In the wave of previews a few weeks ago, they confirmed that you can buy dogs, customize them (collars, at least), they can be killed if you aren't careful, and there is more than one breed. Don't remember which article, but there is hard proof. If you actually do a google search you see that there is no confirmation of Rockstar about this.
