Downfall of GTA driving begins now - Car handling/physics discussion

I love how people wheel out the gta fans line horsecrap when they don't agree with something. I'm glad they've changed it because driving physics in IV were more of a pain in the ass than an enjoyment sure I adjusted to the controls a little but the whole point of a good game is that the controls are fluid and responsive.

Some people have seriously put IV on such a pedistal sure its a decent game and has pushed the frontiers of the series but it was nowhere near perfect. The driving being one of the key things.

The driving in GTA V looks like the following:

  • LA Noire (Which was worse)
  • Just Cause (Which was also twitchy and you stuck to the road, but could spin so that was ok)
  • Sleeping Dogs(Twitchy)
  • Watch Dogs(Twitchy)
  • Saints Row

Shame GTA has always been different for me. The way when you turned your stick the wheels would slowly turn. In all other games V included it seems to respond instantly, which wouldnt happen in real life as turning a wheel takes a tad bit of time.

Watch Dogs isn't even out yet and there is not enough footage to judge how the driving compares to GTA V.

May i ask how come people were complaining about GTA 4's driving in beggining? And now they say how driving is more realistic and sh*t like that? Now same will happen with GTA 5, and they will say how sh*tty GTA 4's driving was, GTA's fan base is seriously getting f*cked up.

gta4 car handling was shocking sports cars turned like tanks.

Now, tanks turn like sports cars.

Nah that's an exaggeration but in all seriousness, I don't see any challenge whatsoever in driving any more. Even if you DO manage to accidentally crash at high speeds (it's tougher because much easier to weave), hardly any damage ever seems to be dealt at times. Oh well

I find SA gets placed on a pedestal more than GTA IV does. This place might aswell be a SA circle jerk.

I agree driving in GTA IV isn't perfect, but it doesn't need to be. IMO it's fun, technical and unforgiving. From what I've seen of GTA V's it doesn't seem to be that bad, but I think I'll miss GTA IV's. Though I'm willing to adapt to it.

josephene123: Definitely it's an exaggeration. Sports cars in GTA IV don't handle like tanks. What the f*ck? Play the game again.

Not all of us complained. I loved the 'grown up' feel of IV and especially the driving physics and the vehicles all feeling so different.

I really feel like V has taken a step back in time to San Andreas era. Which was fine about 10 years ago, but I liked the series moving forward. :/

Still, only personal opinion and such.

For a compromise, there should be 2 options in GTA V menu for driving physics:

- Arcade (we advise you to turn that on if you're 12 year old SA fanboy)

- Realistic (we advise you to turn that on if you like some challenge and actual fun from driving)

Same should go for car damage system:

- Arcade (if you like all cars to be armored)

- Realistic (if you want crashes to be fun)

OK so far no evidence so here it is. Its sh!t.

jgfjgmfgmf-o.gif

What's the problem? Looks perfectly fine to me, like San Andreas.

Are you literally blind? The atv goes over a bump without the slightest bit of air or suspension travel, the whole definition of a bump in the road is that your car will react to it. There is nothing, almost as if that thing was driving on train tracks. Catering to the 4 year old retards that have no idea how cars should handle and whine when they can't drive properly.

This is not worse than gta4, it's a joke. A boring f*cking joke to drive.

Lol, glued to the floor and suspension from what i saw is almost non existant on the motorbikes.

Not once in that gif did it hit anything that would send an ATV into a jump, you know vehicles are heavy right?

Does bike suspension in GTA V move at all? It seems stiff. Here in this GTA IV video you can see that suspension works on every single bump. Especially from 0:51

Ok retard. Here you go,

enjoy seeing the arcade driving you enjoy.

Please note the 90 degreee turn he made...

this.

90° turn makes me vomit.

gta should not be arcadey, its a drama (with funny references and hidden jokes) but its not a crazy fun pink dildo story. whenever i want to play arcade games, i go play mariokart 64. But even there, a 90° turn like this wasn't possible, it made u slide.

I like how everyone arguing against the point these guys are making have suddenly fell into hibernation when he posted this video because they know he's right and he has the footage to back it up.

You can clearly see the ATV suspension doing exactly the same thing in the gif, it's not as extreme but it's certainly more realistic

At the near beginning he goes over a bump...and over multiple others which is why it looks like the wheels are shaking yet the body of the ATV just sits in a solid position...Honestly watch that video of the ATV at 0:20 where he jumps, the suspension when he lands is non existent.

Yea that is a bit crap looking at the full video, oh well, I don't play the game for the suspension anyway, the driving looks fine to me, I hated GTA IVs driving

Ah great, Thanks twigs! I didn't notice that first time watching the video and now I have it can not be unseen.:lol:

This thread is full of hypocritics. Someone express their opinion then 2nd guy comes in and telling him to stop with complaining, while he complains about him. Morrons.. everywhere!

My thoughts exactly, this forum has now been invaded by recently joining, moronic children who can do nothing better than to complain and slag the game off.

Seriously 90% of posts here now are all negative, where's the love?

I know the driving isn't amazing and it may be slightly arcarde-like, but it still looks fun and is no where near as bad as everyone is making it out to be. Some vehicles physics I have seen are actually quite good, it just seems to be the sports cars that are overly nimble.

Why? Why does this come up every time some people have legit issues? Sorry to break your bubble, but we are not all children. We are just giving critical feedback that companies believe it or not like to hear.

My feeling after having seen a few videos of the driving is this, and even though I have not played the game I can clearly see that it looks to me that they have taken a solid step backwards in relation to what I personally would have hoped would happen in GTA V.

Quite frankly I have to say that I am a bit surprised that it looks at bas as it does, the clips showing the faster cars look quite horrible to be honest, the handling is to responsive and the cars does not seem to have an appropriate physics to them that makes it look like they have some heft,

Also I have to say that it looks to me that they have seriously missed the train on one of the most important element when it comes to immersion and that is the sens and feeling of speed in relation to your environment, from the clips I have seen it looks like the driving is "fast-forward" and I get a non favorable impression to say the least.

I have stated many times that while I did not think the handling of GTA IV was perfect I was at least to a point positively surprised, though I have to admit as well that I was not a huge fan of the boat like feeling that the driving had in GTA IV, that being said I for me my dissapointment with GTA IV was in huge effect because I simply find the driving physics of Mafia II superior to other open world games. 2K Czech understood how to cater to the fans of Mafia and even included a choice between arcade and simulation handling in Mafia II, and from what I am seeing the handling of Mafia II on arcade setting looks better then what appears to be the case in GTA V.

Mafia II did the immersion of speed nearly perfect in terms of the feeling of you environment and between the difference of various cars, most importantly that the fastest cars did not feel overly crazy in terms of speed and in relation to the other cars driving at the normal speed limit, and also the cars in Mafia II feels much less boat like then GTA VI.

I am pleased however from my point of view to see that so many complain about the driving in GTA V becasuse then it makes it more plausible that if the game hits PC then hopefully it is one of the first things that the modders will try to change.

I will of course watch more of the gameplay videos and I assume there will be many pure free-roam driving videos after the game comes out so I can have a further looks at it, but from what I have seen so far I am not impressed at all, I expected more from Rockstar who clearly have put in alot of work in the game though perhaps sadly as it seems omitted to dedicate themselves in terms of one of the core features of the game.

At best it is not horribly bad, at worst their choice seems very irrational compared to most other parts of the game.

Issues? The way everyone is putting it makes it sound like a f*cking crisis! Critical feedback is kind of blown out of context when an entire forum turns into a negative wash of hate

The driving sucked balls in GTA 4, I WANT TO BE ABLE TO TURN A CORNER AT 200 MPH, IT'S A f*ckING VIDEO GAME NOT REAL LIFE YOU IDIOT, YOU WANT REAL DRIVING PHYSICS GO PLAY FORZA OR SOMETHING YOU f*ckING MORONS.

Your statement makes no sense at all, many of the things that have been shared by Rockstar about their game towards release have pointed to that while GTA V would be a bit less, what shall I say dark then GTA IV then the series is indeed intended for a mature audience and players, and while there is nothing wrong with arcade and simple-minded easy driving then I would actually expect a mature approach to one of the core elements of the game when many others of the features and also the main-story of GTA V would lean towards mature content.

And I also think that you are horribly wrong in saying that the ones that want more realistic driving should play GT or Forza, I say it the other way around that it is indeed about time that some developers have the balls to bring simulation driving into an open-world game with free-roam becasue I am convinced that many many players want it. Actually it would probably be more fair to tell you to go and arcade racer instead.

Great battle of quad physics

GTA: Vice City Stories (2006, PS2, PSP)

GTA V: (2013, PS3, X360)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mh8KNlmXFdU

Winner: GTA Vice City Stories.

Even in 2006 they knew that:

- you can't turn 90 degrees with a quad in a split second (1:00 in GTA V video).

- wheels also turn when turning the quad

- guy driving the quad has to lean to make a turn

- body of quad is not stationary

They apparently forgot all that in 2013 and decided to take the physics from Mario Kart
