The issue with driving/damage is not the handling. It's that GTA:V

Seriously, Pookie, thanks so much for this thread, glad to see that it's a place where those of us who dislike the driving can voice our complaints. I see more and more people on our side everyday...can't wait for the game to come out, sh*t's gonna get real.

Are the cars really that hard to destroy though?

I haven't played the game but i heard that most of the cars people showed had been upgraded.

Just looking for an answer.

I would estimate car health is 300-400% increased over GTA:4.

Correct!

Played GTA V myself and I tried to f*ck up a car as much as possible.

- In GTA IV: After 4-6 head-on collisions with a wall/car, the engine would start letting out black smoking indicating it's about to blow up or stop working.

- In GTA V. After 4-6 head-on collisions with a wall/car, the engine DIDN'T start letting anything out and it worked perfectly fine afterwards. Event after 10-15 head-on collisions, no sign of it being ready to blow up or stop working.

Weird, I have hit plenty of walls and cars head on and have come across several problems with my tires not rotating properly (getting caught on the body or being bent), engine giving me problems after heavy crashes, I actually lose speed as my car was losing health, and the frame of the car doesn't move into my lap on a head on.

The structural integrity of the cars is much stronger, almost impossible to break actually. But the bumpers, wheels, lights, hood, all that can be smashed up. Light wrecks do no actual damage and instead just scratch the paint. Heavy wrecks will often leave you with the bumper swaying (which reduces speed) hanging on by one side, the hood lifted up (more slowing), and sometimes your tires will be damaged if you hit them. After one wreck in IV your front end was usually more than 1/2 its original size, so where di it all go? Just compress? The damage is more realistic in V than in IV. And where are you kids getting that the car damage has no effect on car performance? Lol, ever since the first second I played I have noticed this....

10-15 HEAD ON COLLISIONS? And the car was running fine? Lol, yeah you are just full of sh*t.

If I'm hearing you correctly, you state damage is more realistic in GTA:V than in GTA:4.

I can only respectfully and entirely disagree.

What?

Are you kidding me?

Look I ain't saying V's damage is great, but LOL. The fact you claim that when you hit a car and your front end is now a whopping 4 inches long, as you are speeding down the highway at over 100 MPH....

You gotta be kidding me right?

You do realize that in order for an engine to be running and working, it has to be in the shape it was before, at the very least.

OP, I'd love to hear your thoughts on this:

Basically what I've picked up from what your saying is that the driving/collisions should be realistic because health etc is correct.

If that is your point, then you cant sit here and complain about that, and not complain about EVERY single other unrealistic thing in the game. Its so hypocritical... Your just using that to back up your opinion on one thing. If the game had a feature where every road in the the city was backed up 6 lights, would you be happy then?

Did you read the original post? This is not a post to complain. This is a post to explain the logic behind those who take issue with the physics.

I'm not asking for hyper-realism. What I'm asking for is consistency. If gunplay is realistic, why is driving straight out of Midnight Club? Why are there no fatalities in NHL 14? Why does Mortal Kombat not have one-hit KOs?

It's about consistency. It breaks the immersion if you die from a few bullets, then respawn and enter a car, only to find that you're largely invincible from anything the cops throw at you. The discrepancy and balancing here is the issue, and only that.

I will restate this again: I don't care if the game focuses on realistic or arcade gameplay. I just don't want there to be completely different, immersion-breaking gameplay changes made in the middle of a mission.

I get that, but if that is the route your going, then you must argue about the wanted system, Its suuuuuper unrealistic.. if you want consistency, then you have to go all the way. You cant sit here saying that, then ignore that there isnt a nationwide man hunt for you after you kill a few people in cold blood.

And fatalities in nhl hah, I know the new hitting is absolute garbage, and over the top, but fatalities haha.

do you see my point?

Weren't people saying gta iv failed, because it was too realistic? We will always find something to bitch about. Therefore we are all a bitch and we suck.

It was not because it was too realistic, it was because the optimization sucks as hell, and lack of good map / features. But GTA IV physics are good.

Is it really realistic to be sliding around all over the place if you apply the brakes at like 5mph though?

stee_vo, I believe GTA4 physics needed work. Not debating that.

The issue is that GTAV takes GTA4 physics and kicks them to the curb. They did not attempt to improve them, they overhauled the system and went in the exact opposite direction: everything from damage, to health, to handling. Everything involving driving.

And this new system is a complete juxtaposition against the on-foot gameplay. You *die* within a few shots on foot. Not injury. Death.

In a car, you can last as long as you want. Just keep holding the accelerator. You won't die from losing your car to a flip, and your car won't be easily destroyed no matter if you get in the worst possible crashes.

From now on they can shoot you when you're in the car too. You'll die when you get shot on the head. And thats what happens in car, im pretty sure same happens on foot too. Head is the biggest target of instant shoot.

I'd much rather have that than get into a head-on collision with a wall going 45 mph and it leaves zero damage, or flip my car from a stunt jump (literally landing on the roof) without a single scratch left.

Want to see what happens when a car hits a wall at 40 mph?

And there are no cool activities... Where's the drug dealing? Casinos? Gang wars?

No one cares because we have Yoga

Yoga sucks,

I knew Rockstar would take sh*t out just to add Yoga, TV shows, and movies. Those don't add to ingame as much as a Casino does or gang wars/Drug dealing.

I'm still not disappointed with this game. It still is a better GTA then IV was. Maybe not as good as SA.

I get the feeling that Rockstar are trying to please everyone, which rarely works out in any case. You can't please everyone all of the time.

The former people are compeltely different from the latter people.

The ones who hated IV's driving like V's driving. The one's who liked IV's driving hate V's driving, for some reason everyone thinks otherwise.

Im waiting for day 1 update. Not sure if there will be any. The way the car is really hard to shoot til explode is just ridiculous. Getting at the top of the mountains with a bike too.

With all the driving complaints, what would be the possibility that they go back and patch the car physics?

Not really because its just a small minority complaining, other places like reddit and dare I say neogaf don't give a damn about this

I have no problem with driving, kinda reminds me of GTA SA ,which is great. I dont think GTA 4's driving in GTA V's map would be making any difference. Problem with GTA 4 was the bouncing of cars handling, it wasnt much enjoyable, however, turning and braking was kinda realistic, but in terms of everything overall, driving wasnt realistic at all.

Rockstar San Diego(MCLA devs) developed the handling and the car damage

Rockstar North developed the rest

Source? Sounds intresting... could be right.

Well which one should Rockstar use? Should they implement both driving styles to satisfy everyone? Maybe GTA V is like that but I've not played it yet so I don't know.

Certainly feels hostile enough to be a war considering the amount of hate someone receives for merely posting a mature critique of the game.

I saw a video of some bearded guy trying to smash a car in GTA 5 with hard collisions almost non-stop. The video was 8 minutes and as I recall the police actually killed him and the car was left undestroyed. He was smashing it into cars, poles, and was shooting the engine. The cars are tanks. Imagine how much of a tank the tank will be. Tank in GTA Online = gameover.

from what I've seen from the driving has looked like IV but they fixed things should have been addressed like boat like handling and the griping.

The one thing they should fix is to make vehicles more damageable.

do you see my point?

Straw man and snowballing fallacies.

If you kill someone in GTAV, the theory is that if the cops don't see you do it and there are no witness, you won't get caught. This works sometimes, sometimes it doesn't.

If you do kill multiple people, the police will try to hunt you down. And they follow you across the map in choppers, tanks and boats. So yes, it's pretty much a manhunt.

But that's where it stops. You can lose the cops by hiding. Sometimes there are glitches. But the police are consistently in the middle ground of "fun" and "realistic." I'm okay with that, because any more realism would detract from the fun.

Now if Rockstar advertised police in GTAV as the most realistic ever, I'd probably call shenanigans. But they didn't, and the police presence has largely been unchanged since GTA:III. They still attack, they still do stupid things. It's, at least, consistent. Maybe consistently underwhelming and stupid, but consistent.

Now imagine if the police had hoverboots and jetpacks. Would be sort of strange and out of place, right? That's the difference.

I actually tried damaging a sports car in TBOGT today and that was hard to get on fire as well, yet I managed to get a taxi on fire within a minute. Maybe the amount of damage varies with each vehicle, hence the use of vehicle armor also.

GTA IV had average driving. Jesus, it's like everyone just started playing GTA from IV and now they're experts on what Rockstar actually wanted to do. I haven't played the game but, from what I've seen I can't wait to get my hands on this and get into a car, flip it over on its hood and then flip it back on its wheels, just like San Andreas. Seriously, has everyone forgotten you can customize the suspension? There's probably the option to have a car drive similar to IV but, nope let's not even fathom that thought and jump straight to conclusion that the driving will for now and always just be complete sh*t!(SARCASM)

Thanks for the support so far guys, but this isn't meant to be a topic where everyone agrees.

I am open to debate on this issue. And to me, it's an issue. Though some people disliked GTA4's attempt at "realism," you cannot deny they at least stayed consistent in their attempt.

GTA5, from what I've played, watched and read, is very confused. It wants to be hyper-realistic, then changes its mind entirely.

Well in that case... :p

I don't agree with you, the game is set out to be fun and challenging that is why some aspects are more forgiving then others. I haven't played the game myself so it's hard to judge but I got glued to my monitor while watching a leaked gameplay video just because the game looks sooo entertaining and in the end that is the goal of video games.

So people want cars that have turning circles of on oil tanker? Bikes that skid around corners at 30mph?

I suspect this game is about speed and getting from A to B over a large map as fast as possible.

... has an identity crisis.

I am going to preface this by asking readers to please read entirely and, if you choose to respond, please do so by putting your "big boy" pants on.

There are tons of topics out there complaining about driving physics, car damage, etc. This is not one of them. This is merely a means to convey the issue at hand from a proper perspective.

The issue here is not so much the physics in my mind; rather, it's the fact GTA is inconsistent in how it handles the world in general.

Your health is low (realistic).

NPC health is low and can be KO'd by a single punch or knife strike (realistic).

Running speed is slow (realistic).

Biking speed is slow (realistic).

The slightest mistake on foot means death.

And now, we transition to cars:

Car health is incredibly high and you are basically invincible while moving.

Car damage takes forever to develop.

Cars cannot be permanently flipped (you can easily flip them back).

Cars are basically glued to the ground.

No matter if you like/dislike the driving in this game, you have to admit there's a disparity here. The transition from realistic to arcade is instant. And that, to some people, is problematic.

Consistency is the answer. I don't believe anyone who has played Saints Row 4 would be complaining about unrealistic physics, because the game is entirely unrealistic. However, this is not the case in GTA:V.

One moment, you die from taking 3 or 4 bullets from police on foot. The next, you're being chased for half an hour because police can't stop your car no matter their best efforts.

One moment, you die from being clipped by a car going 20 mph. The next, you're doing 90 degree turns in an SUV going full speed.

I urge everyone to think about this situation from this perspective. If the game was entirely unrealistic, I don't believe as many people would be complaining. But the game is filled with attempts at being realistic -- heck, look at the activity choices: Tennis, golf, yoga ... etc.

But then, you are taken from that "realistic" mindset and thrown into a completely unrealistic set of circumstances with no real reasoning as to why. It's as though on-foot gameplay and activities were developed by an entirely different studio than the driving mechanics.

This post is sooo true! I couldn't have put it better myself, and I seriously hope Rockstar sees this post. Or even better - please Mouthoff this post to Rockstar!

These are necessary changes. going to spend a ton of money customizing vehicles and buying them just for them to get destroyed the second you tap someone.
