Not really sure why the topic exists. I didn't see anything about a female lead in any of the quoting.

 

Furthermore, if the housers came up with a cool story with 3 guys, then good for them. If one of those is a woman in the future, which will happen eventually (just like a female US president), good, but don't shoehorn a woman into a role written for a male character just to say it's been done.

 

As if a majority of gamers shun a game purely because of a female protagonist at this point anyway. Look at the new tomb raider: massively overrated.

 

I'll add: women can be masculine, too. Really reaching there.

Unless they change the name from GTA to something else. Last time I checked you almost always have to physically rip someone out of a car in a GTA game to perform the action that the title of the game is named after. How can a naturally born female weighing in at less than 120lbs and standing at a mighty 5'3, rip a grown adult male out of his car against his will?

 

The answer: she can't.

 

But MUH FEMINISM and MUH EQUALITY. It's a f*cking video game. It tells a story that the writers want. But because these social justice c*nts push so hard for this sh*t in videogames as if it matters, now you better believe this will be the last GTA game to not have it's content be forcefully altered due to these social justice c*nts. They will eventually break down and shoe-horn a female character into the game just because the feminazis and transgender wackjobs demand it. Unbelievable.

 

It's not "MUH FEMINISM" or "MUH EQUALITY", it's the opposite. It's the fact that you portrayed a somewhat average woman, rather than any of the possibilities. If the girl was around the same weight but taller, enough exercise could allow her to do those things. Sexism to feminism, it doesn't work; you think you're positing a good point but you're not. In reality, subjectivity has taken over the objectivity, but more importantly and more specifically, close-mindedness has taken rule.

 

Rockstar weren't pushed to shoe-horn a female protagonist into GTA V in spite of complaints in the past and complaints throughout the game's development, so don't expect them to give in any time soon. Rockstar has shown they know how to cater to everyone while also not totally giving in like their suggestion box's contents go straight to becoming features. Rockstar will make a story that fits with a female protagonist (or multiple female protagonists), and until the point where they do so, they'll continue with the male protagonist(s).

Even the GTA games themselves have proven that female criminals can very well exist in these games' worlds and I'd be very interested to play as a female protag and see how R* shapes her story up in a crime world dominated by men. But the important thing is that R* shouldn't feel forced to do this but do it when they think the game will be better served by that.

OT: I think the reason for the lack of a lot of female protags is the vast majority of consumers are male and don't connect as much to female protags than they would males. Simply put, there's no mass market for it in general.

 

btw, I really like the way Fallout New Vegas and Skyrim handled female protags.

My girlfriend attests to this and is quite happy about my masculinity and dominance as well. She is also quite happy to embrace her natural form, which is to be a submissive female. It reads a bit like a crutch to claim masculinity is key to the story telling, especially when you're already telling the story from multiple perspectives. As ambitious and impressive as this game is, I do find this problematic and hope there is some more flack handed to them over this.

There's no real reason why Rockstar couldn't make a game with multiple protagonists and have one of the characters be a woman. There are of course plenty of women involved in crime at all kinds of levels. Even the clichéd crime movie tropes that GTA works best with have plenty of examples of women in crime fiction. There is the popular 'hooker with the heart of gold' or the 'schemer' or the 'gangster's moll' archetypes that they could easily work with, and that's without even getting in to the realms of reality.

 

This could also potentially garner more interest from women in GTA, although that's highly speculative of course.

 

It wouldn't work though if a woman was the only lead character. Primarily because we aren't used to seeing women performing the kind of actions that GTA protagonists do, and GTA is a game that has always played upon popular social concepts and Hollywood tropes. So the gameplay would have to be different, which would have a negative effect if a woman was the only playable character.

 

Also, most of the current GTA gamers are male. Sure it's one thing to watch a movie or even read a novel wherein the lead character is a woman, but in a game it's slightly different. The need to identify with a character in a game is slightly different. To a certain extent, a game avatar is an extension of the self, through which your actions and agency are represented. This is why when you tell your friend about something that happened in game you would say "I jacked a cop car" this is because it's your actions that are represented. You wouldn't say "Niko jacked a cop car" because you aren't just watching a character do something, you are assuming the role of that character and your identity is represented to a certain extent through them from a psychological perspective.

 

That's why most men find it slighlty more difficult to identify with a female character. That's why if you have the choice of character on any game, most men will make a male character, although i'm sure that social convention plays a significant part in this too. men typically will feel more comfortable playing as a male avatar.

 

So yes, having a woman as one of multiple characters could work just fine. But having a woman as a sole lead would be a mistake i feel...

 

Oh yeah and of course girls are stupid and have cooties etc...
