Xbox 360 - Game Keeps Freezing on Franklin's 1st Mission

what was your problem ?

Nearly every issue you can think of. Freezing, lagging, pop-in, blurred textures, vanishing roads, low-FPS, not loading past the "loading story" screen, device error and so on. All fixed by what Xbox Support told me to do. This is on a 250GB Slim, not an 'older model.'

Hey, I made it into a Kotaku article.

Not sure why the headline is older 360s when mine is an as new slim 250GB.

Anyway, 24 hours later the temporary fix from Xbox Support is still working for me.

just tried your fix but didn't work for me. Gutted but i do have an old xbox with hdmi post RROD.

just want to play the game, its really annoying me.

Hey guys, I'm going to be buying GTA V soon, so I need to know if my 360 is going to be able to handle GTA V and whether or not it will crash. I have an Xbox 360 Arcade that I bought in October of 2009. It has worked ever since then, no problems with any games at all, an occasional freeze ever once in a while, but probably from long extended play times. I have a 20GB HDD, I have 13GB of space ready for GTA V. I have the Jasper chipset model. Is my Xbox 360 going to be able to run the game? Like I said before, every other game I have ever installed and played has worked fine, no problems. Maybe sometimes a few FPS drops, but probably because that's how some of the games were made. I need to know before I buy the game because i don't wanna waste 60 bucks if it's just gonna crash and freeze on me.

Sure.

"I've just got off chat with Xbox Support. They advised me this is not an hardware issue and that they have received "a lot complaints about this game" They told me to do this and it worked for me:

1. Delete all GTAV game data.

2. Clear system cache three times.

3. Delete marketplace data from storage system items.

4. Unplug console for three minutes.

5. Install disc 1.

6. Power off, do not insert disc 2.

7. Restart.

8. Install disc 2.

9. Play.

If issues persist repeat steps 1-7 then play from disc 2.

_____________"

It may also be worth mentioning that I'm not connected to XBL.

Think im just going to give in and buy second hand newer xbox. Sick of not being able to play!

As above. Mine is a 250GB Slim model. There doesn't seem to be any correlation between model and these issues. There are plenty of PS3 users here with exactly the same problems, too.

EDIT: The only way this is going to get resolved is if people are reporting these issues directly to R*, MS and Sony.

hey guys i just fixed the problem after tryin evry thing first my problem is when i reach 6.5 % of the game and this fix worked for me and for another friend he had a problem with starting the game looke guys i know that may seems crazy but i just start a song ( music) at the backgraound on xbox and leave it on and put the game on xbox just start the game and its work's like a dreaaaaam ! try this befor with another game plz try it and let me know if it work's for you

I can second this up to a point :) I just ripped a 59 minute Cd to my hard drive and started playing it. Usually I get no more than 5/7 mins of gameplay, I just had 26 mins! I had never got out the city but managed to fly across the map :D anyway this is no means a definitive fix, but it is a temporary boost.

Hey guys check out megagames.com looks like our story is starting to make some waves!

I've contacted both Kotaku and Megagames. Both stories are inaccurate. This is not just a problem with "older models of Xbox" and R* didn't provide the fix I posted. Strange that they both use this thread as the source but didn't bother to read it.

I am glad that they are finally starting to report on this, but I have a new slim that I got 10 months ago, brand new and it is not just in the old systems. I only freeze when the cut scene should start on the bike repo mission. I can drive all over the entire map for hours, which I have and am getting bored with, and It never freezes. It just happens right after Lamar scares the bum and he falls, right when franklin should open the garage door and the shooting should begin. I am so sick of deleting and reinstalling and I have already spent enough on new flash drives, not to mention the game. Over $100 and 6 days later, I feel like the big heist was on me : (

I agree that putting your game saves in the cloud is better as that allowed me to get to my present location, which is on the very first real mission with franklin and lamar repoing the bike......at least I don't have to go through the begging all over again, lol......I know it by heart and it haunts me in my sleep....which I am not getting much as I am trying everything I can to just get that damn repo!?!?!?!?!

Just to update. Approximately thirty hours after using the fix Xbox Support provided the 'oily textures' have appeared.

EDIT: It's still playable but the bad textures are quite distracting and they ruin any sense of immersion.

has anyone eliminated the possibilities of an overheating?

that's something that can be guaranteed to cause abrupt shutdown no matter what generation of xbox you're on. Obviously the older models would have the issue more commonly because of the poor heat control early pre-HDMI consoles had (and even up until the newest 'E' SKU)

EDIT:

I'm going to try this and see if my 360 is still crashing; I actually have one of these lying around. Edited by Salaterez

If you read through the forum - these issues happen on near enough every version of the PS3 and 360. Mine is a 250GB S. I also happen to keep my console dust-free and well ventilated, as every one will say, and have had no issues with any other game.

EDIT: I think I've spent more time looking for solutions than playing the game. It may be time to return for a full refund.

Just made an account to help add to the data or find a solution.

  • I have a refurbished Xbox 360 original with 20 GB HDD, like most have that are having issues.
  • Tried every kind of troubleshooting listed on here or anywhere else. The problems first began in the prologue after installation of only disc 1 and playing on disc 2. Finally made it to the first mission where you repo the red or white car back to Franklin's house. After 3 days, I finally managed to make it to his house.
  • After many installations, clearing cache, etc. I couldn't get past this point until today.
  • I had a seperate USB (16GB) and tried many times installing disc 2 to only get "cannot read" error at random times of installation. I cleared the cache 3 times, reformatted, turned off the Xbox then tried to install again and it got to 100% (previous best was 43% after multiple failures in a row).
  • After all that work I managed to get to the next cut scene (employee of the month scene), started to drive to the next mission and it froze again. Haven't been able to make it this far again.
  • I hope this advice helps someone somehow but for now I cannot foresee any of this working for whatever reason. I'll keep posting back after trying new stuff but nothing seems to work.

Made this account cos it seems the only people who are actively trying to solve this problem *cough* R* MS *cough* are on this page.

Same problem. I have a 2008 refurb 360 with 20GB HDD and HDMI port.

Tried installing install disk onto HDD without installing play disk - Freeze

install disk on HDD and play disk on 32GB flash drive - Freeze

install disk on flash drive and play disk on HDD - Freeze

both onto flash drive - Freeze

720p on all config - Freeze

Bunny's method - Freeze

I managed to get up to the employee of the month cutscene before it froze up again before i tried bunny's method, now it freezes before i can reach the garage when u start up as franklin

Also now after all this somehow whenever i delete and reinstall the game, when it loads the prologue mission i don't get an option of where to save it at so i can't save the game to cloud. Any tips on how to do this?

Hi,

I was having constant freezes every 10-12 minutes and yesterday I did something that allowed me to play for 2 hours. The game did not freeze, I just had to stop, so I still dont know if this fixed the problem for me or if it will break again, I'll try to play more today and let you know.

My fix:

- Completely remove the hard drive (I have a 20 gb one)

- Use a USB stick on the front usb port (it's a kingston datatraveler 3.0 elite 32gb).

- When I turned on the console it asked me to update (i guess it was because the update is stored in the hard drive)

- I deleted the cache from the usb stick although the only data I had in it was the save game after the first mission

- Downloaded my gamertag to the usb stick

- Only install the "install disk" on usb stick

So basically, replacing the hard drive with a usb stick allowed me to get 2 hours of gameplay. I wasn't even going to try this (it was @XboxSupport1 who suggested me to try this) because I had seen people playing from a USB drive / stick and had no luck, but for me it seemed to work fine. It might be that you get different results with different drives / sticks, so I'd suggest giving it a try.

As I say, I'll come back later when I have been able to test this more... Anyway, I would really like to get a patch so we dont need to do all this tricks just to play a game that is not cheap at all.

Do you have a HDMI connection? and where do you save your game? on the USB or in the cloud?

My xbox is from 2007, I got it refurbished after RRoD. It doesn't have HDMI, I'm using the VGA cable at 1360x768. I'm storing the save games in the usb because I don't have a Gold account.

I'm wondering if what helped was using the USB or re-downloading the gamertag, as someone has suggested these days.

I just finished chatting with an Xbox Support Chat rep. I am linking the chat here because there is a LOT of information (even though he wasn't able to solve my issue.)

Mark Andrew: Thank you for contacting Xbox Chat Support. My name is Mark. Please give me a moment to review your stated concern.

Mark Andrew: As I understand, you are having a problem with GTA V. Am I correct?

Matt: yes

Mark Andrew: I see. I'll be happy to help you with that, Matt.

Matt: Okay. I have been following a forum on gtaforums.com with people who are all having a similar problem. here is the link:

Matt: http://gtaforums.com/topic/594765-xbox-360-game-keeps-freezing-on-franklins-1st-mission/

Mark Andrew: Okay. Are you chatting with the Gamertag (removed)?

Matt: no. My name on that forum is Pyroman5

Matt: I will copy my post into this chat box when i find it

Matt: Yesterday my roommate got the game and after the install I was able to play his for about 5 hours with no problems. Bought the game today and popped it in and it said it was unreadable from the start. I have a white 360 (60gb) with an hdmi port on it. Things I've tried: My disc in his 360 (slim version)...it tried reading it but then just ejected the disc. His copy in my xbox...same thing happens as my copy...doesn't load and says unreadable. Clearing cache. 720p Moved to cloud storage Deleted the blimp dlc No connection to xbox live All of these have not worked.

Mark Andrew: Okay.

Mark Andrew: Do you mean that you cannot even go to start the game?

Matt: I cannot. I hit A on the "play disc" section of the xbox dashboard and it tries to boot up the game. Sometimes I will get the "unreadable disc" error right away whereas sometimes it will start going through the intro and then either freeze or give me the error

Mark Andrew: I see.

Mark Andrew: Were you still able to play the other game discs?

Matt: I have been able to use the install disc yes

Mark Andrew: Okay.

Mark Andrew: Please give me 3 minutes to gather every options we have for this.

Matt: okay

Mark Andrew: Thank you for waiting.

Matt: no problem

Mark Andrew: Are you using the Slim Xbox model?

Matt: No. Mine is a White 60gb with the HDMI port

Mark Andrew: Do you mean that it is the Original version?

Matt: yes

Matt: I believe so

Mark Andrew: Okay.

Mark Andrew: If you insert the disc, does it give you an option to view the Options?

Mark Andrew: Please insert it and press Y.

Matt: Sometimes

Mark Andrew: Please insert it now and check if it will give you and option to install.

Matt: I have tried installing the disc multiple times and it always crashes at about 51% of the install

Mark Andrew: Okay. If it gives you an option to install, you should install it.

Matt: I am going to try again right now

Mark Andrew: This is a known issue with GTA V disc. And the primary solution is to install it on a flash drive with atleast 16G space.

Matt: Unfortunately, I don't have one right now. I might try to pick one up but I really wanted to know if there is a solution to this coming in a patch or anything. Rockstar isn't confirming that it is a problem with their game

Mark Andrew: This is a known issue with the game though Rockstar doesn't want to claim it. We also have fixed most of these cases by installing it on a flash drive which is more readable than CD.

Mark Andrew: There is no other solution yet as of now but to install on a flash drive.

Matt: Okay. I am installing it onto my hard drive for now since I don't have a flash drive (I know it has known issues) but like I said, I have tried to install the second disc before and it fails at about 51% of the install

Mark Andrew: Yes. We have heard that it also fails to install into the hard drive most of the time. That is why we recommend to use a flash drive for it.

Matt: If I can't install to the Hard Drive then how will it be different with the flash drive?

Matt: It just failed at 47%

Mark Andrew: We don't have a concrete clue about this.

Mark Andrew: But we have just observed that it mostly works on flash drive.

Mark Andrew: I just want to clarify again that this is not about the Xbox but with the GTA V game disc.

Matt: Do you mind if I post this in that forum that I linked to you earlier? people still don't know if it is a hardware or game disc error

Mark Andrew: Yes.

Mark Andrew: I can also give you the reference # of this conversation. This is however, documented.

Matt: I would like the reference # as well. Also, is there anything else that could maybe fix this problem?

Mark Andrew: As of now, we haven't found any other alternative yet.

Mark Andrew: We will surely post it as soon as we find another work around on this.

Matt: And where would you be posting it?

Mark Andrew: We will post it on the Forums.

Mark Andrew: Here is your reference number: (deleted).

Matt: Alright thank you!

Mark Andrew: No problem, my friend.

Mark Andrew: Is there anything else I can help you with?

Matt: Not at the moment

Mark Andrew: If that was everything, I'd like to thank you again for contacting Xbox Customer Support. To properly end the chat session, please click on the X button above the avatar photo on the upper right hand corner near the top of the chat window. Have a wonderful rest of your day!

Sorry for such a long post everyone but as you can see, this is NOT a problem with your xbox.

I liked that. It was nice of him to say that. Too bad he couldn't help, but at least he was nice. I'm really looking forward to seeing Rockstar give any info on this.

Seems Rockstar isn't going to admit there is something wrong with THEIR game. It's not our Xbox.

Right now it seems like R* is actually ignoring us. They aren't responding to tweets or e-mails whatsoever.
