Which language should I play V on?

Hey there guys, I hope you can help a fellow bro out. I'm from Germany thus meaning I'm by far not a native englisch speaker.

Though I would say I'm quite good at speaking and understanding the language, some leaks have concerened me wether I should play the game in German or Englisch. I really want to experience the game how it was supposed to be (Englisch) but on the other hand I want to get every joke, every refference, etc (German). The reason why I'm asking is because I sometimes had trouble understanding e.g. Lamar. Thanks!

lamar's very funny with good dialogue from what i've seen. can't you play in english with german subs just in case you don't get it?

Definitely play it in English, man. A lot of things are bound to get lost in translation. Use subtitles if you have a hard time hearing what's being said.

Good idea, hope that's possible although I'm not sure if you can play the game multilingual

This. And here's to hoping R* got some competent German translators for the subs. Because some dutch subs (on TV, not on GTA... GTA has no Dutch subs I think, and I read the english subs anyway) are horribly translations from english, here in Belgium... Not every english joke like language jokes can be translated, let alone the au courant jokes in english.

Would it help if you listened to it in English but read subtitles in German?

 

I love kung fu theater. My favorite films though are in the native language and english subtitles.

I can recommend Ong Bak 3 if someone needs a hold over until Tuesday.

Well, you don't really have a choice.... the voice acting is ONLY in English!

You can, however, German subtitles

I'm from Germany too and I say play in English. I usually prefer German because it's my mother tongue and I'm used to it, but in GTA... [have to go on in German, can't explain in English]...

 

Zu GTA gehört es meiner Meinung nach es auf English zu spielen. Das ist einfach authentischer und in den Staaten spricht man nun mal English. Es gibt ja immer noch die deutschen Untertitel. Man bekommt das Spielgefühl besser vermittelt, wenn man es im Originalton spielt, finde ich.

 

Edit: Auf Deutsch geht es doch eh nie, oder? Ich kenne GTA nur in englischer Sprachausgabe und mit deutschen Untertiteln.

i'm from austria, so we're pretty much in the same situation. i don't, i repeat, i do not recommend playing with german subtitles. sucks bad. if you have problems understanding then try english subtitles. i'd only go for german subs if the original language was something i couldn't understand at all. it just gets too mixed up if you understand a bit of what theyre saying but have to catch up with the german translation in the subs to check if you got everything right...totally breaks the immersion.

 

if you play with english subs you'll most likely be able to ignore them or even turn them off after some time when you got used to the different characters' voices/slangs.

 

edit: yes, Preusse, the audio thankfully has always been english only.

Haben die vergangenen GTA's nicht alle deutsche Untertitel gehabt? Englisch is ja eh ne sau einfache Sprache oder habt ihr in Deutschland jetzt schon den Englischunterricht durch Türkisch ersetzt?

Even if the game was subtitled on my language, I would still go with english. There are so much bad translation, even if there are professionals doing it!

I think with translation it's often hit & miss because much is lost in translation, best is to play the game how its meant to be in English

I can't stand the Spanish translation of the game, every two sentences i'm like "ok, here in English they meant something completeley different". Sometimes it looks like they've used an old and uncomplete version of Google translate.

it's like movies and tv-shows...always go for the original version if you have a chance of understanding what they say because even the best translation will suck in some parts at least.

I worked for a game company working on translations to English. I can tell you that priority 1 is context, so often jokes, quips that don't necessarily make sense etc are cut. Worse still, sometimes idioms and puns that make absolutely no sense in the target language are actually left in (my fave so far was "Straight from the bridge" meaning something along the lines of "cards on the table" wtf? )

In the case of dubbing, the translation has to be the same length as the original, and we know that is rarely the case - so again, things get cut.

So, I'd recommend always trying to play the game in the original language to be sure you're not missing anything.

there is no german audio, you have to play it in english with german subtitles. i cant imagine how bad a german audio version would be.

 

is there any way to have english subtitles on my 360 when i buy the german usk version of the game?

they also translated some pages of the ingame internet in the german gta iv version, which was quite annoying so i would love to have the original version this time, but i doubt there are any language settings.
