Do you need a disk in the tray if running off HDD/USB?

If so, what's the benefit of installing it?

 

I was going to install the whole of GTA V but I see little point if you have to have the game in the slot at the same time.

The benefit is, you can play the game. It's mandatory.

Jokes aside, it can load faster. Also, Xbox version needs 2 CDs.

xbox has one mandatory disc and one not but installing both is better for console life i install all my games and it is quieter

Even if you fully install, the disc does need to be in the console as proof that you actually have the game in you possession.

 

Installing the entire game to your harddrive means that even though the disc needs to be in the console, it doesn't need to be spinning, because there's no data needed from it. It extends the life of your your hardware, keeps temperature down, and the game loads faster off a harddrive than the disc. If you have the space, I highly recommend it.

If you install it to the Xbox entirely, that means the only time it reads the disc is to make sure you have it. It's so the system knows you own the game, otherwise people would install games at their friends Xboxs. I actually got the expansion content for Oblivion that way...
