Ryan
Here in Canada the RCMP don't really use of too many larger vehicles. The two main ones they use are the Tactical Armoured Vehicle (TAV) for land operations and the Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat (RHIB) for marine operations. _Tacts
Australia has a rather tamed fleet of specialist vehicles, the most bad ass vehicle being a number of Lenco Bearcat's (1x for each state/territory I believe). We're I'm from we have a few nice trucks too, including this communications truck which can be deployed at large scale incidents to serve as a central command post: Flachbau
Straypuft
Police dog was killed a week ago and yesterday was his funeral service. A lot of people came to pay their respects as well as many area police agencies, especially K-9 crews, I am still surprised they let me into the K-9 car parking area as there were a lot of cars with dogs in them before the service, was a little nervous as one thing when it comes to police dogs is it can be illegal to agitate them and I heard a lot of barking coming from many of the parked cars. Here are some shots from yesterday: Canton Ohio Police Ford Explorer Interceptor by R Seluryar, on Flickr Canton Fire Department Battalion Cheif Ford F-350 by R Seluryar, on Flickr Canton Police Crime Scene Unit Chevrolet Van by R Seluryar, on Flickr (Im all about that vector) NYPD K-9 ESU by R Seluryar, on Flickr (My first time seeing any NYPD vehicle in person) Also of note, this NYPD crew performed an out of jurisdiction rescue while travelling to Ohio yesterday as they were the first to see the accident: http://www.wpxi.com/news/news/state-regional/3-nypd-officers-heading-ohio-rescue-woman-pennsylv/np5kg/ Full video of the funeral can be found here, the last few minutes it gets real emotional as Officer Davis gets ready to take his partner for his final ride (Second video on page is the full one) http://fox8.com/2016/01/14/public-memorial-service-being-held-today-for-canton-k-9-officer-jethro Will post more select photos of this event as soon as I upload them. With new trucks set to be delivered in the coming months these Freightliner's will be decommissioned within the next year. (Thought I'd add a creative touch with selective colour. SouthLand
Why doesn't the US have only ONE or Two police departments for the whole country? I mean, Italy has the "Polizia" and "Carabinieri" all across Italy. The US has thousands LOL
Original Light
Why doesn't the US have only ONE or Two police departments for the whole country? I mean, Italy has the "Polizia" and "Carabinieri" all across Italy. The US has thousands LOL In my opinion, it mostly has to do with efficiency, adaptability, politics, and just the way things fell into place. Each state and town in the U.S. has its own unique climate and needs. Therefore, police departments must be as diverse as the communities they serve. Each state has its own set of training standards for police officers as well. The shape of United States Law Enforcement, at least the way we see it today, was mostly formed in the late 1800's/early 1900's and evolved from there. Aside from different departments being able to have different styles of training, policies, and so on - they can also use equipment best suited for their needs, rather than something mandated. As opposed to being forced to buy one type of car, each department can use what it believes is best for its officers, the community, and the type of climate they're situated in. For example, SUV's may work for my police department, because of our winters, but it may not be the best choice for a department in California. While I'm not familiar if the police in Italy mandate specific sets of equipment for all stations and respective areas, regardless of their needs, I do know that individual departments have much more freedom as opposed to being a part of one larger police force. The NYPD is the closest example I can think of relating to this issue. A few years ago, many precincts were forced to buy Hybrid Nissan Altimas, Hybrid Ford Fusions, Hybrid Ford Flexes, and a few other non-commonly used police vehicles for patrol due to the Mayor. Most of the officers disliked the vehicles entirely. The precincts really had no say in the matter. Most of them are out of the motor pool by now, but this serves as an example to my earlier point. The last reason is probably history and tradition. Each department has its own unique uniform (well, for the most part), their own history, and their own set of beliefs that they uphold. This makes for a less militaristic style of law enforcement, as opposed to having one large militia that all drive the same mandated vehicle, wear the same gray uniform, and carry the equipment country-wide. Which, if you ask me, would be very dull. Not only that, but they wouldn't be as approachable. Anyway, here's some pictures of Connecticut police vehicles. Connecticut State Police DMV Police My Town's Police Department: A college campus police vehicle in a town near me: Unmarked cars with lightbars is something that I've only ever seen in Connecticut. I suppose you could say that we're unique. Edited July 28, 2016 by Original Light PhillBellic

ItalianSupercars
Not sure if this thread is completely inactive or not, but I love it. I've got a lot of police/fire photos from mainly Northeast and Central Florida. The ones here are from Flagler County, retirement area on the NE Florida coast. All pictures are mine and none are stolen. If from an outside source, it will be stated. This CVPI here is ancient. The badge and decals on the side that isn't in the shot were faded and there was rust on the spotlight and the fenders. I doubt this car is used for patrol: C.O.P stands for Citizens' Observer Program, which is the unarmed volunteer division. Mainly used to deal with traffic, it almost completely consists of the elderly. This Tahoe's a relic. Our SRO drives it: Flagler Beach Police Department: I've got a lot more than Flagler County, but might not post them if the thread is done for. I like seeing others with a liking for first response vehicles. Edited October 2, 2016 by ItalianSupercars

Around here, There are communities that have unarmed Auxiliary units that are usually seen assisting the police with road blocks and extra security for special events.
