Fail_At_GTA
Its not 49sq miles. If you have ever looked at the mapping thread, you would clearly be able to see the map is between 20 and 25sq miles, closer to 20 though. Don't believe one random source that the map is 49sq miles. That would also go against what Rockstar has said about the landmass being 3.5x RDR or GTA 4 + RDR + SA.
reform
the map that comes with the game is going to be double sided for the firsrt time ever because the maps soo large Chances are, one side will be the entire map, and the other side will be a more detailed map of just Los Santos. Fail_At_GTA
How big is 49 square miles???? The GTA 4 map including water was 6.25sq miles I believe. 49sq miles would be roughly 8x the size of GTA 4. But don't forget, 49sq miles isn't even close to being confirmed. The map will be 20-25sq miles.

Fail_At_GTA
All these "sources" that say 49sq miles have measured RDR and GTA 4 completely wrong. With the actual calculations based on the info Rockstar has given us and the great work of the mapping thread combined with the outline of the map, we know pretty much the exact scale, which as I have said many times so far, is 20-25sq miles

Magic_Al
How big is 49 square miles???? Two times the size of the real life Manhattan! Manhattan boasts 23 square miles ... Everybody read this artcile. It is another source "confirming" the 49 square miles. http://whatculture.com/gaming/gta-v-9-facts-that-will-blow-your-mind.php/2 Well I see their problem. They used poor "research" trying to add up the sizes of previous games. They gave the square mileage of RDR, IV, and SA as 28, 6.8 and 13.9. Only SA is right. The actual, playable area of LAND (separate from water) in those games is 5.75, 3.3, and 11.3, totaling 20.35. GTAIV does have a map that's about 6.6 square miles, but half of it is water, which should not be counted in an island area comparison. RDR being 28 square miles is total bullsh*t, folklore from somebody years ago claiming one translated article said Rockstar said it was twice the size of San Andreas. It's provably not. The amount of land you might see in RDR is 17.4 square miles, but you are trapped within 6 square miles including a river you can't swim in. Rockstar is certainly counting only the touchable land in their comparison, not low-detail boundary terrain. All the descriptions Rockstar has given must have a matching result: the area of V including underwater must equal 5x RDR, and the landmass of V must be 3.5x RDR's landmass. The size of V must be bigger than SA, IV, and RDR with "room to spare". Plugging in the wrong number anywhere in these will make them not equal each other. 100broken
San Andreas is the only map with R* confirmed numbers @ 13.9, GTA IV has some pretty solidly researched numbers at around 6 sq miles of total map sprawl and RDR has a concensus range of between 7 and 11 sq miles. I wouldn't be so sure that R* would only count land mass of IV as you still need to traverse over the water when travelling, but that's incidental. I'm gonna use the numbers above which would make the map between 27 and 33 sq miles. Only including GTA IV land mass the map is anywhere between 24 and 28 sq miles. The serious problem with the numbers showing the map as 49 sq miles is that it doesn't match with the second comparison that R* gave which was 3.5x and 5x (including underwater) the size of RDR. 28 sq miles x 3.5 is 98 sq miles!!! R* have given 2 different comparisons so they have to at least be close to adding up. The closest is 13.9 (confirmed R* number for GTA: SA) approx 6 (GTA IV) and approx 8 for RDR = approx 27.9 sq miles. RDR 8 x 3.5 = 28 sq miles

strakan7
The point here is that the landmass is only part of the map. 8x5=40 (plus a little extra, they said) which could well add up to AROUND 49...it would have made more sense to say 6x RDR if that is the case though. Also considering the gameplay area in RDR is 8 miles of only ground, none of it spent anywhere except on terra firma, the actual gameplay area will include all pilotable airspace, all sailable ocean surface and mapped ocean floor and water inbetween and i dont doubt that as usual, there is an infinite sea tht stretches forever, making the flyable zones basically infinate! lets hope this is the case, especially in online... World Champion
Go to Google Earth and crop an area you're familiar with, and you'll get a pretty good idea for the size. When I think about running all the streets below, it's mind boggling to think how big that will feel. I've cropped 20sq miles of city, and 29sq miles of countryside. Try one yourself. When he does quote Garbut it's not that, and it's taken without attribution from Buzzfeed's interview with him. lxr
