Remco079
Well it is working okee for me, I played yesterday like 6 hours. Sometimes i pause the game, just for taking a break, eat and drink something and play further. Then i pause after a hour maybe less again and then it will work on mine, maybe you can try this at home
Gaz 1976
Riiiight. So having followed this forum since day 1, I finally got the time and the tools needed to whip the case off my Xbox (note: I think that anyone that does this should bear in mind that this risks damage to the Xbox, and involves electrical components being exposed, so only do this if you know what you're doing and are aware of the risks to the unit and to yourself). It hasn't been open in the 6 years I've had it, so no surprise to find the heat sink caked in dust. I gave the whole unit a complete clean, and set it up next to a large desktop fan blowing across it, with the DVD drive lifted up and away from the heatsink as per other posters' photos. I really believed this was going to sort it. First time out though it froze after 20 minutes. Gutted. Switched it off and had another go half an hour later and it's just managed a full hour's gameplay, whereas before the 'record' had been about 20 minutes. This may all just be complete coincidence, I realise, and it could be that the problems with the older Xbox 360s isn't heat related at all. Anyway, I'll report back once I've had chance to test it a bit further. Either way, having my xbox exposed and its guts across the desk is not a long-term solution, and since it's happily played the likes of GTA IV, Oblivion, Skyrim and Black Ops II without difficulty, I'm still looking to R* and MS to sort this out somehow. It's not like I'm going to buy a new Xbox on the eve of the ONE coming out... UPDATE: Hmmmm. Having left the system off for half an hour, the next play lasted for just 10 minutes.... Looking increasingly like this wasn't the solution I was looking for... Edited October 2, 2013 by Gaz 1976
jmalone7us
Well I gave up yesterday. Returned my copy of GTA V to Wal-mart. After a battle with customer service telling me about copy right laws I had enough. I went off on them and they finally refunded my money. Told them they sold me a game that was unplayable and it is their responibility to get their money back from Rockstar.
5titch
The problem is the motherboard. My brother replaced his 2008 console with a pre-owned Elite w/ a Jasper board and he has 0 issues. If you don't have a Jasper or a Falcon you can't play.

Gamestop isnt very generous when it comes to this stuff. Edit: and if you bought that xbox just for gta5 your gonna have a hell of a time getting your money back on that. Well only thing i "care" about atm is, is this something that will/can be solved patch wise from rockstar/MS there side? Or is it a lost cause (what i personally dont want to believe if so many players have this problem), or just to early to tell how this will work out? Crizx
Or is it a lost cause (what i personally dont want to believe if so many players have this problem), or just to early to tell how this will work out? I think, to answer this question, u need to look back at GTA IV, RDR and L.A. Noire. All those games had the same issue (random freezes) for some consoles, don't know if there was a fix. I dont think its overheat problem, although i did ordered one of this things just to check. I think its cache overflow problem, dont know if its patchable.. Imp07
So I was having continual freeze issues with my 2009 refurb 360, which was extremely frustrating. Luckily some guys at work bought a 4 gig 360 Slim so they are letting me borrow it so I can actually play this game, I just had to install the first disc to my flash drive. Its extremely frustrating that Rockstar/Microsoft would allow something like this to happen, did no-one over there test the game on the older 360's? If i didnt have this console to borrow I would be stuck with a game I cant really play. What a scam to not iron this issue out before release. If they never fix it? Thats just awful. oli206
Hey guys, I'm thinking that if this problem is happening in both 360s and Playstation 3s, it's a bit strange that the problem might be overheating or something related to the console itself. Yesterday I noticed while taking a picture, that at some point the game said i was not connected to rockstar social club. I tried to find where I can manually connect to it but I couldn't find how to do it. Could it be that the problem is related to the internet connection and that at some point, the game will try to connect to rockstar social club and freeze? All the people having freezes, could you check if you are connected to it? Maybe all the people having no problems playing the game are properly connected and all of us having freezes are not. If that's the case, i wouldn't understand why is the same people all the time having problems, because if it was a problem with servers overloaded or something like that, it should not always be the same consoles having problems connecting, but considering that both old / new consoles, slim / fat, 360 / ps3 are having problems, I can only think that the source of it must be console - independant. I'm going to try to disconnect from internet my console next time I play, and check if that makes any difference...
Tzhar
Don't know if any has tried online yet, but for me it started pretty smooth (besides connection issues). But over the past day now the freezing has gotten worse, from every 2 hours to every hour to now every 15-20 minutes.

DJ_McLovin
Has anyone with an Xbox Elite console had problems playing the game - namely freezing? Yep and my Xbox is certainly not old. I'm practically stuck at the strip club as Trevor and cant get outside without it freezing up. Of course thats if the game doesnt decide to go full retard and freeze while loading. Im holding my breath for a patch but I know that may never come or if it does, it might be around Christmas.
idealist
Got another new copy of the game (3rd new copy in 2 weeks), new xbox 360 w/ 250 gigs, installed game disc 2 onto a USB stick. So far it is running fine. Actually nice to be able to play the game, but I worry about problems developing again.

Eggtooth
I have received today old 2008 Xbox 360 (Falcon). Gonna try GTA V on it, hopefully it won't freeze. The good news is that I've received it for free.
seppeq
finally i can enjoy the game! no freeze! everything runs smooth! rockstar forced me to come up with this solution! http://s7.directupload.net/file/d/3399/5mfs4k9j_jpg.htm so in my case, it was an overheating problem. Tzhar
The fan fix lasted for a few days, but now I am back to freezing every 10-20 minutes. Mine is about 2 ft in diameter metal fan blasting on high setting less than 8 inches away. Maggot Army
I don't think that we'll ever have whatever issue this is resolved for a while now. They're more about fixing the online multiplayer more than fixing the singleplayer (which is all I'd like to play right now.) I don't see it practical to have to take your xbox apart and blow a fan into to get it to work. Since I've bought the game I haven't been able to get past Franklin's first mission at all....until now, which is entirely odd. The only thing that I have done different is I downloaded the update and as soon as that was done I switched off my Xbox and restarted it. I installed disc 2 on a 32 gig usb drive....(PNY I think) and have been playing offline since. I still get a freeze here and there, but it's usually around the two hour mark or more. I can restart the game and not have any issues at all for another few hours or so. I have a non hdmi 360 that was refurbed for RROD. Am i satisfied with this? Hell no, but it seems to work for now. I read that Rockstar may have another update coming out today or sometime this weeked....per their support page. Maybe they aren't giving all of the details on these patches and are trying to fix whatever problem it is with the game...at least this is what I hope anyway. Like I said though, I couldn't get past the first mission until after the patch and now can, it's just odd.

I've called them numerous times throughout the past two weeks and no one says that there are any issues with this in specific. The only answer I can get is "We've had a couple of calls about that issue." A couple, yep.
