutes). The last advice I got I haven't been able to test, but they told me to sign in with another Gamertag and run the game. Very strange advice, but I will try this when I get back from work. w3llborn
I just want to give an update. I was having the freezing problem every 5-10 min with my old white xbox 360 for the first 2 days of having gta5. last night I ended up just buying a brand new xbox 360 slim and have not had any problems playing the game 4 hours in a row what so ever, so I definitely think that the problem is due to the older xbox model. Remco079
Well lets put al the info together:All Xbox without a hdmi and with 20gb hdd freezes the game. What kind of disk drives do you all have? Also interesting is that those xboxes were al repaired(replaced) by microsoft after a troubleshoot with it. The solutions like installing the play disc installing the instal disc on USB play on 720p play on 420p clearing cache will not help. Maybe someone techinical can change his diskdrive? I will look at the price here in my country maybe that is the solutiuon. I refuse buying a brand new xbox.XBOX SUPPORT said that they know about the problem and that i'm not the only one. I noticed them like some others on this forum so maybe this gonna roll right now Edited September 20, 2013 by Remco079

robin701
Add me to the list.... Older 360, rrod refurb in early 2008 Everything installed fine, no hang ups, but the first feeze was right before you walk in and deal with the hostages. I literally took 2 steps, and froze. I haven't even been able to get far enough to save my game, so I have to start completely over every single friggin time. I stopped counting at 10 freezes and gave up about an hour after that. I haven't been this pissed off in a long time. I swapped out GTA for Skyrim, played for at least an hour with no problems, back to GTA and frozen within minutes. I had an E71 error code when I first fired up the 360 last night, so I thought my xbox was ready to crap out, but after popping the had drive off, turning on, put the HD back on, everything (everything BUT GTA) works fine. Not sure if my xbox was already on it's last legs or not. On a side note, I dont know much about newer 360s. Can you transfer game data from 1 HD to another? Can you use an old 20 gig HD with a new 360? I don't wanna lose my game data from all my other games if I do end up buying a new 360.

ReaperCru
So got a response from tech support not much different from the responses by everyone else. Followed them to a T. Before this I was able to walk around as Franklin for at least 5-10 minutes before it would crash now I don't even get past the intro mission. Beyond frustrated right now. Hello Mfallonjr, Thank you for contacting Rockstar Support. We're sorry to hear that you're having issues with GTA V on Xbox 360. Below you will find some Console Troubleshooting steps which may help resolve the issue. Before troubleshooting, please check the following: a. Turn the console off and on. b. Unplug all power cords and accessories, and then plug them back in firmly. Make sure all connections are secure. c. Update your console software. 1.) Clearing Game Cache:To clear the Xbox 360 cache select Settings==>System==> Storage ==> then highlight the HDD, press Y for Device Options… and then simply select “Clear System Cache”. Select Yes when prompted to perform Hard Drive Maintenance.* = Deleting the cache will remove temporary game files and updates. Saved games, profiles, DLC etc will NOT be removed. **Please note, if the game freezes during installation, please check the following article:http://support.rockstargames.com/hc/en-us/articles/200195537-Freezing-during-GTA-V-installation- 2.) Clear the Game Cache.Clearing the Game Cache on the Xbox 360 is a separate function from clearing the System Cache. In order to do so, you must hold the LEFT Bumper, RIGHT Bumper, and the X button all at the same time on the Xbox 360 controller as a game is launching. Once you reach the Main Menu or Title Screen of the game, you can let go of the buttons. There will be no notification to you that this process has completed because it is all done passively.Clearing the Game Cache resolves many problems in games that rely heavily on the Xbox 360's cached memory. Some of these problems include, but are not limited to NPC issues, random textures, and "hitching", "lagging", or "slow gameplay". 3.) Disconnect your Xbox from the internet. We have gotten reports that some players have been able to resolve their issues by disconnecting their console from the internet. It is possible that some freezes are related to some recent server outages that should be resolved shortly. If issues persist, disabling all internet connections on your console should prevent the game from attempting to access the servers. Obviously this is not ideal, but testing this should work at least for troubleshooting purposes, and should be resolved quickly. 4.) Clear save files. Some crashes can be related to corrupted save data, especially crashes at a specific spot, or crashes on launch. The next step would be to isolate the save files, and see if launching without them remedies the issue. There are several ways of doing this: a. Deleting all files in the Games and Apps folder related to GTA V. Select Settings==>System==> Storage ==> then highlight the HDD, press A, then select Games and Apps==>Grand Theft Auto V. Delete all files in this directory. Note: This method will result in permanent loss of data. If the game crashed the first time it launched, no valuable information is stored in here, so they may be deleted freely. If you already played the game for many hours, you may want to consider trying another method. b. Backing up all files in the save directory to an external device before deleting all files as described above. c. Possibly the simplest method, and one that also might isolate other potential issues would be to test the game from a brand new Xbox Live Gamertag. The save files for 360 games are tied to a specific user. Launching from a new user should cause the game to pull from a brand new pool of files. 5.) Test the game on a second console. This last step is potentially the trickiest step, depending on alternate hardware availability, but probably the most important step for determining the cause of major issues on any console. That step would be to test the disc on a separate console. If you have a friend or family member with an Xbox 360, we strongly recommend installing the game on their console, and see if issues persist. 6.) Test the game when installed on a second hard drive.Because GTA V is so reliant on install data, and utilizes the hard drive so heavily, it may also be worth attempting to install on a different drive, and see if that helps. If you were previously installing on internal storage, installing to a freshly formatted 16GB Flash drive may help improve performance. More information on installation can be found at the following: http://support.rockstargames.com/hc/en-us/articles/200155686-Grand-Theft-Auto-V-Xbox-360-and-PS3-Installation-Requirements If you continue to have issues, please let us know the following: The model of your Xbox 360 The size of your hard drive, How large is it, and is the game installed to an internal HDD or Flash Drive? How much free space is available on your HDD after installation. The contents of any error code, if applicable. If possible, please submit a screen shot of any error messages, or give the precise wording of the error. Once we receive this information, we will continue to investigate. Hypertion
This will probably not be my final update but i think this issue deserves the attention. After switching to the newer xbox i encountered no problems until the end of the day yesterday when the screen suddenly when black. up to that point there was no issues at all and nothing to indicate it would happen. the black screen occurred while switching to trevor from franklin(i think) while he was inside his safehouse. i left it off for the night after this. will update later tonight after i have finished shopping and tried playing again. KnackerWhacker
I am in the exact same boat as everyone else here, Before realising this was a massive problem I went as far as opening up my xbox, drilling like 100 holes into the side of my case and wiring up an extra fan to them. I also cleaned it out fully and replaced the thermal compound with artic silver 5. I even ran the xbox outside through the window in the freezing night air to test it! I was that desperate to play it! Damn it. I have a feeling we are screwed. I also have an old fat, 2007 model, pre-hdmi era with an added 120gb hard drive. I have also tried every imaginable possible combination of installation, formatting, usb, cache clearing bullsh*t that everyone else has. It is very very disappointing. Buying a new xbox is not an option. f*ck it anyway.
Caligastia
delete cache and try again. I already attempted that This sounds crazy but try deleting the cache, turning the xbox off, leaving it off and unplugging the console, leave it off for 40 minutes, then try again. I had the same problem, did this, by accident really, and it worked, I have logged 12 hours in the game since with no issues. I hope this helps.
