Its really getting into the media now, On ign alone there are at least 2,000 comments, most of them people with issue on xbox 360 (slim and original) and ps3. I'm sure it wont be long before rockstar releases at statement. For the mean time comment like crazy on their twitter pages (rockstar support and the main rockstar page) and like shadowfunk suggested use #GTAVBUG as a hash tag (and maybe a link to this forum)

Bought from Microsoftstore.com.

No stores nearby? http://content.microsoftstore.com/en-us/lookup?view=allstores

Can I even do that if I bought it online?

You can here in the UK. Not sure about US consumer law. It's worth a try, depending how close the store is of course, it could cost you more in gas money getting there than sending it to R*.

Hell. YES. It was the disc (for me anyway). I got a replacement and it runs a hell of a lot smoother.

Hmmm... I'm thinking the way some discs were burned left some data off the discs but some how the discs were able to install even with errors? Looks like Rockstar's installer is very primative and doesn't check to make sure all data is there.

I'm another unfortunate soul afflicted with this issue. i played with a couple methods and all to the same result so i promptly returned it on launch day. I submitted a ticket to rockstar support

http://support.rockstargames.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

thats the link to opening a ticket, i feel if enough people keep sending them requests they'll have to address this issue. i also pasted a link to kotaku's article on the matter as well. really hoping for a patch as this is the only worthwhile thing left this console has before i upgrade in november. rockstar obviously likes money and when this gets out and more and more people are returning their copies or older xbox owners are just avoiding it they'll have to fix it one would hope

Can anyone else confirm that it was the disc that was bad? I am thinking of exchanging my game..

Since my phone conversation with Rockstar Support last Saturday and posting their comments on here (see page 12) I haven't been too active on the forum. I guess you can say that I've been venting my frustration by other means.

I'm glad to hear this issue is FINALLY getting some attention (took long enough).

Hello all once again. Just been off Xbox support and was talking to someone who was actually listening. It took a while to get him to understand what the problem was but when I mentioned this forum etc and many others having the same problem the conversation was on the right track.

Just a few important points from the conversation:

  • The agent from MS said that they have got word from Rockstar and they have said they are aware of the problem
  • He said Rockstar are trying to fix the problem
  • Rockstar have not yet finalised the resolution of the problem
  • The best thing to do unfortunately is wait for the problem to be resolved and keep an eye on the Xbox and Rockstar support pages
  • Microsoft are collating all affected accounts (keep contacting them and telling them about this problem by providing your Gamertag)
  • The agent also said that Microsoft's "Advocacy team (highest support) is working closely with Rockstar to fix the issue
  • He finished off by saying "you can also give assurance to every out there experiencing this issue that we're working on this."

Although it doesn't fix the problem we are all having I just thought I would share this with everyone. The agent reiterated various times they are liaising with Rockstar to fix the problem. Fingers crossed

Great post cmck123. It looks like that Rockstar is finally focusing on the freezing issues. While it wasn't a public acknowledgement, I'm happy to hear that they finally realize that they have a problem on their hands that needs to be addressed. My guess is that Rockstar will publicly state that there is an issue once they have isolated the bug and formulated a fix. Ideally, they'll announce a date the patch will be uploaded at the same time.

I'm just concerned that there may be more than one glitch/bug that they'll need to identify and smash before all of the freezing issues will be resolved. I agree that the freezing issues is not just an older model issue. But the descriptions of the type of freezes the newer models are experiencing is not the same as what I'm experiencing. It's clear that we are experiencing similar issues, but could be resulting from different bugs. I guess only time will tell.

I can only hope that we all will be enjoying the GTA V experience bug free by this coming weekend.

We'll, I've made this account specifically to put my name in the hat for people unable to play gta.. My problems are identical to 95 percent of you(been following this thread for days). I've got a 2009-ish xbox fat, 60gig hard drive(my original) with HDMI cable. Never had any freezing with any game before now, and since testing every single one of my games both new and old, both downloaded and physical copies none (save gta5) have produced this kind of problem. I've tried all "quick fixes" given here and from Microsoft and nothing unfortunately has worked. Hope R* gets on the ball and at least acknowledges there's a problem. Good luck to us all in our attempts to play.

Great Update from Rockstar from the support team... I love the 'Test the game on a second console' !! I will just grab another one from the spares cabinet !!! WTF....Even if i had a spare, I would have to install it, transfer my saved games across (if that's supported) & then replicate the error which hours....

Before troubleshooting, please check the following:

· a. Turn the console off and on.

· b. Unplug all power cords and accessories, and then plug them back in firmly. Make sure all connections are secure.

· c. Update your console software.

Test the game on a second console.

This last step is potentially the trickiest step, depending on alternate hardware availability, but probably the most important step for determining the cause of major issues on any console. That step would be to test the disc on a separate console. If you have a friend or family member with an Xbox 360, we strongly recommend installing the game on their console, and see if issues persist.

Hello everyone. I have an Xbox that was repaired by Microsoft in 2009 for the RROD issue. It plays every other game fine.

I have a 60gb hard drive with no issues. I took it apart to clean it so no dust issues and it is well ventilated.

I have intermittent issues wih crashing. I haven't done any of the suggested reformatting fixes and I only have disc one installed. It is installed to the hard drive.

What I have found that lets me keep playing is I turned off in game music and for some weird reason I don't have the crashing issue if I am connected to Xbox live and am in a party. I just finished playing for 2 hours that way with no problems. I even played a mission that caused my Xbox to crash yesterday and again no problems this time.

Being in a party seems to keep me from crashing and I don't know why. Just wanted to share in case it helps someone else. I'm pissed off I spent the money on the special edition and have had so many problems with it crashing, but at least I'm not alone.

Hi everyone,

I spent the better part of 4 hours last night reading every possible forum post about this. My game worked fine for about 5 hours and then I got to a mission with Michael and it started crashing!!!.. I tried deleting all the game data and reinstalling multiple times on multiple different devices but nothing seemed to work. Then I saw a few posts like this one http://www.gamepur.com/news/12169-gta-v-freezecrash-issues-mostly-older-xbox-360-fix-xbox-support-available.html.

I had read earlier about the problems with installing disc 2 but without any other options I thought what the hell. So I followed the instructions and when I got to installing disc 2 it got to around 25% installed and crashed. It prompted me with an error message saying the disc could be damaged so I ejected the disc and had a look to find absolutely no scratches!

As you can imagine this was driving me insane and I was almost ready to just forget about the whole thing. I had read other posts where people were suggesting the same thing and that it might be a problem with a bad batch of discs.

Luckily my brother had also bought a copy on the weekend and I thought its not gonna hurt to try his disc. So I ended up reinstalling and when I got to installing disc 2....... No problems at all! Started the game and played for around 4 hours without a hiccup, I also didn't experience any of the problems that have been posted about running the game with disc 2 installed either. I even put my disc back in and restarted and not a problem either.

Bought my xbox around 2009-10 and its never skipped a beat until now, but it looks like its just a disc problem.

I hope this helps anyone else out there with the same problems, I know there are alot of us out there!.

I spoke with my friend, he has the Xbox 360 slim with a 250g hard drive and he told me it was working great so far, i just hope what everyone is saying about the older consoles it not true.

I have the 2010 360 S (250 GB edition) and I have still been experiencing all the same freezing issues as everyone else. The furthest I've gotten is to the first Franklin mission, stole the car, and the game froze as I was driving. I've tried the uninstall/clear cache/reinstall process, but to no avail.

Anyone else with a newer xbox having these problems? Don't know why this is happening.

Pretty much all my mates have newer xboxs, and have the same issues as me (I have a 2008 xbox arcade with a 60gb HDD). Im guessing its a Disc issue, as it is happening on PS3 as well.

I sent them a tweet to their support account...The response I got was 'try the disc in another console to rule out the disc'.

All they are looking for is a response of 'oh it worked in joe blows 360' so they can dump you on Microsoft tech support and pass the buck. I can't see it being a 'disc issue'. Its brand new, not scratched, didn't give me any hiccups when installing to the HDD or a USB stick (Either disc).

Rockstar warrenty the game for 90 days, go to their support page and make a request for disc/warrenty issue.

So I created this to say. I'm having the same typical problems as everybody else. I have an old white rrod replacement. No HDMI 20gig HD. I do have the wireless N 2 antenna adapter.

I have reinstalled like 5 times, still freezing in or right after the first snow/bank level.

I have installed disk 1 to a 16 gig kingston flash drive, still freezes.

I have tried to install disk 2 to hd but am getting the read error message.

I am about the try the below, however i have a question. It says clear cache 3 times. However after I clear the cache once I don't have the option to do it again. How do I do this. I will report back with my findings.

I've just got off chat with Xbox Support. They advised me this is not an hardware issue and that they have received "a lot complaints about this game" They told me to do this and it worked for me:

1. Delete all GTAV game data.
2. Clear system cache three times.
3. Delete marketplace data from storage system items.
4. Unplug console for three minutes.
5. Install disc 1.
6. Power off, do not insert disc 2.
7. Restart.
8. Install disc 2.
9. Play.

If issues persist repeat steps 1-7 then play from disc 2.

Hey guys, I'm going to be buying GTA V soon, so I need to know if my 360 is going to be able to handle GTA V and whether or not it will crash. I have an Xbox 360 Arcade that I bought in October of 2009. It has worked ever since then, no problems with any games at all, an occasional freeze ever once in a while, but probably from long extended play times. I have a 20GB HDD, I have 13GB of space ready for GTA V. I have the Jasper chipset model. Is my Xbox 360 going to be able to run the game? Like I said before, every other game I have ever installed and played has worked fine, no problems. Maybe sometimes a few FPS drops, but probably because that's how some of the games were made. I need to know before I buy the game because i don't wanna waste 60 bucks if it's just gonna crash and freeze on me.

Guys please answer me!!

Its a hit and miss scenario, You might be fine, or not. I would buy it after a fix/patch comes out.

judging by the 40k plus views of this thread... keep your receipt lol! or just holdout for the patch or whatever resolution comes of this, as super annoyed as i am about this problem im really excited that enough people are experiencing this to where it could get fixed and we may be able to play it yet.

You know, I just thought of something. It could maybe have to do with being connected to the internet and Xbox Live. If your console is crashing and your Xbox is hooked up to the internet, that could be a factor as to what is causing this issue. However, if your console still crashes even if you are not connected to Xbox Live, then it could be that you have an Older console prior to the Jasper model. I have Jasper and Jasper chipset is known to protect against the RRoD and other issues. Check to see what model you have, if it's not the Jasper model, or the slim, that could be a problem. But I heard the Slim models have the problem too, and like I said before Xbox Live could have something to do with it. If you don't have the internet hooked up and it still freezes, your console could have a defect. Just saying.

Mine has a jasper chip and I'm still having issues on and offline. It might be different for other people though. If rockstar are taking there time deveolping a fix, we might as well try find out a way to play the game.

Just posted on Xbox NZ's facebook page (I'm a Kiwi) and they replied that they now they are trying to contact rockstar to find out any details of this error and if/when a patch will be released. Xbox honestly has some pretty good customer support, maybe rockstar could learn a thing or two from them :p

I have the same problem, spoke to microsoft support they said to send it in for repair after being next to know help. (the usual turn it off turn it back on saga)

I am experiencing the same issue as most of you, constant hard freezes on an old console, (MS replaced it after RROD).

Hopefully with this exposure we can get a fix, keep on R* twitter account too!

From using my day one 'non hdmi' 360 which had been rrod referbed twice, I've borrowed a friends hdmi 360 which is still the old cream build, and have had no problems with it. His has also had a rrod repair. So not sure if the rrod repair is relevant to the issues. Its probably just that most the oldest consoles have had the rrod repair at some point.
