Is the city part of the map as small as it looks?

The art director of V recently said that Los Santos is as big as if you took GTA IV's map and smushed the all of the islands together.

Which, looking at the most recent city pic (the one from IGN) seems like a slight embellishment, the scale of the city seems to be what's gonna draw us in.. I don't think the city is necessarily large as much as it is detailed. It's about the size of Broker\Dukes\Bohan.

What makes you think that? Real life L.A. is bigger than NYC in terms of square mileage. I've heard that we can expect downtown Los Santos and it's surrounding neighborhoods (suburban, not rural) can be compared to the size of the entire GTA IV's map alone.

Just from checking a few of the pics we've seen so far, we've got a fair amount of areal\high up pics of the city. Though we've yet to see panorama I think we've got a good idea of what we're working with.

It's big, has lots of pretty lights and a grid-pattern.. But Just to me, doesn't seem bigger than The boroughs of LC.

The reason it looks that way is because Liberty City has more smaller streets than LS. 3 liberty city blocks are the size of 1 LS block. Just like in real life. The streets in LA are much wider while NYC streets are more dense and smaller. LS to me looks about the size of the entire Liberty City. It only makes sense.

So no, it's not small at all.

That's what she said.

See to me that makes it seem small. I actually thought the IV map was a rather decent size until I recently decided to climb to the top of the in-game Empire State Building and actually look around (was really cool watching the sun rise from the horizon across the map, actually had a "wow" moment when it happened) and it just made the area seem really really small.

LS is bigger than LC, OBVIOUSLY.

The first island(LS and Blaine) isn't as big as what people think, but it's the biggest among the islands.

Then, there's SF, LV, their respective countrysides, and North Yankton.

I am holdiing my judgmeant tell I have the game in the my PS3, and the controller in my hand, at that point, I will judge the size of the map, but the to be honest, I am sure I wont really care right away, as I will be to busy smiling that I am playing GTA V, and causing troubel once again in SA again

Lol at SF and LV. They are NOT in the game.

The combined area of GTAIV's islands is 3.3 square miles, which are spread out over about 6 square miles of water in the game. According to my scale estimate of Los Santos, depending what you consider the city limits to be, it's about 5 square miles. It's not as wide as Liberty City but it has significantly more content and a larger contiguous area.

i think its the fact its one island not 2 or 3 we cant really get a proper idea how big it will be till we actually play it and jizz everywhere

It will be fine, no need for everyone to ask about it 24/7.

There's even a topic specifically for questions about V.

Los Santos is going to have the perfect size for fun. But lets be real it ain´t large, is a compressed version of L.A. and it´s surroundings.

Lets just put it this way, it'll probably take you 20 hours to explore very lawyers metre of the map...you saw everything in GTA 4 very quickly and lost of it's exploration qualities

How can you say the city looks small? What GTA has had a real life sized city? Some of you people are acting like this is the smallest city rockstar has ever done but in fact its the single biggest city we have ever had.

If you think it's small watch this.

+1 respect. Great video. It's a shame when you think about, how someone needs to post a video which demonstrates how big the city really is, because some 12 year old kids are whining about how small the map looks. Hopefully this video can open peoples' eyes.

It's actually a little early to say. We need to play the game before we can say for sure if Los Santos is bigger than Liberty City. In my mind, they're about the same size, which is fine by me really.
