VelliHoncho
In Just Cause 2, it takes 12-17 minutes to cross the whole map with the fastest jet, which is the fastest vehicle in the game. You can swim underwater, fly really high and explore the wilderness which has destructible tress if you crash into them hard enough. The only downside is that the map is lifeless. Yah the map is big and everything but there are no NPC's, animals or events filling up that space so the vast majority of the map is left untouched by everyone but you. All the NPC's only stay near civilization and they dont do anything. Also the textures in Just Cause 2 are copied and pasted throughout different locations(not important). Overall the map is amazing and a lot of fun the explore. In GTA 5, it is said that the map is to be bigger then GTA SA, RDR and GTA 4 combined. Unlike Just Cause 2, GTA 5's map is full of life and different interactions. NPC's will be doing their own thing and they go as far as farming outside the city. there will be natural events such as storms, you can explore underwater and the map will be fairly big too. Also i'm sure there will be a lot of unscripted and scripted things to do in every location in GTA 5. I think Just Cause 2's map will still be bigger but, I think GTA 5's map will be better. Here is a map comparison! I removed the old image bcause it was inaccurate but you still get this. Edited August 22, 2013 by Mchasner

Nun0567
Those maps are way off scale and the JC2 map has randomly generated trees, no detail, repetitive pedestrians and feels empty

Doctor_Baconator
JC2 was big, but the vast majority of it was trees and plants and empty space. GTA 5 will probably be smaller, but with more stuff packed into it.

All the NPC's only stay near civilization and they dont do anything. ...que? This isn't true. NPCs are outside civilisation, and if you actually looked they do do things, just not to the level of, say, GTA. which has destructible tress ...and a lot more that's destroyable than that. Though you're right in saying Just Cause two is bigger but shallower, but remember how old it is =P Plus I think Just Cause 2's map will have a wider range of areas simply because it's larger. Very large desert, forest, swampland, city and mountainous region, mysterious island, river delta, mountainous farmland, scattered island, glacier, frozen lake etc. which simply can't fit to the scale of V. MintBerryCrunch
I read in an interview that the GTA 5 map might not be the biggest game map ever made but it's definitely the richest with interactive content and eye candy instead of being filled with empty spaces. I'd take content over size any day. Sounds like the GTA 5 map is probably the winner here.

Fail_At_GTA
Why do people always use that horribly inaccurate map comparison picture? Burnout Paradise is a lot smaller than GTA San Andreas, yet they try to make it look massive. I've played both games and I can tell you that one building in Burnout Paradise isn't as big as 4 blocks in GTA San Andreas.

jamieleng
Congratulations on stating the obvious. JC2's map is huge & it's size is matched only by its blandness and repetitiveness. Sure there were a few cool locations like the Space Center launch pads, the dome thing & a couple more I can't remember off hand, but everything inbetween was Yawnsville. Every square metre of V's map has been scrutinized by more than one developer, many times over the last 4-5 years. I actually feel sorry for them, because they must be sick of seeing it by now. We will still be discovering things in many months & the meanings of some references in the game, years later.

fitbikesbmx
JC 2 has a cool map, lots of variety, and its beautiful. GTA V won't be anywhere near as big but it will be packed with a lot more detail and things to do. JC 2 is without a doubt larger, but GTA V will be better. Just my 2 cents . zzzsyk
I only play JC2 because of this mod: It's actually pretty fun to fly over those mountains. I hope there will be a mod to do this on GTA V, when it comes to pc... hopefully

DJ_McLovin
JC2 was big b/c it was supposed to mimic an island nation. It's actually larger than some nations in the world believe it or not. As a result, the map is not as detailed or immerse because of its size. In this case, quantity won out over quality. GTA V is based on LA and SoCal so it will be much smaller and more "condensed", thus we will have more immersion and details. In this case, quality won over quantity. RedDagger
I think GTA V map will be bigger, no doubt! It's gonna be the biggest map of time. Are you serious? Of course it's not even going to be bigger than Just Cause 2, but all time? Really? Let me remind you that 1. Just Cause 2 is bigger and 2.Fuel is 5560 Km^2, or 14400 square km - 120km either side. Think about that for a sec. Edited August 22, 2013 by RedDaggerXL
Bronxsta
Quality vs quantity JC2 is probably bigger, but it's nothing but a playground for your crazy stunts. Rockstar knows how to give its world character and feel like living places. And the map will be more dense, plus all the stuff to do and random encounters and wildlife
Poker2012chu
GTA V's map is probably going to be about the size of the southwestern large island of Panau (JC2's setting and map) plus a mile or two in all directions, but that's just my bet. You can still do a lot with that space if R* fills GTA V with many details (which they will).
Eutyphro
I'm going to make a topic: which has a better map GTA V or Pokemon Blue? GTA V has Mount Chilliad but it does not have Pallet Town. hmmm, interesting.
PHOENIXZERO
Dumb topic, of course GTA V isn't going to be even remotely close to the size of JC2, it'll be something like 1/10th the size if we're lucky. However it's going to be a much richer, better looking environment. That's not really saying much, those countries are very, very small. JC 2 is massive for a video game but in the real world 400 square miles isn't that much, the county I currently live in here in Michigan is about 500 square miles. Of course it's all about scale. willstaruss123
GTA V map ill be 5x bigger than GTA IV map. It will have more detail than any game and the only other map I can think of that has so much detail is Skyrim. A bigger map is not always better. I would have been ok with a small map but with lots of things to do and a real ecosystem.
Arran B
Dayum. Reading this topic has kinda made me miss JC2. I sold the f*ckin' thing ages ago. That was a fun game to f*ck about in, go nick a jet and crash into sh*t whilst high. 'twas a laugh. But as many people have stated, the map was overly big and so boring.
