Corky McButterpants
I was intrigued about how big 49 square miles would be and how to visualize it, so i plotted roughly 49 miles by 49 miles and its bigger than i thought. I then plotted a route from the west to the east side of this area to see how long it would take to drive and to walk. Bare in mind it is only a rough idea because google maps doesnt account for driving off road lol. Driving would take between 1 hour and 7 minutes to 1 hour and 23 minutes. If you look at the picture it says 60 miles but bare in mind it isnt a straight route from a to b, the winding about (if you stick to the roads) adds a few more miles. Some people mentioned walking it, so i checked that too. Between 18 hours and 33 minutes to 18 hours and 54 minutes, f#ck that! Not sure that it would actually take that long but if you bare in mind its calculated on WALKING and not running, i dunno, maybe. I certainly wont be doing it anyway! That aint how 'square miles' work... gta_rulez
Trund
Not again.... I'm waiting for someone to reply "Oh, that's so much! If I calculated it right, 49 x 49 is 2401!" , would be the déjà-vu of the day.
Found_Again
Well OP, you typically provide facts on most things but I'm gonna take this with a grain of salt. I hope it's true, though.

Ash_735
Hey I'm just repeating what they've said, since they've been the only article to outright mention the size so far.

gwaha
That map size is likely wrong. The only way to reach that size is by believing RDR is 28 square miles which it isn't by a long shot. 28 square miles makes RDR much bigger than Skyrim, which is just not likely. Based on numerous calculations RDR playable area is actually 6 or so square miles. RDR is only slightly bigger than GTA 4's landmass. Edit: @Pinkman Wow. That makes sense. I have before seen calculations of RDR being 5.4 square miles (from F4t4l1ty) which makes 3.5 times RDR exactly 18.9 square miles which is 49 square kilometers. So it does seem like The Scotsman just exchanged kilometers with the word miles. Edited September 8, 2013 by gwaha

Itzik_Maflitzik
I did a little research and GTA 5's map is about 79.5mi² (205.9km²) including the underwater area. Rockstar said GTA 5's map is about 5 times the size of RDR (landmass is 3.5) (55.65mi²) (144.13km²) So RDR's map is 15.9mi² and if i double it 5 times it's 79.5 and if 3.5 so it's 55.65. So there you have it, the possible size of GTA 5. Edited September 8, 2013 by liav114

darpop
San andreas, red dead, gta iv times it all by 3 or i believe 5 times bigger its about 140 square miles
killahmatic
Hopefully the landmass alone is 49 square miles, because if you subtract interiors and underwater areas the landmass isn't that big still far bigger than any other GTA, and thats all that should matter. FranklinDeRoosevelt
Some people think they're so smart, right? How would you know what the actual size is? And some of you are just not open minded, how do you know if the unplayable area of RDR is also not included? It could be. Though I'm VERY happy with 20-25 sq miles, 49 sq miles is what I believe in right now.

Though I'm VERY happy with 20-25 sq miles, 49 sq miles is what I believe in right now. How does a site like The Scotsman know the actual size? They were even completely wrong about the bridge they mentioned being from somewhere else instead of it being a copy of the Vincent Thomas bridge in LA. And why on earth would Rockstar even include the non-playable area when coming up with a size comparison? Who would logically include that anyway? It is not an actual part of the map. RDR with unplayable map is 15.927 square miles based on the map being 7500 x 7500 pixels. This makes 3.5 times RDR 55.65 (or actually 55.74 if you first use kilometers to come up with the total number) square miles. Let's be fair then and count the entire map of GTA 4 including the water and everything of GTA SA. GTA 4 is then 8.8 square miles and GTA SA is 13.9 square miles. So then RDR + GTA 4 + GTA SA makes the map 38.7 square miles. As I recall when Rockstar made this comparison they also stated with "room to spare". So the number is not the same. Yet if you only use RDR's playable area you get 5.4 square miles times 3.5 is 18.9 square miles which is 49 (48.9) square kilometers. Rather coincidental how that looks like the number The Scotsman used. And that is if they have been told anything instead of using the faulty 28 square miles number for RDR. RDR is not anywhere near that size. Post in question with reliable numbers: http://gtaforums.com/topic/531982-very-detailed-analysis-of-map-sizes/?p=1062508457 Note how the map with water is probably 100 square kilometers based on how Rockstar's maps always seem to be one meter per pixel. The most important note is actually that Rockstar's maps are clearly calculated in meters. A pixel is one meter on Rockstar's game maps. This is why it makes a whole lot of sense that The Scotsman may have been told that the map is 49 square kilometers instead of miles. Shampson360
So I think its bigger then 49square miles. Watching the shamal fly through blaine county. It seemed like it was going slow. The map looks huge
Pantera2198
I really did like Just Cause 2,but it needs work. GTA still owns sandbox IMO because they have a high qaulity in control, driving, shooting, and pretty much everything you can do is polished to the minute details. While JC:2 had some fantastic value if you broke it down it has a lot of things needing to be one to make it Grand Theft Auto qaulity.

Powner811
GTA SA will feel small once you put 10x draw distance mod, get in the game and fly around with hydra. Its big on ground level but not much in air level. Same with RDR, if you check videos of flying glitch, playable area isnt as big as on ground level. GTA 4 felt the same too, GTA V will be the same i believe. Basically, every game is like that besides JC2. JC2 was like a f**** country.

NickStone
I was intrigued about how big 49 square miles would be and how to visualize it, so i plotted roughly 49 miles by 49 miles and its bigger than i thought. I'm not sure if this was addressed, but 49 miles wide times 49 miles long, isn't 49 square miles. You would calculate the square root of 49, and use that number for X and Y. For example, 5 miles wide, times 5 miles long, = 25 square miles. (Square root of X is which number, multiplied by itself, equals X.) Square root of 49, is 7, so you would plot out on a map an area that's 7 miles by 7 miles. I've read plenty of articles that "claim" that 49 square miles was confirmed, but without official word from Rockstar, it's still just conjecture. Maybe Rockstar did say it and I missed it though? I admit I haven't read everything they've released. Rockstar had said Los Santos would be bigger than 3 past worlds combined. I can't remember which cities those were, but I think they were the ones I've listed below (for a little comparison): Red Dead Redemption = 15.9 sq. m. GTAIV Liberty City = ~6 sq. m. San Andreas = 13.9 sq. m. Edited September 9, 2013 by NickStone

Fail_At_GTA
I dont get why we have two threads of this going Both of the threads are going nowhere. Everyone assumes that RDR is 28sq miles when its barely even bigger than GTA 4. Most people cant accept the fact that GTA 5 will be 20-25sq miles, not including the water.
