Xbox 360 - Game Keeps Freezing on Franklin's 1st Mission

Xbox 360 owner.

I had no issues installing disc 1 onto the HD.

No issues playing through the introductory mission.

No issues of cut scene transition between Michael and Franklin

Once the driving portion of Franklin's 1st mission start, the game randomly freezes forcing me to reboot the Xbox. There is no precursor for the game locking up; it appears to happen completely randomly and at different times during the mission. It has locked up on me early in the mission when Franklin's buddy calls up on the cell phone just after the driving starts. It has locked up during the second portion of the driving mission when the cops are chasing.

I'm not sure what to do.

I'm going to attempt to install the "Play" disk onto the Xbox Hard Drive and see if this will fix the freezing issue.

I understand that this may diminish the appearance of the game, but I figure this would be better than having a non playable game.

I'll report back

Installing the "Play" disk did not work. The game froze again, right when the cops started to give chase.

I guess I'll delete the current disk installs on the Xbox Hard Drive and do a new clean install of disk 1 (Install disk).

I'll report back

The following are the steps I've take since my last post:

I deleted all installed content of GTA V on the Xbox 360 Hard Drive.

I cleared the Xbox 360 system cache.

I installed disk 1 (install disk) and proceeded with disk 2 when prompted.

The game now froze during the driving portion of the introductory mission. I'm a little frustrated at this point and I'm going to just not worry about it for the remainder of the night.

Unless there are any new suggestions or if R* announces that they F-ed up something and they are going to release a patch, my next step is to see if I can swap the disks from where I purchased the game. I'll do a fresh install and attempt again with the new disks. I'll report back at that time.

I recommend installing DVD 2 (Play ) on pendrive. I'm using Goodram 16gb 2.0 stick with read 20mb/s+ and games run smooth as butter so it might help with freezing problem.

Has anyone with freezing/game lockup issues as described in this thread resolved this by installing the 2nd game disk onto a 16gb thumb drive as HanPL recommends?

I don't have a thumb drive big enough to install the "play" disk onto. I can easily pick one up tomorrow, but not sure if this will actually resolve the freezing issue. Just curious if anyone has any additional feedback.

Thanks

Having the same problem with freezing. All I want to do is walk around a bit but I can't even get through Franklin's first mission. Out of curiosity, is anyone with freezing problems using an older console?

This is really bumming me out. I have tried everything I can think of. I even exchanged for a new copy. No matter what, somewhere within the first 15 minutes the game freezes. I am a sad panda.

My current Xbox console isn't my original one, but the one that Microsoft provided when my first one died due to Red Ring. It is an early generation version; it has no HDMI port.

I'm relieved to see this isn't just me. Repeated freezes during missions. 2008 Xbox with 20Gb hard drive. That said, it's *never* given me any problems or freezes in other similar titles previously (and GTA IV worked like a dream). I've tried the USB stick option as I assumed the HDD was the problem. Transferred Disc 1 install files and disconnected the HDD. Same problem arose. This is a major downer as it renders the game largely unplayable (I've tried doing the same mission 8 times now).

Hoping that Rockstar addresses this. It's not like I'm going to buy a new 360 with ONE just round the corner.

This is the same exact problem occurring on my Xbox 360. During Franklin's first mission it randomly freezes, not a specific point, but it happens every time! I've been doing some research and can't seem to find any fix that actually works. Rockstar has yet to reply to my "Support Ticket" so I'm stuck trying everything I can think of. I've probably reinstalled the game about 10 times now. I haven't tried installing it on a USB yet people have been saying that didn't even fix the problem so I don't think it's worth the money to guy buy one and do it myself. I'm thinking it might be my 20GB HDD? After I installed the game I probably a couple hundred MB left. Could it possibly be a problem that I don't have enough excess memory after the install?

I've tried not using the 20gb HDD and using my own external hard drive which ive used for plenty of other games including max payne 3, but still freezes. Ive deleted a number of games on demand of my hard drive to make room but still no look, just ended with a number of hours to re download them games in future

ive tried not using the 20gn HDD and using my own external hard drive but no luck, ive used this drive for many games on demand including max payne 3 and all ran smoothly. i feel it could be the model of xbox, hopefully something rockstar can patch as im not looking to buy a new xbox just for one game

gonna try dropping the resolution to 720, seems like a graphical problem, might be a temp fix, ill get back to you and see how it goes

I've got a nasty feeling that this is going to be an issue with the older consoles... No sign of anyone with a newer version having this problem.

Have a 360 20gb with no hdmi port.

Freezing like crazy.

Went and bought a 16gb thumbdrive.

So far I've tried: (besides what you're supposed to do..Install disc 1 to hard drive, use disc 2 for playing (dont install).

Disc 1 (install) Disc 2 (play)

First thing:

Disc 1 installed to HDD

Disc 2 installed to USB

---Freeze.

I had read to try something similar but do different method.

Second thing:

Leave Disc 2 on USB

Delete Disc 1 from HDD and everything to do with GTAV

Reinstall Disc 1 to HDD

Restart console and Clear Cache

Put Disc 2 back in (its installed on USB fyi)

----Freeze.

Third thing: (have not tried this, in the process)

Delete everything on both HDD and USB / Clear Cache

Install Disc 1 to USB

Disc 2 normal (not install just put in drive)

---Will post results soon.
