How is Rockstar going to sustain GTA Online financially in the years t

Hey,

I've been a long time reader on this forum, thought I may as well signup.

Anyway this question was on my mind.

How is Rockstar going to sustain it?

Rockstar only gets our money for GTA every 5 years or so. Not everyone will buy the DLC so how are they going to sustain millions of people playing for several years to come when they won't receive proper lump sums from us.

I reckon in a year or two we will have to pay for GTA Online.

There is probably going to be terms and conditions in gta online which we agree to before playing and never read, hidden in there will probably be "we reserve the right to demand payment at any time to play" or something like that.

What do you think?

DLC and other cash shop items.

I reckon that in two years you don't have to pay to play the game. The trend in the MMO market has clearly been moving towards the abolishment of the subscription model in favor of selling items.

Micro Transactions. GTA has such a large fanbase that if only 5% of GTA Online players purchases all of the DLC they will still make enough to maintain the servers.

GTA isn't Rockstar's only source of income.

Yea but at the end of the day beyond all the glamour and hype - Rockstar is a business, if its not making money they have to do something about it.

Think of the amount of people playing and the amount of servers required.

They could end up losing money.

I don't see why they/Rockstar can't support the game.

For 5 years worth of running costs say $250 Million (Taking an MMO games cost in this case World of Warcraft)

Reported Development cost are $266 Million

Projected World wide sales : 25 million (taking the GTAIV sales)

Average cost per copy : $60 (walmart cost) *Excluding any Ltd editions/Special Editions

Giving a launch sale total of : $1.5 Billion

Exclude development costs : $1.234 Billion

Give 10 years worth of running cost still leaves them : $734 Million

Now you could go down the line of adding in Ltd Editions and DLC bundles but profits from those would be eaten away by marketing costs....

So yeah dont worry about cost :-D

The same way call of duty do ....

This. COD makes just as much on the sh*tty maps as they do the full games. Not to mention micro transactions...

R* will make 1 billion dollars with GTA V on the very least using the european scale system...

If the servers would take 1 million/year of maintainence, then GTAO would be up for 1000 years.

I don't think it'll be an issue.

Look at IV, servers for that are still up. Don't worry about it, just focus on shooting your friends when the game comes out.

There's no dedicated servers for it so there is no financial requirement to sustain it. It's just there to stop people selling their coppy as pre-owned.

How do the free to play MMO's keep their servers up?

Micro-transactions.

But they have to pay to keep their dedicated servers up. There's not such requirement for GTA: Online as games are player-hosted.

Am I wrong in thinking CoD players host the game?

When the host f*cks off, the game is stopped until the next one is chosen.

Sorry to burst your bubble. The interview talked about GTAOnline being run in Social Club servers scattered around Rockstar studios, and that all data would be stored on the cloud. That sounds dedicated to me.

But I think we'll get nothing more than some DLC's or micro-transactions, I don't see Rockstar charging for GTAOnline.

The Benz talked about how they plan to progressively expand the GTA Online world to include other cities in the future. I suspect that access to those cities won't be free.

According to Rockstar, GTA Online access is given by buying GTA V, at the cost of the actual game, 60$. I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually sold online only access for a reduced price, giving them the ability to sell GTA V and online as separate products. If they do, Rockstar will be preying on the stupid crowd - buying the online portion and then buying the single player would most likely end up more expensive than simply buying GTA V in the first place granting the online access.

Alternatively, like it has been mentioned before here, cosmetic items, like limited bodywork for cars, special clothing for characters, etc and mission packs. These seem like the most cost-effective options for Rockstar - they don't require too much work when compared to their previous DLC packs like EFLC, and they won't distort competitive gameplay.

Rockstar plans to continuously pump content into online, so they definitely have a monetization plan in place that will kick in harder closer to the middle of the product lifecycle - probably after christmas as sale growth begins to flatten.

Cost of maintaining servers isnt as much as you are making it out to be, Its not like its going to cost 100,000s of dollars every year. A few decent DLC packs 2-3 times a year will more than cover the cost of server upkeep / maintenance and rental fees.

As said, micro-purchases.

But, if they were to add larger DLC onto GTA Online like HD Vice City, Las Venturas and such then NO GTA gamer would resist buying that.

There's no doubt character data will be stored elsewhere, but there's no way actual games will be hosted on dedicated servers. The 16 player cap alone is enough to back that up.
