Absolutely no insecurity here. Quite the opposite in fact. I'm a proud white male. I love what I was born as and I do my best to hold true to the nature of my being. My girlfriend attests to this and is quite happy about my masculinity and dominance as well. She is also quite happy to embrace her natural form, which is to be a submissive female. I’m simply a lurker but I see this debate constantly for games so I just wanted to share my own view as a female gamer whose life doesn't revolve around the beliefs of feminism.

 

Seeing a woman in a game doesn’t get me excited to play, its just a biological characteristic that explains nothing and isn’t a bonding factor. What makes me excited to play is the same thing as when I see a game with a male protag; the gameplay, the storyline and the motives of the character. Sure it helps if he’s a gruff jacked dude as that’s visually appealing to me but without being properly written he’s just an expensive pin up. Rockstar like other great companies understands that what motivates a character and why a player should care is far more important to creating a great protag than just them looking like their target demo. Thats why protags don't all look like the majority of players and even when they share the same gender, race, etc it isn't a horrible thing when its a male. Playing as a white or male anything shouldn't deem a game unplayable or be a sign of intolerance if one expects mass acceptance of the gender, race, and religion they want to see playable. More choices are good but not when its carried out as a vendetta.

 

So anyway time and time again R* has proven that they can write understandable characters within and beyond just a straight white male without compromising their players. They didn't have to do this yet from GTA1 to now they keep creating diverse interesting casts without being forced and guess what? It f*cking works. Why? Because its a genuine effort on their part as creativity works best when it comes from the heart not at a figurative gun point.

 

So if Houser felt this story needed to be told by 3 different men then so be it as no where in that does he show a disdain for women or anyone else not like Michael, Trevor or Franklin. If R* wants a female protag for future titles to be added to their list of already established female criminals and side characters then fine, there should be no doubts in their ability to do that but if they never do then thats okay too. They're games are not bound to the rules of what others deem equal just like they don't dictate how any other game or work must be made to their standards.

 

Game companies shouldn't have to bow to the inconsistent whims of a much smaller group that doesn't even know what it wants in females. Nor should designers be ashamed for the content they create the moment no woman is playable or when boobs are a size one deems unacceptable are involved. Doing the reverse to what females like/create is rarely done or accepted by mainstream “gaming journalists” so it shouldn’t be when the target is what men like to create.

 

Thats all I wanted to post. Can't wait to play in less than a week!!

Its blatant hypocrisy as women’s entertainment has these same aspects that don't cater to most men or even represent men correctly yet does Kotaku or Polygon run a piece on how yaoi artists or romance novels writers are teenage girls for drawing/showing idealized men they like? No, so it shouldn’t be an issue when men do it for their work. Sexual=/=sexist. No female protag=/=anti-woman. Don't know why thats so hard for some to get.

Thank you as well, I don't exactly see the views posted here as representative of actual feelings nor do I think R* does either as if they did we wouldn't have so many interesting non-white male characters. I feel the ones who hold these views are only thinking of a PC shoehorned in female due to the soucre of the demand. I highly doubt they'd be against playing an origin story of Catalina or Asuka, two criminals R* wasn't afraid of putting into their first 3D GTA but hey I could be wrong.

 

Still I'm just as frustrated with modern feminism as most of the men here but at the same time I can't ignore R* expertise and trust that if they ever felt they wanted a female protag it wouldn't be unplayable. Just as it wasn't when GTA switched from being top down, when it had a black protag, when the story became more serious, when it had an Asian protag, etc. I do support the backlash against those blasting R* and others for not creating games centered around their inconsistent views of women, I just go about it differently.

If whatever story that Rockstar creates emphasizes/revolves around a feminine character or characters, then Rockstar will create that story and implement a female protagonist or protagonists. They will just have to deal with it. Considering the majority of the audience that buys Rockstars games are at least 90% males they are going with the majority. I think they will lose fans if they go with a female protagonist. Unless they let you pick between a male and female. I know if the only person you could play as was a female I probably wouldn't buy the game.

Jesus, there's a lot of sh*t in this thread, I might as well add some.

 

If R* ever decide to add a female protagonist to the game, then they should also add a male protagonist as an alternate storyline for all the people who say 'having a female protag would be lame'. It's clear that a lot of the players of GTA don't actually care about the storyline and just want to kill prostitutes and police and cause havoc. To them, the storyline seems irrelevant and so just give them a shoehorned in representation of themselves.

 

Then running alongside that have the 'proper' storyline featuring a great story with interesting unique characters, like usual.

 

I'm sure R* can write a great story from the perspective of a female since they've written great stories from so many different cultural perspectives before. But the choice is up to them, they definitely shouldn't do this because 'its a hot topic in the gaming world right now'. They've already got a character called 'Quota'.

I think its sad that any of you think the three main characters are any sort of representation of a real man...and if you do then you're still just a boy playing on the playground where girls have coodies and can't join your clubhouse.

I personally can't stand any of the protagonist...I play this game for one simple reason...full open world..if anyone other than R* did this then I would be playing that.
