iggy1313
finally i can enjoy the game! no freeze! everything runs smooth! rockstar forced me to come up with this solution! http://s7.directupload.net/file/d/3399/5mfs4k9j_jpg.htm so in my case, it was an overheating problem. Its not an overheating issue, At least not completely. When a 360 overheats, Your entire box shuts down, And there is a error message telling you it shut down due to overheating. It does not just freeze. BadUsername

MACtastic 001
Guys, the hardware is OVERHEATING!!!! After weeks of frustration, this freeze problem is 100% SOLVED and I have been playing for hours!!! PLEASE verify with a response that this WORKS FOR YOU!!!!! Problem: Antiquated hardware of the pre-2010 XBOX is trying to process the heavy/quick update speed of a GTA 5 high speed car chase and CAN"T HANDLE IT (franklin/michael missions)-- speed through the universe and the board gets too hot AND FREEZES to save itself a meltdown. After a freeze, place your hand near the rear vent and you will feel the intensity of the HEAT. SOLUTION: PLACE a fan approximately 6" away from the plug-side/rear of the xbox and POINT INTO the rear vent. Set the fan to MED or HIGH and you will be up and running. I have the original white xbox 360 premium (20 Gb hard drive) that was refurbished for RROD in 2007. The install disc 1 is installed on the hd and the game disc is installed on a usb flash drive. HOPE THIS HELPS!

It made me crash faster. So then I held all fans to see what would happen. Two red lights came on and xbox shut itself off. That's what an xbox does when it over heats, not freeze in mid gameplay. HOPE THIS HELPS! Why I believe there may be some sort of connection with what you are saying, You are flawed on a couple of things. One, Placing a fan to blow IN to the outtake vent makes no sense. Thats trapping the heat in your box and blowing warm air around. This is not just guesswork, But, I have been building, OVerclocking, and Tweaking PC for years. If you are not using correct ventilation methods, your doing yourself no favors due to overheating. (I mean if it works for you, thats great, though) As in the PC world, more vans does not always mean better ventilation. Two, When an X-box shuts down simply because of overheating IT DOES NOT FREEZE. It shuts your box of completely, Giving you 2 red lights, And you have to unplug it and plug it back in to turn it back on. After you turn it back on, The 360 gives you a error message on loading telling you that your box overheating and giving you some tips and links to help with the problem. Thats why there has to be another relative issue, Because, it is not just simply overheating.

Jds377
I'm freezing every 10 minutes or so, 2008 refurb with 20GB hdd. I've exchanged at GS and picked up a good flash drive to try out. So far I've only tried install disc on USB using Disc 2 as play - froze after one short side mission. I'm now installing play disc to HDD to see how that goes, then I'll try Disc 2 on USB 1 on HDD. I've moved my save to cloud and I have the latest title update. For those saying it can't be an overheat - I agree as I had a freeze 5 minutes into gameplay last night right after a cold start. However, the minimal research I've done suggests that only the CPU temp is monitored for overheat protection - not the GPU. I don't think we can rule out a hot GPU just yet. If I can't find a successful configuration I'm going to try to return for a refund at GS, if they give me hassle I'm going to go through New York BBB, I'd suggest all who have been swept under the rug do the same. Call Meee Kingz
Hello Everyone, Yesterday I purchased GTA V for the Xbox 360 2006 edition which had no HDMI port, I did not know there was an issue with the game at the time until I experienced constant freezing when Franklin and Lamar were racing the sports cars on mission one. Also, in the introduction scene I noticed a small problem with small details not showing during the montage of the city. Sometimes after that I could just barely reach a checkpoint without freezing where I could then continue my progress there. I have tried everything on trying to fix the issues of older Xbox 360's performance with GTA V. Nothing has worked. Today I did speak with an Xbox agent who knew what was going on with the situation as he told me quote' "We have been getting many calls about GTA V not performing as excepted on older and some newer consoles", he told me to do the steps in clearing system cache and so forth from there. Right now, this major issue I believe can be fixed if Rockstar and Microsoft closely work together (which they are right now) and find a solution to this within a close amount of time. For now if the problem is not fixed, I believe Rockstar could figure out a way for players to somewhat get back what they gave in order to play this humor of constant glitches and disorder Thank you, Call Meee Kingz

bwatters
So I have a first gen. Xbox 360 with no HDMI ports that is having the freezing problem. I thought I would add the steps that I have taken to resolve this issue (so far unsuccessful). But first a little background. I got this off Ebay in August of 2007. It RROD on my in Sept. or Oct. Had it sent to Microsoft for the fix, it ran good for about 2- 3 years then my controllers stopped synching with it; LTDR version is had to send Xbox to MS for a 2nd time to fix this problem. The xbox has been running fine since then. The day GTAV came out, I had to clear off a good portion of space on the 20GB HDD to install Disc 1. It installed with with probably around 200MB of space left. I started up in Disc 2 and noticed right away the loading of the city was lagging badly. I could not get through the first mission successfully without it freezing up on me. Troubleshooting: - Cleared the HDD cache. - Made sure HDD was properly connected to Xbox360. - Plugged power cable direct to wall; no surge, etc. - Checked Disc 2 for scratches, finger prints, etc At this point, I think the Xbox is over heating. I look online on how to remove the case went down to local electronic store and bought some of that dust spray remover and blew out a ton of dust, hair, etc. I also went online and saw others having the same problem, other people tried brand new HDDs with a brand new install of the game and still report the issue. After blowing out the inside of dust, it has improved the length of time I am allowed to play. It was originally anywhere from 5 - 10 minutes up to now about 1 - 2 hours of play before it freezes. I also went out to Walmart and bought a $15 box fan and have it direct on the Xbox and the power brick; this also improves the performance. Now when I try to play GTA online the Xbox is back to freezing and locking up around the 5 minute mark again but playing single player it lasts about 2 hours. Any other suggestions? I think this is a problem with software and not so much hardware. EDIT: now after the latest update my xbox is back to freezing at around 10 minutes regardless of playing locally or online. Pretty much unplayable at this point. Message to R*, please find a fix for this otherwise this worthless game will become target practice along with the Xbox. Jds377
Seems it was an overheating GPU for me. I just got 2.5 hours before I shut it down to head out, case is apart with a fan ghetto mod blowing directly on the GPU. I'd estimate the heatsink is around 120-125f after playing. I'm going to continue playing this way and I'll post again if I have any more freezing.
Vankwish
We have had major issues with freezing, not starting and rebooting mid game since getting the game 5 days ago. It would also get so far in game and give us auto save errors saying re-install cause there's an issue with ur save device and errors saying disk is unreadable. We have had our XBOX since the end of the year of 2008, it's far from new... The only thing that has even came close to being able to get the game working was to do as follows.......We cleared our hard drive of all games we do not play, (we can always reinstall later)....We have a 320 external hard drive, then the regular 4 gig on board, it was halfway used up already but still with all the extra room left, we took out all the games except for only a few...(We also uninstalled any GTA 5 info first that saved previous, and made a clean start.) Then we installed the install disk first, then when it prompts for disk 2, DO NOT put it in, restart the XBOX. Turn it back on, then insert disk 2, (it won't prompt for it)....Start playing Franklins mission as normal and let it save on it's own after the mission...it asks you then what device to save it to and we chose CLOUD. We have continued to choose cloud any time it asks, and the rest of the time it auto saves and doesn't ask for device. We have successfully played now for 2 days straight with it only rebooting once while in game so far, and that was yesterday morning. Since then hasn't froze up period. Before we did this it rebooted or froze up every 3-5 mins non stop. It still gives us a small issue when we go to start the game initially, we have to try to start it about 4 times, taking about 3-4 mins to get it started. Prior to this it was taking us nearly 2 hours just to get the game to start, then the reboot, freezing, error issues would follow. Hope this can help someone, worked for us, nothing else did. Seems the more room that game has to stretch it's legs, even tho we had tons of room left on the external, it plays much better.
iggy1313
Ok, So I have had the freeze issues on first mission since day one. Now, I still have my xbox set up with fan blowing on it, Just have never put it back together. Was at random watching a movie on it, streaming from PC. Movie went off, And I just at random decided to try GTAV since the disc was in box. It ran for probably 4 to 5 hours straight, no freeze. WTF? I mean, I am totally glad its playing, But, nothing has changed, Unless the patch addressed that issue. My xbox is no cooler than before, So, that rules out overheating being the root cause. Have not tried it yet today, But, WIll this evening.
blastbeat bill
I have played the game since day 1. And completed all missions. I am at 84% of completion. This week the problems started, I had a couple of random reboots. Like 2 or 3 in a couple of days. I was like wtf?! But i didn't think to much of it. I was always able to continue playing after the reboot. But yesterday after playing for about an hour the game kept rebooting, i was trying to play golf but i couldn't finish it. It kept rebooting. Now the game just keeps on rebooting, I can't even get in the game.
totoh
I had this freezing and crashing problem in the two first missions here is how i fix it : follow the instruction that Xbox support given you : it fixed the problem but it stile gets lots of low frame rate and textures problems because we install disc 2 (which Rockstar already told us not to do) but its okay play like that a couple of missions for my case i played until 6.2% then delete only second disc from storage then grand theft auto 5 then delete disc 2 and play it form disc 2 it worked for me and if any thing happens install disc two play a couple of missions then delete disc 2 only and play from it. i wish this help any one Edited October 9, 2013 by totoh SlimKidFat
