gtajonno
I opened mine with torx screwdrivers. I'm using just a regular fan (you know, one of those things that prevent getting you all sweaty in summer) which is about 30cm away from my opened Xbox. It's really simple actually. yours is 30cm away mine in tge xbox lol... Might be 10cm too idk lol. But I'm getting an even better fan tomorrow, hope that will work out even better. Longest time I was able to play before a freeze was about an hour. However last time it only played for like 15 minutes before freezing again (during a cutscene...). lol i timed myself and it froze after 1 hour and 39minz lol iv played.it 2 hours straight then i turnrd it off for an hour and back on for two hours im doing it in stints lol.. Is your heatsink actually hot when it freezes? Cause mine is only like, kinda warm. Not hot or anything.yeh mine to not overly hot the cpu gets hotter than the gpu but somehow the fan mod works lol

The very base of my heatsink is very hot when it does this, But, not to where it should be shutdown hot.....Also, Going back to the game being at fault, not console. Because XBOX has its own overheat failsafe that just shuts your console down, and when you restart it gives you a message saying it shut down due overheat and gives you tips to fix it........So, its not even the xbox overheating to the point of hitting its own failsafe. It just freezes on the screen with 360 still running. That it odd.its R* overclocking gpu

GTAV does push the Xbox to it's limit but it does not overclock. While we wish to assist you with your issue so that you can enjoy your game, we've found through troubleshooting that the issue is likely specific to this particular console. This is, unfortunately, outside of our range of support as a game publisher. This is how i replied to the message. R* really needs to work on its PR and Support service, cause this is just horrible. If my console has an hardware issue, then why can it play every other game perfectly fine? Even games with the same or better graphics quality? I contacted Xbox support and they have said its most likely a software issue, as it is happening on multiple consoles, not just mine, and its even appearing on PS3 Consoles as well, according to this forum http://gtaforums.com/topic/594765-xbox-360-game-keeps-freezing-on-franklins-1st-mission/page-34 . So its most likely a software issue. Sincerely One of many disgruntled fans Edited September 28, 2013 by MAKA427
idealist
Here's what I wrote in the ticket I submitted: I'm not sure whether you call it a crash or a freeze. I just started the game up. Ludendorff (1st mission). Everything seems to be playing great, then at various points during the mission, the screen goes black, the audio stops. Start doesn't bring up the menu. Only thing I can do is manually turn off the xbox and turn it back on to try again (unsuccessfully, this happens recurrently). On to further details: I had this problem on my old 2007 xbox. I read your troubleshooting tips. I went out and bought a 2nd GTA V disc, and, a brand new XBOX (250 gig version). Yet this problem still persists: New disc, newest possible xbox. I have also tried (on the new XBOX) to install the play disc to a xbox 16 GB 2.0 thumbdrive. This crash happens whether I am using the thumbdrive or not. Yes, this crash continues to happen after I clear the xbox system cache & cloud cache too. I can't tell you how many hours and how many times I've deleted the game, re-installed it per your instructions about not installing the Play disc on the console, cleared caches, all just to play this game beyond the first mission. In other words, I've tried all of your posted fixes, on 2 separate consoles, and I'm still having a problem playing your game. I really cannot financially afford to buy another new XBOX, since the one I just bought is less than 48 hours old-- which I bought just to play your game. Yet I can't. I just ordered a third copy of GTA5, I hope that one works on my brand new XBOX. When are you guys going to release a patch that will let me play your game? This is the response: Hello Thank you for contacting Rockstar support. Let us know the results of testing the new copy of the game when it arrives.Although there is no information to release on this topic, we appreciate the fact that you are interested in our games and recommend staying tuned to @RockstarGames on Twitter and http://www.rockstargames.com/newswire. Tzhar
Minor update. Still waiting on my slim from amazon. However, I believe I've found a fix with the fan. Pointing one directly from about a foot away. Pretty solid fan, it moves air. Didn't even have to open up the xbox. I am playing with both discs installed to a 120 gig hdd. No crahses for 6 hours. I've played 2 hours on, then stopped playing for an hour (left the system and game in the pause menu) and then played another 3 hours. No crashes whatsoever. AquaHero
I have a 2008 Xbox arcade with a 20GB hard drive. I installed 1st disk onto hard drive and just played 2nd disk off of disk. I got the random restart game breaker as well. It would restart whenever I was trying to meet Lester for the first time, or being in a certain area Mostly it would happen from driving fast in high populated freeways or other areas I tried something different and the game seems not to have any issues right now. I installed my 1st disk, the "Install disk" onto a 16GB flash drive and I still play off of the 2nd "play" disk. I save my in game progress off of my hard drive. Give this a shot if your having problems
donconjo
want to know something funny ? I read the comments about a ghetto fan mod. so im like hmm. let me just try and see if a fan facing the xbox works... got 2 red rings lmao. never happened before. on another note im fed up with all this freezing ish ... Don't blow the air in theback of the xbox that is where the air should come out. Blocking that exit with the airflow from the fan does make it overheat. BYF
Had my second session last night after installing disc 2 to a USB flash drive, in my first session I got 2hrs of play before it crashed( image on screen, no sound) and was able to complete some missions. Last night I had my first evening playing GTA V with no crashes at all, played for 3 hours straight although I didn't do any missions just gooning around. Installing disc 2 to a flash drive has certainly helped with this issue for me but it hasn't removed it, at least I can enjoy the game now. Madoperator
Ok guys hope to make an addition to this forum since MS only says to bring console in for repairs. I decided to open up my xbox since i have it 5 years and no guatantees and as a last resort try the ghetto fix. I put up a big ass fan and guess what.... It works.. At least i got an hour playtime and manage to safe. Then i stopped to do sports and gonna try tonight. This is definetly an console error with cooling causing the game to freeze. It is definetly pushing limits of old xbox. Thans guys i keep you posted.
eXile59
I've been having similar problem but it's been freezing on a different mission. Rock* has started ignoring my tweets and emails now. It's really frustrtating that they are working on some stupid disapearing car glitch and not worried that a large amount of people can't play the game. Do we have any recourse? I mean technically they sold us something that should work that doesn't. I wish we could report them to the BBB or something. $65 for a game I can't play. UmerF
UPDATE ON MY SITUATION: So I switched out my GTA V copy and it started working just fine. Before on that copy I could run it fine installed on HDD or USB but on this copy it crashes if I install on HDD and asks me to change the installation source so I used Kingston DataTraveller G3 16GB USB and installed Disc 1 on it and didn't install any disc any where. I moved saved files to USB as well but I made more save files on HDD and now my game does not crash when I enter into Ammu-Nation with Firing Range which is a good thing and my story line is not stuck anymore. So once again this is not a hardware issue at all, it's just software. Bad programming is bad programming, nothing you can do about it but get your DVDs replaced until you get a working one. That might help you guys as it helped me and many others. Too-Da-Loo, kidos!

Don't blow the air in theback of the xbox that is where the air should come out. Blocking that exit with the airflow from the fan does make it overheat. This. I have been monitoring this thread for the past few weeks. I have a first gen, non-HDMI Xbox and usually have game freezes every 20-30 minutes (always seems like it is on the way back to a safe house after a long mission, no?). Had the RROD repaired once several years ago. I tried all of the installation permutations for the install and play disc, using a 32 GB USB key, and also tried dropping the resolution to 720p, but none of that seemed to make a difference. Since it seemed like my first game after powering up would typically last the longest (sometimes 45-60 minutes), and then after crashing I would freeze much more frequently, I suspected it could be heat-related. I have a compact Vornado fan and tried blowing it at the rear of the console, but it didn't seem to help (it didn't occur to me that could be backwards). I was going to try to take my Xbox apart yesterday, but I looked up the instructions and was intimidated (plus I don't have a torx bit). Haven't done that before and don't want to void whatever "pity" warranty I might have left. Finally, to my point - on a whim (I don't know anything about where the Xbox internal components are located), I decided to prop up my fan and angle it at the left (HDD) side of the Xbox, right at the vent holes by the HDD, and put it on the highest fan speed. To my surprise, I was able to play the game for 10+ hours yesterday with ZERO crashes. Granted, the experience was suboptimal due to the excessive fan noise (I don't have headphones), but after dealing with crashes since launch, it was amazing to actually have a chance to play through ~20% of the game content without crashing (I think I went from around 40% to 60%). PiousMonkey
To previous commentor is your xbox lying horizontal when you have the fan pointed at the hdd vent? Mine is freezing now and im getting the 2 red rings. But only on this game! Pretty frustrating but installing on a flash drive did help me to get to around 45%. KnackerWhacker
I can't be arsed waiting anymore, mines packaged up ready to go back to amazon in the morning. This games old news now, a big part of the attraction was the hype, playing it when everyone else was playing it and discovering sh*t, what i did play of it was a very hollow experience anyway, same sh*t different number. So good riddance and thank you amazon for instant refund, before they've even received it back. Good luck to the rest of you.

hesselgren
remember that if you strip your console and put dvd away from gpu, you will make cooling less effective. you must add a fan right on top of the gpu heatsink. the cpu heatsink seems to do the job as it is. a floorfan standing beside the console will never be as effective as a small fan directly on heatsink.
