What hardware to get for GTA V?

I've never owned a console, so I'm wondering what's the cheapest option to play GTA V.

I'm not interested in other games, so extra HD space is not an issue. Preferably, I'd want to avoid extra fees for GTA Online.

Thanks in advance!

Even though i'd be getting it on Xbox before PC gets released, i'd recommend the PS3 + GTA V Bundle, its a good deal for a starter like yerself.

Where you from?

US? or Germany? i can't make out what abbreviation you used.

I'm a PC player and I bought a PS3 for 120€ on ebay, it's the cheapest option that you got to play it day one.

Cheapest new PS3? The 12GB flash based Super Slim: http://blog.us.playstation.com/2013/08/20/...vailable-today/ - $199 US

I've heard unfavorable things about the super slim so probably a CraigsList regular Slim or Fat PS3 would be cheaper and more reliable. Another option is to get one of the bundles for the 250GB or 500GB super slims that can be found between $250 - $300. Most new versions are the Super Slims. Around here, I can find plenty of sub $200 PS3s on CraigsList.

As an example of the power of CraigsList, I just checked and saw an original 40GB PS3 with 3 games and 2 controllers for $120.

Is the PS3 bundle a gamestop exclusive, or is it also expected to be available through other retailers (like Saturn or Mediamarkt in Germany)?

I assume that'd still require some sort of additional external storage?

Thanks for all your replies!

Cheap secondhand phat PS3 and a cheap secondhand HDD just to be on the safe side, I got a 160gb for £20 the other day and had it fitted and running the xmb within an hour, That would be my suggestion smile.gif

So in principle, both Xbox and PS3 would work with any retail external USB drive/stick?

I'm not sure it would. If running from the disk, it requires about 8GB to install. I don't know how much additional space, if any, would be required to actually do the install. Additional storage would also be needed if you were doing the digital version. It would not be useful for anything other than one major game at a time. You really would be better off with a larger bundle or a used PS3 in most instances. I don't know enough about the 12GB version to know it's limitations.

Not having an Xbox I couldn't really say but I think you can store game files on a flash drive on the Xbox probably best with a reputable name though like Sandisk, But XBL costs, PS3 can have save files put on a flash drive for backup only I think, But the HDD is just a standard laptop harddrive with the software downloaded onto a flashdrive from the playstation website.

Whatever your friends play on. PSN is Free but Xbox Live is a better service, but it costs.

I guess I'd prefer to not be forced to subscribe to a Microsoft service.

And yeah, from what it looks, 12 GB PS3 + external storage + GTA V vs. 500 GB PS3 GTA V bundle is not a huge difference in price (unless second hand).

Console pricing is confusing, I have to admit...

The GTA V PS3 Bundle is the best value. GTA V comes free with the system with a 500GB Hard drive.

If you don't want pay for or use Xbox LIVE, have way more than enough space for all your games and such and not pay extra for GTA V on top of a new system, this bundle is the best way to go. On top of that buying systems second hand is always shady. I basically go by the rule that used systems don't have a shelf life at all because you never know what could go wrong with them.

I got it this way:

ps3 superslim 500 gb - $250

gta v ps3 - $50

so $300... pretty cheap if you ask me for such a great game

If it comes from a specialist second hand electrical store like cex or cash converters where they test everything first you should be abit safer though, Also hence why I suggested an extra HDD to be on the safe side smile.gif

No that's enough for the mandatory install on PS3. It only downloads about 7 or 8GB.

I honestly don't know in that regard because even though it was announced at E3 by Sony thmselves, the details could differ by region. However, as linked there, if it's 300 EUR at Gamestop, that's the price everywhere else. But yeah I would go with that.

No worries. This is the official explanation of how it works for both systems:

"Grand Theft Auto V is the largest and most ambitious game we have yet created, and takes full advantage of every ounce of processing power available in the current generation of consoles. In order to provide the best possible experience for such a massive and detailed world, the game will have installation requirements on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation®3 systems. For Xbox 360, Grand Theft Auto V will ship on two discs; Disc 1 will be used for a one-time mandatory install and Disc 2 will be used to play the game. After the install, players will be able to enjoy both Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online without any need to switch discs.

This initial install will require an Xbox 360 Hard Drive or an external 16GB USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of free space. If using a USB flash drive it must be at least USB 2.0 with a minimum 15mb/s read speed and formatted for Xbox 360 use. A new USB flash drive is recommended to ensure optimum performance.  For PlayStation®3, the game ships on one disc and will install content as soon as you insert the game. The install is roughly 8GB, and players will be able to play as soon as the install is complete."

Source: Rockstar Asked & Answered.

Oh & I wouldn't be swayed by the fact that almost every screenshot, video & preview demo is from PS3. Sony has some sort of deal with Rockstar, as you'll notice that a lot of advertising only has the PS3 logo on it. They will probably be indistinguishable from one another. Also, take into consideration what controller you'll prefer.

Universal mate, Mediamarkt has it as well wink.gif

Its a good deal, but like said before if you go buy things seperate you might be a bit cheaper.. but the bundle includes everything so its good value and a one stop shop.

Thanks for all the info, really helpful!

Mediamarkt has the 12 GB PS3 + GTA V for 254 EUR, so that seems like a pretty good deal (given that European prices are usually higher than US prices).

The game is about 18GB so you'll need to get a bigger hard drive.
