So, I'm going to play GTAIII for the first time

Recommended Posts

Pretty much the title.

I came into the series with IV and various knock-offs, so I've been gradually working my way back through the series. What's good about GTA 3 and what's bad?

Any suggestions whether I should get it on console (which I have access to older machines for) or PC?

The usual questions.

What's the best part of the game in your opinion?

Worse?

Grand Theft Auto III is the game in which the series became successful for. It revolutionized the videogame industry, and it defined the openworld genre. There is so much to do, it has a good storyline and good gameplay, Liberty City only looks small on a map once you enter it...

While I find no bad points, you will coming from a later GTA. Grand Theft Auto III has no ingame map (other than minimap), no bailing out of cars, no swimming and doesn't have as many side missions of that of San Andreas. It also misses out a few other things I can't think of.

All in all, it is an enjoyable game yet lacks features from the later GTA Games. It is my personal favorite in the series

Good - Story, characters, city. It was all awesome. Story was nice, characters fit in the story and the city is probably the best Liberty City R* ever created.

Bad - Handling. It is very easy to flip over a car or destroy it very quickly in a few crashes.

I think you should get this game, it's very good and is worth playing icon14.gif

Get the Xbox version (it plays on the 360) for the best graphics. Either that or the Steam version on PC.

Good points and bad points are very subjective. So I will just leave the ultimate decision about pros and cons up to you. You should try the game to know, anyway It is well worth it.

What may be bad though, is that the game may be deemed "outdated", mostly so because of the lack of many features that were gradually added in the following GTA games. And depending on how many you've played, there can be a big disappointment for you. For some, it is the reason to hate this game, telling "GTA III is sh*t, SA/IV is da king!!!" I really hope that you will understand that this game was made in 2001 and was the first GTA game in 3D. The game in whole was an experiment.

About the platform: I advise you get the PS2 version, seeing as this is the original GTA III. Newer versions lack that "darkness" in the game's atmosphere.

I'm very interested in the character of Claude (silent protagonist that he is) and the characters who started it all. So it should be fun.

Plus, you'll find out how many stories of other III era games set in motion events that resulted in the events of III, either directly or indirectly.

And yes, storyline wise, this is where it all started. Timeline-wise, this is where it all ended. It's interesting to know.

I agree with the other guys, this is a brilliant game and you should thoroughly enjoy it.

Please no attacks, but I recommend you pirating the game first, trying it out, and if you like it - buy a legal copy. If not - delete and forget. While this might sound all kinds of bad, if more people were doing this, we would get less of topics like this: Now that's one pointless topic

Quicky edit that before anyone else sees that. wink.gif Piracy isn't allowed on GTAForums.

It will be a bit hard to get used to the controls at first, but eventually you will get used to it. The game is a masterpiece, it is definitely worth playing regardless of its age, after all it's a game which made Grand theft auto series popular. The missions and story are interesting and fun despite the lack of features, you will love it. smile.gif Even if you won't like it much, I'd suggest at least playing through story if not anything else.

There's not much to say about that anymore, everything else has already been said. Just enjoy the game. And BTW I'd suggest PC/PS2 version they are the best in my opinion. However, I wouldn't recommed Android/iOS version especially when you are playing for the first time. The game just didn't feel right, you will do better with other versions instead. icon14.gif

I don't know why you would say that. PC and PS2 versions aren't very different. Even the Xbox version is pretty much the same, only with improved graphics.

I've been playing III too, and it's amazing how the game is still fun after all these years and looks great!

DO PARAMEDIC AS SOON AS YOU'RE FREE TO ROAM AROUND, OR ELSE YOU WILL REGRET IT. Other that that, expect a great game, save for a few frustrating missions here and there. Have fun!

I ordered it for the Xbox in a duo-pack with Vice City. Sadly, Expedited Shipping lied to me as it's supposedly shipped Thursday of the last week (I was tempted to get it for PC too) but it hasn't arrived despite leaving since New York for Kentucky.

Which is ******* because I want to play!

The conrols are very outdated, but once you get over that, and play it within the context that that game is 12 years old, it's still great.

I second what that other poster said about doing the Paramedic missions ASAP. Also, there will be a mission whereby you travel to the second island. Make sure you have thoroughly explored the first island and done every sort of mission you can find there before completing said mission (In the off chance you don't already know, I won't explain why, so as to avoid spoiling the game for you.)

I'm eleven missions into "GTA 3" and am enjoying the ambiance of the game. The controls are very different from later versions (not to mention I have a 360) so it's a bit hard learning new things due to Muscle Memory. However, so far, I'm enjoying this stuff a great deal. Claude may not say much but he's certainly the coolest LOOKING protagonist.

Also, it's easy to project your own feelings onto him.

Yeah this, the PC game was brighter though....but can be made dark again with the graphic settings (too dark if you're not careful). It still has the fog and fuzzy lighting effects like the consoles do.

I don't in particular recommend any version over the other....they are all essentially the same.

It's good that you are enjoying it so far though.

You could get IV pad controls when playing on PC, but not on Xbox sadly.

Oh, yes, they are different. Maybe you haven't actually played them all to know the difference, but it is there.

The PS2 version is darker and more colorful, the sounds are much more ambient and there are those lighting effects that were missing out in the PC version.

The PC version is dull and grey, if compared to the PS2 version. Even changing the brightness, which you claim to be the solution, won't help, as there is a different timecyc.dat used in the PC version, so altering the brightness won't be of any help - the city will remain dull. Not to mention that there are no lighting effects (fixed for Steam) and no ambient sounds (unless your computer has the correct hardware).

The Xbox version is too damn clean! Those improved graphics wash away the darkness of the city, and LC is too damn bright! Not to mention improved models of everything, which is, quite honest, makes me feel as if it is another game set in this city, if not for the storyline. And I don't like how they messed up Claude's face. He is less of a badass in that version.

And the Mobile version had two additions that ruined the game as it was originally meant to be played - the map and the ability to restart missions. Not to mention the Xbox graphics being reused.

Note that this is my personal opinion based on personal impressions. I do not own the Xbox version of the game, but I watched the videos a lot. But I own the PS2, the PC and the Mobile versions, so I can tell the difference.

I own the PC and PS2 versions as well, but the differences don't stand out that much at all to me, they are there but passable. As for no lighting in the PC version (It still had a lot, but not everywhere), that can be fixed with mods or like you say, the Steam version.

Another difference would be one of Asuka's missions in the PC version, they changed the snipers from The Mafia to Cops (But they still use the Mafia model). But even then, the mission still feels the same. Another would be the camera is much easier to move in the PC game, you can move it around Claude as you move him instead of stopping to go in first person to look around.

A lot of games have only minor versions compared to one another but still essentially are the same game. I won't deny the differences, I just think whatever difference is there is only small and up to the player as to what ones they prefer. I used to play the PS2 version as I didn't have a proper computer for years, but now I don't play it on my PS2 much, just prefer the PC version. Like you say, it's duller. It's foggier and darker and just overall feels more dystopian. But only at night, the day time feels nice, lots going on, full of cars and peds...night time is too but with that dingy feeling plastered all over it.

That depends on which version of the game you have, I assume you mean "Under Surveillance". In version 1.0, the people in the black van are from the FBI I believe, in version 1.1 they are Mafia members which they were supposed to be. Maybe it is the other way around, I can't really remember, but it is fixed either way.

@OP: Glad to see that you're enjoying the game so far. smile.gif

Does the PS2 version have trails? On PC, if you enable trails the game loses some of its color. It looks a bit more blueish, but I like that. It makes the game look better in my opinion. Ambient sounds work just fine on PC. You just have to select the right sound driver in the sound options (use a software one for the best compatibility).

I get the best sound with Miles one, but it may depend on the hardware indeed.

Overall, I'm very satisfied with my purchase. Some thoughts as I hit the 21 mission completed mark (I just saw Catalina again for the first time):

* Wow, Saints Row didn't just steal the general scheme like most GTA clones. They flat out stole *EVERYTHING* up to and including the silent protagonist and minigames.

* Combat is the part I dislike the most, which is really-really strange but I find it much better to run over people than try to shoot them.

* I really like the fact you can blatantly cheat in this game like putting buses in front of the Turismo race and am sad you can no longer do that.

* The introduction was really-really good.

* Liberty City is obviously very different from GTA IV but several parts look close enough it's kind of fun to "spot the similarities."

* As mentioned, I like Claude's character's look. I also confess a certain fondness he doesn't whine about being a criminal.

* I regret the fact I don't get to work for the Triads but I imagine they're not inclined to help me after I murdered so many hundreds of them.

* I have mixed feelings regarding Maria. The graphic limitations kind of give her an uncanny valley effect (see TV tropes) and I don't know enough about her personality yet to care. Is she a love interest? GTA doesn't have that many I think and they all work out horribly.

Well, except for Tommy, and he has his work in porn shoots.

* I am curious what sort of mods people have done for this game. It seems like a lot could be done because it's a very free-form game.

* In my 'cheat save' I've got to say that cheating in this game is more fun than in any other game. Maybe because the car handling is so difficult there's something fun running around in a tank.

* I like the Leone family. Very nicely developed characters.
