Question about monetizing GTA V Let's Play Videos

Would there be any copyright issues in monetizing GTA V Lets Play videos on youtube?

I havent uploaded that many gameplay videos for other games, but anyway when I did, sometimes Youtube let me monetize it and sometimes it said I didnt have copyright so it didnt let me monetize

Also for some games the publisher has a page where it says explicitly that you are allowed to monetize on youtube. For example Blizzard Entertainment. So when I uploaded a Diablo 3 video and youtube didnt let me monetize it, I sent youtube a link to that page and then usually youtube ok'd it for monetization after they read that page. Does Rockstar have similar thing where they say you are allowed to monetize?

As long as you put your commentary on the videos you should be safe, at least thats how the majority of big youtubers do it .

Worst case R* could take down your videos, whether they do that is a different story. Just read all the small print on the first page of the booklet, you'll see that most things happening on YouTube are quite illegal, but don't have any consequences whatsoever.

There shouldn't be a problem, Rockstar has been very good with this in the past, So unless something changed very recently, You should be good.

You're streaming copyrighted content, so you might run into issues

If you earn money then rockstar take legal action (beyond removing te videos) you may have to pay back your earnings

The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.

That is a bunch of horsesh*t if i ever read one . A lot of people do let plays for almost all video games and nothing happens to them, why would they when it is basically free advertising .

List of what you CAN NOT do:

Pre-Release Footage: No pre-release leaked footage of any kind: Any posting of in-game footage from leaked copies of the game prior to its official release date will be taken down, regardless of how the game was obtained.  This includes "early unboxing" videos.

Spoilers: Posting video showing the ending of the game, pure cutscenes or any other big reveal in the story. It's ok to show cutscenes as part of a larger play-through (or in a narrated ‘Let’s Play’ type video) but isolated videos of the game's cinematics will be removed.  If you are unsure if what you want to post is considered a spoiler, please contact [email protected] and describe exactly what scene you are wondering about and in what context the scene would appear.

In-game Entertainment: Things like the TV shows and comedy performances in Grand Theft Auto IV, or the silent movies in Red Dead Redemption. We prefer fans to experience these in the context of the game's world, so any posting of these in isolation will be flagged for removal.

So basically, don't upload a thing before GTA V is officialy released, don't upload just cutscenes, don't upload mayor story reveals (character's death etc.) and don't upload in-game TV shows. Also, artist may have the right to claim you're using their content from songs via the radio, so I would suggest you turn that off during your let's play. The 'pre-release footage' probably also goes for DLC.

i recomend to turn off the radio when you are in cars but i don't think it's necessary, for example, i've done a let's play of saints row the third on my channel and at certain moments you could hear Kanye Wests Power song and i didn't recieve any copyright claims on it so i was able to monetize it

i think that if the song is in a video game you can monetize the gameplay of that game, but i'm not entirely sure about that

My only real concern is with the radio. I really, really want to be able to play with the radio on at all times during my first playthrough. My first playthrough is going to be recorded, of course, so...

As long as you don't play the music while you are recording, you should be fine.

Adding in elements that you made, i.e. commentary, videos of you playing, etc,... will put the video in the domain of a "parody" or something similar, and you'll be fine.

The worst that youtube can do is block the video and ask you to remove it.

Commentate over the videos, DON'T show spoilers or copyright music and you'll be fine. I messaged this to R* a few months back and they said they don't mind people uploading videos but they take down those that put spoilers up because quote - We want people to experience them themselves instead of having it shown on the internet - unquote.

As with all games it completely depends on R*'s view on it. I think for the first month or so you should avoid it as most devs take videos down at the time to keep spoilers off the web until people have the time to get and beat the game, but after that you should be fine.

Get a real job ya lazy bum

Who said this is his job? And what defines a "real job"? How is making youtube videos different to making movies or music videos? Or creating television advertisements? I bet you'd classify those as "Real jobs".

You should actually just ignore people who say that confused.gif

People just can't see people sitting down and playing video games for the internet being a "real job" despite that fact that most of the big youtubers that do make it their job actually put a sh*t ton of work into it.

I think IV videos with story missions and such weren't able to be kept on YouTube until last year dude lol.
