Getting a Terrible Resolution

Question

Jimmy7685

My game looks BAD. ive made sure 480 720 1080i and 1080p resolutions are enabled on my playstation 3 but the game still looks so aliased and ugly, anything farther than a few car lengths ahead has REALLY jagged edges. I can hardly play it, so maddening. Is this game just ugly ?

edit: also I AM using HDMI on a 1080p capable PC Monitor

Yeah I got even better image using HDMI cable and selecting ISF mode. Separate settings for vertical and horizontal sharpness and set the edge enhancer to low.

It seems that lots of us are having the same problem, but I cannot work out what the connecting issue is?

Some of us are playing on PS3, some on Xbox. Some of us have LED TV's, some of us have LCD. We're from many different countries. Very odd.

I will try uninstalling and reinstalling. Probably won't make any difference at all.

Well I seem to have fixed the problem for myself. I really went to town on my TV settings and reduced the brightness, sharpness and color settings by quite a long way and now the game looks really nice. All of the flickering and lines have gone.

I know it's a major pain in the ass but it's worth really messing with your TV settings.

Same problem here, bad graphics and I don't know why.. I have a good TV with optimized settings for gaming so theres no problem related with the tv. The game has the issues

That means nothing, ALL of the tvs i have have "gaming" settings. They just make it look worse. read through the thread look at the screenies. Lot of people have tried a lot of solutions.

I have a top spec LED 3d tv and the game looks complete sh*t on it. But with my crappy old LG LCD it looks great.

You havent read the thread. many people have changed disc. Used their discs in friends xbox that look fine and their disc was fine. They use their friends in their box and it still looks crappy.l. There seems to be a hardware problem somewhere. But with so many factors its going to be nigh on impossible to sort.

Substitute xbox for ps3. Same carry on. But yeah there is definately something strange. There has to be a reason that some consoles, ps3 and xboxs, are perfect and others look like crap.

Wish i could get my hands on a PS3 copy to see if there is any difference.

An alternative way is Rockstar to make a patch or something to see if it fixes it.. lag problem, graphics and so on

Only issue with that is that not everybody are having problems. Maybe they put a silent update when the online goes live to try and help with the issues. But thats the thing. will the recieve enough complaints n tickets to justify a patch. If the numbers arent there to justify a patch. I doubt you will get one.

I feel for you guys as its an amazing game. Nobody i know ( real friends ) have a problem with the game. Its a real shame.

Honestly guys, I don't think it has anything to do with TV/monitor.

My friend and I have the exact same monitors (acer 27'') and his game is working flawlessly and mine looks like butt. Both PS3 version, both standard physical copies. He's in Florida, got it from Amazon, I'm in California, got it from Gamestop.

I have 3 identical asus 23" 120hz 3d monitors that i use for nvidiq surround vision on my desktop. All bought from same place at same time. But they need different settings ( colour gamma etc ) so they look the same when on.

Even the same set can be different visually due to enviormental factors like humidity etc.

My honest opinion is that the combination of factors is the cause , hence why people have no problem. Some are slight problems and others are abismal.

If it was bad coding everybody would have the problem. Hardware problems? well then people with certain versions of xbox would have the problem, but it seems that people with all versions ( xenon, jasper and the new slim ) have the problem. Same with ps3. there is no specific area which can be pinpointed.

Bad batch of games? then why is it happening to people all over the world.

Rockstar have to at least admit there are problems with some users and not just leave you guys to their deplorable customer services.

Bad graphics like this are caused by a 720p game (with no antialiasing) running at 1080p. It's still not going to look perfect even on the native 720p because of the anti aliasing.

I just lowered my sharpness to 0 and it does look a little better.

Registered to join in with the people complaining about resolution; It really does look like a PS2 game in some instances and also IV. Coming from Max Payne 3, the way this game looks is seriously pathetic and I hope they patch whatever is causing this because it's not the TV. It really kills getting into the game.

TV is a Samsung UN55C6800 55-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LED HDTV

Platform is Xbox 360

Pre-ordered from Amazon

I played the game on my 42" Samsung LED, very noticeable aliasing throughout the game.. Switched to my 22" TV, honestly, I love the game now. barely noticeable. Been playing the whole day! Its the game made like that due to old hardware is my best guess. Low resolution screen is what you need to play a low resolution game. Will post images tomorrow hopefully.

Has anybody traded with a friend who has a "better looking copy" of the game to see if it looks better or the same in their machine? I feel like that would give us a real conclusion.

I was really annoyed with this problem, strained my eyes like crazy, looked really bad on my 21.5 asus monitor and my 32 inch samsung tv which is LED btw, however I tried my game with my parents tv 50 inch samsung plasma and it looks good now wtf?

Make sure you are using HDMI... then go to display settings on ps3 and restart the display setup, make sure 720p or 1080i, not p, is enabled. i think people using 1080p have more jagged lines, 1080i looks amazing on the TV im playing on... I rarely see jagged edges, only on trees in distance etc but not on cars at all.

and the reason rockstar did this is because if they put AA on then you can expect the game to crash/lag all the time

Fixed my jaggies on the Xbox 360. All I did was set the display setting on the Xbox 360 to 1360x768 which is my TV's native resolution. Make sure you have the HDMI Black Level to Expanded or else the colors will look dull or grayish.

P.S I also removed all my TV enhancements and turned on Game Mode.

Edit: BTW it will still have jaggies because of the lack of anti-aliasing but hallelujah now I don't have to be blinded by deformed lines.

hi all, i am still having the issue and only using componant but i got this email back from Rockstar today and wondered if it would help anyone out:

Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rockstar Support.

We're sorry to hear that you're having issues with GTA V on Xbox 360. Below you will find some Console Troubleshooting steps which may help resolve the issue.

Before troubleshooting, please check the following:

  • a. Turn the console off and on.
  • b. Unplug all power cords and accessories, and then plug them back in firmly. Make sure all connections are secure.
  • c. Update your console software.

1.) Clearing Game Cache:
To clear the Xbox 360 cache select Settings==>System==> Storage ==> then highlight the HDD, press Y for Device Options… and then simply select “Clear System Cache”. Select Yes when prompted to perform Hard Drive Maintenance.
* = Deleting the cache will remove temporary game files and updates. Saved games, profiles, DLC etc will NOT be removed.

**Please note, if the game freezes during installation, please check the following article:
http://support.rockstargames.com/hc/en-us/articles/200195537-Freezing-during-GTA-V-installation-

2.) Clear the Game Cache.
Clearing the Game Cache on the Xbox 360 is a separate function from clearing the System Cache. In order to do so, you must hold the LEFT Bumper, RIGHT Bumper, and the X button all at the same time on the Xbox 360 controller as a game is launching. Once you reach the Main Menu or Title Screen of the game, you can let go of the buttons. There will be no notification to you that this process has completed because it is all done passively.
Clearing the Game Cache resolves many problems in games that rely heavily on the Xbox 360's cached memory. Some of these problems include, but are not limited to NPC issues, random textures, and "hitching", "lagging", or "slow gameplay".

3.) Disconnect your Xbox from the internet.
We have gotten reports that some players have been able to resolve their issues by disconnecting their console from the internet. It is possible that some freezes are related to some recent server outages that should be resolved shortly. If issues persist, disabling all internet connections on your console should prevent the game from attempting to access the servers. Obviously this is not ideal, but testing this should work at least for troubleshooting purposes, and should be resolved quickly.

4.) Clear save files.
Some crashes can be related to corrupted save data, especially crashes at a specific spot, or crashes on launch. The next step would be to isolate the save files, and see if launching without them remedies the issue. There are several ways of doing this:

  • a. Deleting all files in the Games and Apps folder related to GTA V. Select Settings==>System==> Storage ==> then highlight the HDD, press A, then select Games and Apps==>Grand Theft Auto V. Delete all files in this directory. Note: This method will result in permanent loss of data. If the game crashed the first time it launched, no valuable information is stored in here, so they may be deleted freely. If you already played the game for many hours, you may want to consider trying another method.
  • b. Backing up all files in the save directory to an external device before deleting all files as described above.
  • c. Possibly the simplest method, and one that also might isolate other potential issues would be to test the game from a brand new Xbox Live Gamertag. The save files for 360 games are tied to a specific user. Launching from a new user should cause the game to pull from a brand new pool of files.

5.) Test the game on a second console.

This last step is potentially the trickiest step, depending on alternate hardware availability, but probably the most important step for determining the cause of major issues on any console. That step would be to test the disc on a separate console. If you have a friend or family member with an Xbox 360, we strongly recommend installing the game on their console, and see if issues persist.

6.) Test the game when installed on a second hard drive.
Because GTA V is so reliant on install data, and utilizes the hard drive so heavily, it may also be worth attempting to install on a different drive, and see if that helps. If you were previously installing on internal storage, installing to a freshly formatted 16GB Flash drive may help improve performance. More information on installation can be found at the following:

http://support.rockstargames.com/hc/en-us/articles/200155686-Grand-Theft-Auto-V-Xbox-360-and-PS3-Installation-Requirements

If you continue to have issues, please let us know the following:

  • The model of your Xbox 360
  • The size of your hard drive, How large is it, and is the game installed to an internal HDD or Flash Drive?
  • How much free space is available on your HDD after installation.
  • The contents of any error code, if applicable. If possible, please submit a screen shot of any error messages, or give the precise wording of the error.

Once we receive this information, we will continue to investigate. Thank you and have a wonderful day!

Update your software??? what a load of balls. If your console isnt up to date when you insert the disc it tells you to update before you play. If you dont update, you cant play! simple.

Rockstars customer service has a lot to answer for.

Running disk 2 from my usb improved my pop in dramatically but has made no difference whatsoever to the jaggedness during daytime.

I'm all ears to solutions for this, got my tv sharpness all the way down to 0 but it's still quite bad

So i have been investigating this "issue" for a few days now and have reached my own conclusion.

My game looked like crap on my 24 inch monitor and no settings changed it.

I installed the game on my friends ancient 60 gig ps3 and hooked it up to my 32 inch tv downstairs and it still looked like crap.

Tried component cables, vga cable, 2xhdmi cables, formatted drive none of which made any difference.

Another friend at work had the game and said his looked great his words were "it looks next gen to me" so i finally went round yesterday and to my amazement the game looked like crap.

I said to him "well what about all those jaggies and the blurred mess in the distance" "ah doesnt really look that bad to me" he said.

He has some uber new 3d tv that can fly you to the moon if you want.

So i have concluded that the game just doesnt look that great the lack of AA plus the low frame rate just kills it for some where as others dont notice it that much.

So i dont think there is any magic TV setting that is gonna give you 8xAA or something.

I have shelved the game and will wait for a PC or next gen release.

To be clear i think it is a great game and im not bithchin about graphics i just cant play it as it is.

Jackal.

Nah seriously I don't think all these people are making this up. There is something wrong with specific areas of this game, but it's not affecting everyone. Whether it be disk, tv or console related there is a problem affecting a small minority. PC gamers can please just stop going on already.
