No overheating issues here, just a plain glitchy game. :panic:

lolol still sticking to that story? Use your head and stop having such tunnel vision. Obviously the same "glitchy" game that doesn't work on an older xbox, will work on a newer one? Hardware, hardware, hardware. Cooling it down resolves some people issues? Even bigger flag! Hop off that there Microsoft schlong, and come to terms that you are wrong.

It's not a debate, your rebuttal is meaningless.

You have no idea what you're talking about. I've been following this for more than the past two pages. Search. Look around. There are many fixes, many issues, many problems. This has nothing to do with defending anybody. This is trying to get working solutions to fix this broken game.

EDIT: Let's do a quick search:

gamingsuperaddict, on 17 Sept 2013

I've had it freeze 3 times already. Once in the first mission, once driving around, and now while in another mission *spoiler alert*....rescuing michael's kid, and trying to drive into another area. I know my system is ok, because every other game I have runs just fine. And my playstation is a slim model, and is in good condition. I really hope they patch it soon. This is a nightmare

My ps3 keeps freezing. anyone else having this problem? hat should i do?

LexLuger34, on 24 Sept 2013

Have not been able to play GTA V at all since I purchased it last week. Have done all the troubleshooting measures and nothing works, have even done a PS3 system restore.

I wanted to know if there is anyone on this forum who owns the 60GB fat PS3 who has been able to successfully play GTA V?

hiZin_, on 19 Sept 2013

I'm on a new slim, right when I put the game in it loads until there are 4 stars in the top right corner and freezes, tried installing on usb and it says disk is unreadable at 35% every time.

DaMan5one8 Posted 2 days ago

I wanted to update my situation.....10 month old slim with HDMI......I got the game on day 1 and it kept freezing on bike repo mission, the first real mission of the game. It would freeze in the same exact spot each and every time. I was going out of my mind. I finally went out and got a new copy (@Walmart) thinking, after reading this thread, that it wouldn't change a thing, but I have been playing for 6 hours now and haven't had a single freeze, crash or reboot at all!!!!!!!!!! I still won't forget about all of you and will continue to voice my concerns about the problems with this game to rockstar and whoever else will listen as I had an awful 7 days of anger and frustration that will not be soon forgotten.

Right i have had a look around.

Early production runs of the Xbox 360 are equipped with a 12x DVD drive, capable of a maximum read rate of 15.85 MB/s

this would suggest that early xbox's will have the Hitachi GDR-3120L dvd drive in the system. as above a maximum of 15.85mbs read speed. newer systems came with a much better dvd drive than the one above.

The dvd drive i have on my 360 slim, is the newest benq drive. its weird that my gta 5 wont work without the usb method. to say the drive i have is the quickest of the 3...

Ok so I have the disc version and I'm playing on a 160gb ps3 with plenty of room on the HDD. Problem is that ill be playing the game for a couple of hours or so but then out of nowhere, no matter what I'm doing, it freezes on me. I notice an fps drop at first and then it freezes.

Is anyone else having the same problem??

Kaversmed Posted 21 hours ago

I have a very similar problem. I played the game for pretty much 30 hours without any problems, but around 40% in the game it started to freeze at random moments. Now I can't even play for more than 10 minutes before it freezes. All my other games work perfectly. I've noticed the blu ray drive is making a lot of noises (like it's loading constantly), but since it is working with all my other games I came to the conclusion it must be the disc somehow.

I then tried another copy of GTA V... same result. So what is it? Console seems to be working fine with every other game except GTA V! Is it the composition of particular PS3's and GTA V? I'm going crazy here and seems like a lot of people are having similar problems across all platforms and models. Mine is a fat 80GB btw.

I usually know when the freeze is coming. Suddenly I can't bring the phone out, HUD disappears, can't shoot or hijack cars and then it freezes. :( Only comfort right now is knowing I'm not alone with this problem.

A-Goose_Posted A day ago

I have played this gta disk about 3 times it worked perfectly all times. Then I went away for the weekend and played the same disk on a different ps3 and a different house with a different router but same account, it worked perfectly again. Then when coming to play it on my ps3 (the ps3 which I played it 3 times on, the original one) with the same router i did before. It got to the "loading story mode" screen where it has a loop of pictures and gives information about the game. This is where it goes wrong, it does not go on further than this it just keeps loading. Nothing is frozen the symbol in the bottom right hand corner is still spinning but does not go into the game.

I cleaned the disk, and cleaned the ps3 laser with a cleaning disk. I first thought maybe it would be a scratch on the disk but that would make the game freeze if I'm correct? (There is no scratches on the disk) I thought it might of been my ps3 so I tried other games and they all worked perfectly.

Then I went back to the 2d ps3 which I played it on to make sure. It worked perfectly. So before I left I deleted the saved data utility and game data utility (I didn't mind because I wasn't very far). I got back to the first ps3 to try it again! It again did the exactly the same thing....

I don't know what to do now and don't really want to buy another disk because someone (my girl friend...) threw away the recite! If you have any suggestions please comment I'll be so grateful or a fix....

Don't really want to delete my saved game because I'm around 70% done

So the game's been running smoothly for the most part on my PS3, it crashed once a couple days after release but worked fine after that. Earlier today i was just free roaming and decided to get my car out from Franklin's Grove St garage to customize it, on my way to LS Customs the radio switched off and then the mini map starting looking all weird, textures started messing up then BAM, the game completely froze again. I put the game on again a little later after that incident, i was free roaming, everything running smoothly, then i went back to the garage to take the exact same car out, drove to LS Customs, this time it let me customize the car, but straight after i took the car back out the radio switched off, and once again, the game crashed.

I'm playing right now and it's running smoothly so far, it's whenever i take that particular car out (the new model Lambo, i forget the name) of my garage the game tends to f*ck up... any one else experiencing anything similar? or am i the only unlucky motherf*cker that this is happening to?

I have had the game since the midnight release, and it is totally unplayable. I have the 120g slim PS3, contacted R*, did the uninstall - file system, data rebuild... no change whatsoever. One day last week I turned it on just to see what would happen and got 5 hours in ( I didn't want to stop b/c I was worried it would crash again ) sure 'nuff... the next day it wouldn't work at all. Freezes during Franklyn's first mission, or on the LOADING STORY MODE screen. I don't understand why there is no communication from R* around this problem... it's a pretty big deal.

_____________

The poll once more:

Have you been having technical issues with GTA V?
  1. Yes - Game has problems installing, borderline / totally unplayable (PS3) (23 votes [6.20%])

  2. Yes - Game has problems installing, borderline / totally unplayable (360) (31 votes [8.36%])

  3. Yes - The game keeps freezing (PS3) (32 votes [8.63%])

  4. bullet_star_rated.png Yes - The game keeps freezing (360) (59 votes [15.90%])

  5. Not too bad - there are textures that pop in right in front of me though (either version) (40 votes [10.78%])

  6. Not really, but the fans on my PS3 run faster and louder on this game (15 votes [4.04%])

  7. Not really, but the fans on my 360 run faster and louder on this game (5 votes [1.35%])

  8. Other problems (please post!) (72 votes [19.41%])

  9. No problems at all! (94 votes [25.34%])

    _____________

How do you suggest these people fix their old 360s?

@Madoperator2000: @XboxSupport3 2/2 this bug only shows up with Gta V. Other games and downloaded games have this bug minimal. What is issue? Known already?

@XboxSupport3: @Madoperator2000 We don't have any details on that. The next recommended step would be to repair the console ^JX

MS is sticking head in the sand

There are plenty of people reporting very similar problems across both systems and every model. I don't believe this to be a simple overheating issue either.

Picked up a new xbox today and it's running the game fine using the same usb install and save as the old fan modded xbox. New one is running pretty warm though!

Bunny be trollin'

There are actually ZERO fixes. Just minor workarounds that seem to work for some but not others. The ONLY true, legit fix will be from a patch, if there ever is one. I'd actually like to see someone send their console in to MS and retest once they get it back. But to hell with spending 100 bucks when new slims are just a bit more. I'm still waiting on mine from amazon. I've progressed less than 2% more in gta v in the last 7 days. My freezing is continuing to occur more frequently, minor workarounds be dammed. It seems to me this will only be solved if/when rockstar get around to patching the game. Good luck trying to pinpoint the issue, just too many variables.

Is my fan mod not considered a fix? It worked like a dream : D

no, it hasn't fixed everyone's 360 who tried the fan mod, its fixed yours, but its not a fix for everyone.

same as my usb drive fixed my xbox slim, but it hasn't for others.

we have some solutions on this thread, and so far, all i can say to everyone with the freezing/restarting issue is to try each one out, and see if it fixes your problems. if it cures it, great post up to let us know.

if anyone fixes it by other means, please post on here what you did.

I just registered to let you know that I am having the exact same issues on an old PS3 with a relatively new 160gb HDD. I'm not the only one, either. I don't know if the problem can have a similar cause on two different consoles, but it's an odd coincidence - the problem seems to be related to older PS3 consoles as well, though this doesn't always hold true, some newer slim models are affected.

Looks like my hope for a fix/patch by this weekend isn't going to happen... I think both R* and M$ are digging their heels into the sand and are preparing for a fight. Of course, that leaves us gamers S.O.L. in the middle.

After BadUsername posted the following last night...

ok guys just got off the phone with R* support and i have some GREAT NEWS!!! the guy i talked to (justin) said that this has been a very big problem. BUT he also said that overheating has not been brought to their attention before this point. I told him about you guys that have been opening your xboxs and cooling the system down, and the game is working. He was VERY surprised and put me on hold. when he came back he said that he had passed the info i gave him onto a higher level of management. what i got from it is that they are taking this problem very seriously but have been unable to find the solution. PLEASE CALL R* SUPPORT AND TELL THEM WHAT HAS BEEN GOING ON IN THIS FORUM! We might be getting somewhere guys! R*'s # is 1(866)-922-8694

Edit: he also put in a recommendation for me at R* studios lol, and sent me a link to contact someone for a job. As you cant tell this might have been a breakthrough. They were very happy with this info!

...I got the following email from Rockstar this morning:

Rebecca G, Sep 27 07:36 am (EDT):

Hello MeatButcher,

I am very sorry to inform you that after reviewing you case we agree with Microsoft that the issue is indeed a hardware issue and not a software issue.

Your console with specs as stated should run the game fine, if it doesn't you would need to take further steps with Microsoft.

We cannot take any costs of that procedure.

Kind regards,

Rebecca G

Tier 1 Technical Support

So, Rockstar is viewing this as a hardware issue. I'm not sure why R* thinks that M$ agrees that it is a hardware issue, because I just called Xbox Support and I got a totally different story.

The Xbox Support rep that I talked to says that because GTA V is the ONLY game that is crashing/freezing, it is clearly the game. He didn't have much to say when I told him that some of us have fixed the freezing by gutting their Xbox 360 consoles to improve the cooling; though he was shocked to hear that some of us have gone to such extremes. The support Rep that I was talking to also told me that they are receiving a HIGH volume of callers specifically on GTA V. Close to 50% of the calls they received over the past week have been specifically related to GTA V.

Lastly, he told me that he was going to bump my issue to the next Tier of support and that they will be calling me after Xbox Support directly contacts Rockstar Support. The support rep didn't got into much detail, but I can imagine with all the data they have been collecting from Xbox owners, they are getting ready to make an ultimatum to Rockstar.

If you are an Xbox owner and GTA V is the ONLY game that is causing issues on your console, call Xbox Support so that they can document it. If you are in the USA, call 1-800-469-9269

Get some popcorn, things could get interesting during the next week (at least I hope).

So I went out and got a new PS3 (had a 200 gift cert to best buy and I've been waiting to get a PS3 to play the handful of games not available on the 360) and GTAV plays that without a problem so far.

I'm starting to think there's multiple problems with this game:

1) the installer seems 'dumb' and doesn't verify the integrity of data it writes to the disk which can cause texture corruption and hard crashes

2) race conditions between the competing resources and loading times HD/USB/DVD.

3) (and may be most common) overheating issues on both consoles, but may be more apparent on 360s.

My guess is, this is probably the same issue that happened in LA Noire, which was not widely publicized: It would cause BOTH xbox 360s and PS3s to overheat:

http://touch.destructoid.com/destructoid/#!/entry/la-noire-overheats-xbox-360s-as-well-as-ps3s-update,51c1d178c5f0cf15b37728f2

Keep in mind from the above link, Rockstar originally blamed Microsoft until it surfaced that PS3 consoles have this problem as well. It sounds like they are following the same procedure for GTA V here (and again, may be why most game 'journalists' are only reporting on the 360).

Also, GTAV is probably using a lot of the same code from LA Noire, if not the same graphical optimizations. It well within reason to think that we are seeing the same bug manifest itself here.

Playing it on the PS3, the graphics look relatively the same, but I've noticed some texures appear more clear, which leads me to think the 360s asset pipeline is not optimized, causing some pixel shading to work overtime and overburdening the GPU.

I still they think it's very likely they are doing some form of software overclocking on the GPU, but why this causes some 360s to overheat and not others is unknown.

just because destroid has a retarded url naming scheme...and in case anyone missed it from my above post:

THIS SAME THING HAPPENED WITH LA NOIRE and it's likely the same issue.

(different website, same content)

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/gamesblog/2011/may/19/la-noire-overheating

And again, Rockstar is taking the same PR action: blaming the consoles and not the software. They will be taking this action until a majority of users start complaining to the console makers about this issue. They will most likely ignore it and not provide a fix (For example: I think LA Noire still has the overheating problems).

I wish everybody luck here, we're all going to need it.

Good to see some folks are getting some play time!! Way to go, Thinking outside the box, literally, by gutting your box lol. Think I may try to gut mine as well, as try the fan fix! Have a question, How are those running PC fans powering them? I have a few PC fans laying around I think. Got a big box fan also. Any advice would be helpful as I try this.

Is it a bad idea to just continously dump ice cubes on my heatsink? Just wondering lol

You know what would have fixed all this (For me, anyway) A freaking PC release.......This is the first console game I have bought new on release day in probably two years! IF this was a PC game, and I had an issue...BAM....Just install my own parts and be done!

I've a 2005 xbox 360 20gb premium that's been in for repair due to RROD twice in 2008 and 2009.

GTA V has crashed everytime I've played the game, at first this happened only after 60-90 minutes of play until I got to the Father and Son mission where it would crash every time just after the chase scene (missions seem to be more demanding than open play),

I then contacted R* and they told me to clear the caches on the HDD, after doing that it started to crash even more often after only 20-30 minutes.

Today I bought a 16GB SanDisk Cruzer Extreme USB 3.0 stick and installed disc 2 on it as I've been convinced it's overheating related with the DVD drive heating up during operation making it worse. Well I just played for 2 hours straight, and completed a few main missions and some open play, this is the longest I've ever played for in one go however it did eventually freeze but at least I can have a decent session now.

If the crashing gets bad again I will open up the xbox and blow a large fan into it like some of you guys have had success with, we shouldn't be having to do this or buy USB flash drives. Can't believe this game wasn't thoroughly tested on all revisions of the 360 console.

Edit: Something I've not tried is lowering the resolution to 480p this may keep things running cooler at the expense of image quality (yes, this sucks!), anyone had any luck with this?

Guy's , i have a Xbox 360 Arcade (20 GB HDD ,with HDMI)which was manufactured in 2008 .Since my hardware is also ancient like many of you here , i took a gamble of buying the game , and fortunately , it works like a breeze(no freeze , no overheating) .
I would like to give you details on how i installed this game by selecting a little different method .As instructed by R* before , i installed disc 1 on my hdd and is playing the game from disc 2 , now what i'm doing different is that i am 'Saving' all my savedata to my xbox 360 memory card(512mb) .So in this way , the game is using 3 sources to run the game(and hence less burden i guess). Most of you have mentioned that the game freezes during Franklin's first mission ,so i can assume that it freezes near the checkpoints (there are 3 of them in this mission)So i guess this might be a problem with Saving gamedata .
So guys for experiments sake , please buy a memory card(its very cheap) for your 360 and try out this method .

The problem this thread is about is definitely caused by overheating, I installed my fan mod, and the game works perfectly fine. It's not a console problem so much as Rockstar not optimizing their game enough.

I made an account to tell people this.

I have two xbox's one with HDMI and one without.

Froze both and over heated the HDMI, both before finishing the first mission.

Dusted off HDMI with can of dust off all on the inside of the Xbox. Next I bought a USB powered fan a little smaller than your hand. Rigged it w/ some books and the stand the little fan came with to blow directly to the (GPU? Whatever it is that gets hot) and that allowed me to finish the first mission and save.

Had to shut It off because of errands and hopefully this works for duration of playing.

Congratulations, you just gave me douche chills.

Let me put this in simple terms you can understand:

1)It's the only game that overheats the console and, trust me, if my old xbox can handle skryim at 1080p, then it can handle GTAV's jagged, poorly AA'ed graphics

2)it also happens on ps3

3)purplebunny has a new xbox slim

4)it's possible to overclock a GPU to the point it overheats

5)it is much easier and cheaper to do #4 than it is to optimize your game's performance

6)many, many, many other bugs have been posted for GTAV

I agree, this should have been released on PC as well... they blame piracy but the console versions were pirated almost a week before the release date. It's a shame to make a game with this much detail and have it drowned out by aliasing and low frame rate.

I'm tempted to find a computer case mod for the 360, that would be easy to cool.

If this came out on the PC, there would have been no overheating problems, and if they did exist, the community would have fixed them in a week, along with the host of other bugs related to the existing game.

It really is a shame, because it really is a fun game (so far) and the game looks great, but the jagged lines that exist EVERYWHERE kills my eyes.

I played saints row 4 on the PC with max settings and it was so much smoother.
