bonsaikitten
To previous commentor is your xbox lying horizontal when you have the fan pointed at the hdd vent? Mine is freezing now and im getting the 2 red rings. But only on this game! Pretty frustrating but installing on a flash drive did help me to get to around 45%. Yes, I have my Xbox lying horizontally. I think it is easier for my fan to blow onto the HDD side when it is laying flat. Previously I tried propping it up, but that didn't seem to make a difference (granted, that is when I was still blowing air on the back of the case). UmerF
UPDATE: I was using Kingston's Datatraveler 3G 16GB USB Stick and it crashed on that to so I moved it to my Corsair Voyager 32GB 3.0 Stick and since yesterday no crash at all. This time I'm keeping all the save files on USB as well. I just installed Disc 1 on to it and playing with a play disc, all looks good.

tnkr
Oh my god these responses from Rockstar are only getting worse. This is what I sent them: "- My disc works fine in another console - Other discs don't work either in my console - Xbox has assured me this is NOT a console issue - they tested it for me - as it plays ALL games I have except for GTA V. This is a gamebreaking compatibility bug of some sort. I can assure you this is a game bug, not somethings else. See all of the thousands of complaints here: - <link to this and other threads> -" And this is what they responded with: "Hi tnkr, If the game works fine on another console, the issue may be console-related, especially if game data has been deleted and save files have been temporarily transferred off the memory device to test. We don't have any information on future release patches. We understand your frustration with this issue and appreciate you being patient with us during this process. Best Regards, Dominique C." BYF
Had my second session last night after installing disc 2 to a USB flash drive, in my first session I got 2hrs of play before it crashed( image on screen, no sound) and was able to complete some missions. Last night I had my first evening playing GTA V with no crashes at all, played for 3 hours straight although I didn't do any missions just gooning around. Installing disc 2 to a flash drive has certainly helped with this issue for me but it hasn't removed it, at least I can enjoy the game now. Just to update, I attempted to play last night but the game froze after around 40 minutes of non-mission play......and I thought I'd cracked it, it seems not. nikolajz1
I did the method where you open up the console and blow a fan into it while playing. Works so far. I play for about a half hour then shut it down for 5 minutes while keeping the fan on.
nimbu
Disambled my Xbox and put a fan inside it.. Got the same freeze after 20 minutes or so. And the heatsink was not warm at all...... Not a overheating problem!!!!
Guchy2ndFloor
I am getting majorly pissed off. I looks like they don't give a crap and wont bother to do anything about it. They've made their billions and Xbox have a new console on the release soon. They could not give a crap about the minority. Two f*ing weeks now and i cant enjoy the game for more than ten minutes. Ive played Arkham City for 3 hours earlier, and played wwe13 and red dead redemption over and over. I feel like putting my fist through the screen every time I get a freeze. I give up. oli206
I feel exactly the same, 2 weeks now and not even a "yes, we do have a problem, we are working to fix it" from Rockstar. I don't know if I should wait for some patch to fix this problem or if I have two discs that I will never be able to enjoy.

nikolajz1
Update: Played for 12 straight hours last night. Before I took apart my Xbox it would freeze every 10 minutes. Now it ran like a dream. I ran a test and shut off the fan I had 3 inches above the heatsink and it froze in 10 minutes while playing. This is the set up I was using: http://i.imgur.com/d634qOJ.jpg Living room looks ghetto as hell but I can play. GTA: online works great too! I am delighted it is working for you and others by using this method, but it's just not practical for me, I dont have a fan and I certainly cant afford one, especially just for my Xbox. I live in Ireland, we have a colder and damper climate, so having a cooling fan is not really a thing over here. Living with central heating now as it's nearing the winter season. It's a great fix, but again just not practical for me.

I haven't got the tools to open the unit, which seems to be the best way of attacking the overheating. I'm convinced that my 2008 console is overheating, as the time I get for before each freeze decreases depending on how long it's been since the console had several hours to off in order to cool down. I'm not sure if R* is going to be able to 'patch' this...
seppeq
xbox turns completely off!!! my xbox completely crashes on franklin's first mission after 2mins of driving. the xbox turns off with two red blinking leds (which means it's a overheating issue). i never had this problem with other games. my xbox is from 2008 with a 120GB HDD. so It's not just freezing... does anyone else got this version of the problem? i've tried everything mentioned before
apak.dos
With online barely functional, this freezing issue has lost the little steam it had in media. Rockstar even said before online launched that it had problems and here we are. The amount of articles I've seen this morning alone was nuts. Although it sounds stupid I thought that I might have had just a little taste ( even though I can't play more than 20 minutes without it freezing ). I was planning on holding on to GTA 5 until a patch came out but with some of the responses rockstar gave some of you guys I'm no longer sure. Hypertion
i want to post this additional update. With the release of GTA:O my newish console has finally frozen in the same fashion as the old one did. When it happened i investigated the system and found it to be very hot to the touch with the fan blasting out hot air. seeing as how even newer versions of the consoles are having issues it is indeed a console issue... namely that Rockstar very poorly optimized this game for the console market.... its quite late in this generation... i would think the developers would understand the limitations of the platforms they are developing for.... chibkin
I also fixed my mission 1 Franklin freezing on rrod refurb Xbox by using a big ass fan. note- a small fan might not be enough (less than 6inch) also I put on new thermal paste and put all 8 black screws back on for full heat transfer another note - even though the top of the taller heatsink is cold, it will still freeze if near the bottom of it is hot
