Xbox 360 - Game Keeps Freezing on Franklin's 1st Mission

I've been reading this thread since page 1 and I was having the same problem, my old xbox is a 20gb pro I've got after the first got rrod'd (OPUS codename from the post above); BUT:

I think a found a working solution that allowed me to play for 3 hours straight!

1. I bought a 32gb usb flash, install the disc 1 there, 2. Install disc 2 to HDD and move your saved game (If you have one) to the cloud, don't let the game save to HDD because I did that and it started giving problems again, just save to the cloud and... well that worked for me.

Try it and tell me if this worked for you!

If they release a digital version and it works DON'T BUY IT.

Rockstar will need to solve this problem with a patch or honor those who bought the game with a digital version (if it works). I am not a video game lawyer but if they are unable to patch the game my logic tells me they would not be able to sell the physical game. They will have to remove the physical versions (of Xbox) from the store as you can't sell a game advertized as Xbox 360 when it doesn't play in some perfectly fine Xbox 360 versions.

You're right, morally, I probably shouldn't, but the game is so good I don't know if I could stop myself, especially if it's just a few button presses away. But, heh, that's all hypothetical, for all we know a digital copy might not even work. And you are right on the fact that it should work on all Xbox 360 consoles, they should either replace copies with working ones or replace their boxes with ones that have a huge disclaimer warning customers that it doesn't work on some consoles - and specify exactly which ones. That would require them to pinpoint what the issue is though, and every response we've got so far seems to indicate they just don't care enough to work on it. I hope I'm wrong and people are hard at work trying to figure this out, otherwise we might be screwed.

I just wish Rockstar would stop ignoring this issue, the problem is annoying enough, they're making the whole situation insulting.

I tried it with 16 GB USB stick, except I didn't put the disc 2 on the HDD.

Did you try that or anything else before coming up with your fix? Were you driving at full speed through crowded areas while in the game?

I might try your fix depending on your answers, I'm a bit burned out on troubleshooting attempts at the moment.

Yes! All the driving, all the crowd, inside buildings, some missions, day and night transitions, switching characters. I got froze while walking and turning 360 degress too fast though... But anyway, Install disc 1 to 32 gb usb drive, when asked to put disc 2 give it the finger and exit to dash, then install disc 2 to HDD and play. Don't forget to save to the cloud, as saving in the usb or the HDD seems to ruin the game. This worked for me, so try it and tell me how it go

So the game did end up freezing then? I see.

I will try and let you know as soon as I get home.

Hey whats up bros, been reading since page 1.. I too have an old refurbished 20gb and have been experiencing the whole "unreadable disc" and freezing during franklins first mission and some other random parts of the game.. I got gta 5 at midnight release and played from like one until six in the morning fine..the next day the events of freezing and unreadable disc started

Failed attempts: re-installing disc 1, getting a new disc, doing the clearing cache numerous times b4 playing, downloading disc 1 to 16gb usb, n im sure a few others

I am going to try out: download disc 1 to usb, download disc 2 to HDD, and save game files on cloud saves (what rireinc suggested)

If above does not work, i.e. freezing, unreadable disc,, I will try the same things stated above but save disc 2 to usb instead of HDD

will post results.

It's been posted in the thread already actually, I tried it and it failed to stop the freezing. Thanks anyway though, I'm sure this may help some people.

In other news, I hurrily set up a twitter account and sent a tweet to @RockstarSupport, it reads as follows:

"@RockstarSupport Random GTA V freezing on my 2005 Xbox 360. Same thing with working discs from friends. 360 is perfect otherwise. What now?"

I'm not hoping for any miraculous response at this point, just trying to make Rockstar aware that this issue cannot just be swept under the rug. If you haven't already done it, you should think about it, it's maybe our most effective way of being heard. I will report back if they reply.

I’ve been looking at this whole thread since the start. I have seen most people say that their 2008 Model Xbox 360 is been fixed for RROD? Mine has been fixed for RROD about 3 years ago and won’t run GTA V longer than 20 mins. I’ve tried everything yins have listed and I think RockStar is RIGHT! We do have defective Xbox’s. Who the hell knows what Xbox replaced our parts with? Maybe we need to start complaining to XBOX?!

I have a 2005 Xenon XBox 360 that didn't have a RROD and I still have the freezing issue. Furthermore, given that every other game runs perfectly fine on the so-called defective consoles, I think it's a little unfair to blame it all on Microsoft when GTA5 is the odd one out. Whether or not the problem is patchable, Rockstar needs to address the fact that they made a game that doesn't work on every console despite the box saying so, even though every other developer manages to do it.

It is not acceptable, it's false marketing and it's a serious offense.

Stuff like this makes me feel for you guys. I have read through a lot of the threads here and the problems with the game. I would be majorly pissed too. But like someone said i doubt anything will happen. Maybe in game update or dlc they will patch things because it does seem like the minority have the problem. About 30 of my mates bought the game at midnight here in the uk and NOBODY has problems with it.

Quick question is anybody in this thread british and having problems?

Just made an account to comment here. My story is a little different.

Yesterday my roommate got the game and after the install I was able to play his for about 5 hours with no problems. Bought the game today and popped it in and it said it was unreadable from the start. I have a white 360 (60gb) with an hdmi port on it.

Things I've tried:

My disc in his 360 (slim version)...it tried reading it but then just ejected the disc.

His copy in my xbox...same thing happens as my copy...doesn't load and says unreadable.

Clearing cache.

720p

Moved to cloud storage

Deleted the blimp dlc

No connection to xbox live

All of these have not worked.

I've got a 2006/7 (i cant remember when i bought it) 20gb fat 360 with no HDMI and after buying the game, had a good couple of hours first session, then the next day onwards was getting the freezing every 20-30 minutes or so.

I tried most of the other stuff on this thread to no avail, so this morning i moved my save games on to the cloud, reformatted the hdd, redownloaded my gamertag, reinstalled gta v (install disk only), and its been running smoothly ever since (about 4 hours continuously).

Not sure how long this will work in the long term, and it does mean wiping your xbox, but you can always back things up, and in my opinion its worth it if it means you can play the game you just spent good money on.

Wanted to chime back in and say i was about to bite the bullet and buy a cheap 360 slim off of craigslist when i remembered that I have 2 360's (one for me, one for my SO). And I am NOT experiencing the freezing issue with hers after playing for several hours.

My 360 (The one that was freezing)

RROD Console Refurb Service Date of 2009/05/17

Her 360(The one that works)

Manufacturer Date of 2007-08-11 (Never Refurbed)

Been following this even though my copy was fine

but since yesterday.. I suddenly freeze to.. A different freeze though, the screen just blacks out whenever the story mode is loading.

It then goes back to the rockstar intro screen, and re-loops this process over and over.

I checked my disc and there is this huge circular scratch on it.. and I didn't even move my console.

So I'm properly f*cked.. I'm going to buy another brand new copy later today caus this game is just to good to wait for a fix or refund.

I hope it was the disc, and not any HD issue.. caus right before it all happend, I got an error on GTA about the storage device.

Fingers crossed, will get back with results.

Ive tried all of these methods. But i only ever manage to get 20-40 mins of gameplay before a freeze.

Ive managed to get uo to trevors first mision, which can be lenghty, but the game freezez before I get to finish it. I feel like crying.

took the money I saved for xbox one, and bought a brand new 250gb 360, was only $250 on amazon...as you would expect the game is now working like a charm, no issues whatsoever, no freezes at all, after hours and hours of gameplay.

This game does not work on older machines, plain and simple, dont let anyone tell you otherwise, they need to issue a patch.

for all those debating getting new next gen, the way i see it, now i have a reliable xbox for the next 2 years, I will wait for the next gen machines to work out their kinks and issues, plus i saved close to $300 buying a 360 instead of xbox one

I too just joined so I could post about my problems. I have the same problem as everyone else.. 2007/2008 Xbox 360 (don't remember which one). It got RROD I sent it to microsoft and they send me an xbox back. I freeze within the first 5 minutes of the game. I havent been able to get passed the first opening bank robbery. I once got to franklins mission but there is no save point until you get to simeon I assume.. I openened up my xbox dusted the several pounds of dust and still.. That did not help at all..

Any word on a date for a patch.. I hope its this weekend

Just looked my console and its a Xenon but having the RROD numerous times and refurbished by Microsoft I assume its now an Opus? Anyway it's besides the point - I've managed to get to the choice of playing as either Franklin or Michael and I'm usually able to get my longest gaming time of about 15 mins when my Xbox has been off for a while. This indeed happened again but once I try to play again the freeze happens within about 2 mins I'd say. In response to another poster earlier in this thread I live in Ireland too and its the most frustrating thing watching every single friend on your list playing the game without problem. Really hope theres a patch or something to sort this because I'm not in the enviable position to just go out and buy a new 360 just for one game when all my other games work perfect.

Just stumbled on this thread and didn't realise this was still happening to games on the old Xbox 360.

The question that should also be asked is if there are any old Xbox 360 owners who dont have any freezing issues? If there are then this is a hardware issue and not software.

Keeps freezing for me too, no-hdmi old 2006 xbox. All games work fine except for gta v (even games that run on the same engine; red dead redemption, gta iv, max payne 3 etc). Tried everything that is mentioned in this thread with no luck. Even tried the same cd at a friend's house, worked just fine. So it must be my Xbox + gta V. Right now I'm stuck on the second mission, keeps on freezing after 5-10 minutes.

Paid 60 bucks for a game that aint working whatsoever. Hope r* releases a fix of some sort soon, because this seems to be a quite common problem.

Also: It doesn't seem to be a problem with the cd drive. I installed the disc 1 AND 2 on hdd/usb (tried both), and still froze after a few minutes of gameplay. 100% unplayable, while all other games work fine.

Add me to the list....

Older 360, rrod refurb in early 2008

Everything installed fine, no hang ups, but the first feeze was right before you walk in and deal with the hostages. I literally took 2 steps, and froze.

I haven't even been able to get far enough to save my game, so I have to start completely over every single friggin time. I stopped counting at 10 freezes and gave up about an hour after that. I haven't been this pissed off in a long time. I swapped out GTA for Skyrim, played for at least an hour with no problems, back to GTA and frozen within minutes. I had an E71 error code when I first fired up the 360 last night, so I thought my xbox was ready to crap out, but after popping the had drive off, turning on, put the HD back on, everything (everything BUT GTA) works fine. Not sure if my xbox was already on it's last legs or not.

On a side note, I dont know much about newer 360s. Can you transfer game data from 1 HD to another? Can you use an old 20 gig HD with a new 360? I don't wanna lose my game data from all my other games if I do end up buying a new 360.

Well guys, here's my update....

Tried everything suggested in this thread, nothing worked. Until I picked up a new 360 yesterday. Same GTA discs I was using before, played all night last night (at least 4ish hours straight) and not a single problem. Didn't freeze one single time. I made it farther in 20 minutes than I did in 3 hours the night before. Def. looks like an issue with the older boxes. I picked up the 4GB slim 360 (didn't wanna spend too much money) and a new flash drive, installed disc 1 to the flash drive, did NOT install disc 2 (I wanted to follow rockstars instructions to see if it worked before I installed the play disc anywhere). At least I have 15 days to return the 360 if another solution is found. And now, in hindsight, for what I spent on the 360 and flash drive, I should have just got the 250GB 360. *duh* I was in a panic/rage/frenzy/fury and had to do something before the weekend, and my logic went right out the window.

Another here who is having the same issue, joined just to contribute.

Something I haven't seen in this thread is anyone trying to play another game. I finally said F*** this and went back to Black Ops 2, which I have played for countless hours without a single problem. Now, even after uninstalling everything to do with GTA and re-installing BO2 to the HDD, BO2 is freezing!

Has anyone else gone back to a previous game that was working on their system and had problems?

20GB Halo 3 Edition Xbox with HDMI... if that even matters at this point

A few people have said they tried other games. I mentioned that I popped in Skyrim (which has froze up less than 5 times EVER over MONTHS of playing) and Skyrim was fine for about an hour before I switched back to GTA, froze within minutes.

Sooo mine froze at the "loading story mode" screen, but also scratched my disc

I just got it repaired at the game store and guess what, works perfectly

So I guess my freeze problem was just the disc, and not my console

I sincerely hope you guys get it fixed, caus it really bummed me out too.

I got RROD on my 20GB non HDMI xbox back a few years, and when i got a refurbished one in return from microsoft I went to a friend so he could mod my xbox he told me couldnt because microsoft had changed something with the disc reader or disc tray...something like that. Maybe that is the common problem.

I don't think it has anything to do with the disc reader or disc tray, because I eventually installed both disc 1 and 2 on hdd/usb and it still froze after 10 mins of gameplay. The rest of your story (RROD -> refurbished console) is the same as mine though.
