Udrift
Just like the digital preload needs a key to unlock it, same could be true for the disc. There is a mandatory install, and that might prevent it from working without a patch. It might not be functional at all until Rockstar releases the key. ltajax
errm no......... disc games on consoles dont need online authentication to play them. doing that would mean an internet connection is required.... you never need an internet connection for your consoles unless you want to play online Edited September 8, 2013 by ltajax crisissasix and GTAV92

DaRkL3AD3R
That would be unfair for people like me who's consoles are not hooked up to the internet. Guess what? This has been the case with virtually every PC game since 2003 when half life 2 was released along with steam. Every PC game you buy since, even hard copies in store, require online activation to play. Even if its single player only. Consoles need better authentication because I am sick of the modders and hackers on my console. What's the f*cking point to gaming on a sh*tty box from 2005 if I still have to tolerate 12 year old c*nts who think its fun to cheat and mod in online. alz-yer-pal
if that was the only reason there isnt any people would actually have the game and there would be pics of the map floating about instead Udrift
jdog2115
There are license files called .RAF, those are why we can't access the content of the preload leak (because it would be impossible to decrypt it by the time a physical copy comes out.) discs come with the license file already on it while the preload just needs to download the files on the 17th. Udrift
Good point about the maps. From Wiki about Steam "As such, the user is required to have started Steam while connected to the Internet for authentication prior to playing a game, or have previously set up Steam in an "offline" mode while connected online, storing their credentials locally to play without an Internet connection. Steam's DRM is available through Steamworks to software developers, but the service allows developers and publishers to include other forms of DRM and other authentication services on top of Steam" At E3 2010, Newell announced that Steamworks would arrive on the PS3 with Portal 2"

S1LV3R_W0LF
I couldn't play my GTAIV PC in the first 2 days because there was a problem with my activation key, and that was the time Rockstar took to answer me. So taking into account that the same game will be valid for single player and an extensive online game, I wouldn't be surprised a one time connection/ autentication would be needed. In fact it's one of the things that make online gaming different in PC's and consoles, any pirated copy from consoles can be used to play online with full support, while in a PC online doesn't work without an original copy of the game. If you digitally pre-order/load that's a different story. Buy a disc based PC game and there will be no encryption on the disc preventing you from playing it early. I don't think you get the point of this topic mate. Edited September 8, 2013 by TheRealBars
topdownshooter
Rockstar just havent started shipping copies to retailers and they wont until 3 days before the release. Simple as that, not rocket science.

Simple as that, not rocket science. Not entirely true, distribution centers and warehouses across the globe will most likely already have the shipping crates, which will be sent to retailers this week arriving close to the end of the upcoming week. (Distribution centers are well protected against theft) If they werent sent out at all there would be no way they could stock the entire world with copies of the game. cashsmuggler
if that was true Rockstar would not of been soo strongminded about the game not being dispatched early by online retailers don't worry their will be stuff up online this week I reckon

Im no expert on retail shipping procedures but I know that usually Gamespot doesnt get the games scheduled for Tuesday release any earlier than a couple days.
