Looking for help, re: Crews

I searched for info, but all I found was the Official GTAV Forums Crew topic. That didn't help.

What I'm looking for is someone that can explain to me in simple terms how crews will work in GTA V.

I didn't play Max Payne 3 online, and I am not currently a member of a crew, so I have no idea how they work.

If I join one, will I be expected to play GTA V Online at certain times and for certain lengths of time? I don't have a lot of time for gaming lately, and I don't know how much time I can "commit" to a crew, but on the other hand, I would like to experience Online features like robbing banks etc with real life players and not just AI teammates.

So apologies if this thread upsets folks, but really I've no clue. Thanks in advance for any advice.
