dee8ball
Considering gta v will have three playable characters and it probably won't be a one off gameplay feature i was wondering how multiple characters will effect the future of grand theft auto and other open world video game franchises. Will the term "grand theft auto clone" finally die due to grand theft auto differentiating itself amongst other open world video games. Will other open world video game franchises start using three protagonists and giving people who use the term "grand theft auto clone" a chance to say "haha i told you so". Or will rockstar just drop the three characters feature due to having to relearn how to use next gen technology. What do you think? The original poster realizes that he is completely retarded. lectoryo
I'm sure it'll be interesting. I am hoping eventually they change it up though. Don't just keep putting 3 main chaactersin the game because you did it last time. If the new title calls for just one character...then do that. I really don't care. As long as there's a point to it. Doctor_Baconator
If it works well (most probably will) then this may set a precedent for the next hopeful clone, and also a way for Rockstar to add differing layers of depth to any future games. RicsiHUN
I think that in the future R* will use the feature "More as one Protagonist". With this feature the "Gameplay" have a new meaning. And I believe that other games will use this feature too. It would be nice to see it in Saints Row or in Battlefield, etc etc.
Karato2300
It'll probably be an on/off thing. The next game might just give us a single dude again, while another might just have two guys. It's obvious this all depends on the story, as Franklin and Trevor are foils to Michael, and all three will play off one another. Granted, having multiple protags does allow for them to put in missions that can fit for one character, while not making us go "wait, isn't the character usually against that?" RandomNoun
The next Red Dead game could benefit, I think. It could end with a three-way standoff. Nice.
malcolmfunktion
Am I wrong in saying that R* aren't 100% correct in claiming that the introduction of the 3 character dynamic stuff is something that's never been done before. It has hasn't it? Desert Storm series used a 4 character platoon (controlled by you) that was an awesome gameplay experience, I loved it. Setting the sniper in position while the chap with the machine gun runs in etc etc. Fair enough, the characters stood their like gob sh*tes when you weren't controlling them but its still the same thing, no? Because I had SO much fun for years with the Desert Storm games I was real excited to hear about the same approach to a GTA game. Anyone else familier with Desert Storm? Is it not the same situation as GTAV? Unfair to say its never been done before...no?
Andreas
GTAV will introduce multiple protagonists to the GTA series for the first time - although, thinking about it, IV already had three protagonists, but not the way it is done in its successor. That is not some kind of new standard, it is just done for this game. The advantages of more than one protagonist are obvious: you can play the storyline from more than one viewpoint, which increases the replay value substantially, and the story is less likely to become boring or even partly unrelated to the focus of the protagonist(s). There are even popular movies out there that have multiple protagonists. That was one of the problems in San Andreas. There was only a single character you could play, a lot of missions, side-missions and features; in fact, SA had the most missions and features out of all GTA games. But the story didn't make sense the whole time - the initial focus changed over time to something completely different, and certain missions that were supposed to make clear why things are how they are were cut before the game launched. That's one of the disadvantages of only one protagonist. Rockstar managed it with games like III and Vice City to have a good story that makes sense and didn't change into something completely unrelated. And that with only one playable character. If they can do that, then it shows that multiple characters are not a necessity for a good storyline. In short, I think they will keep releasing games with only one protagonist and the same goes for every other developer. If V's system works out well, then we can maybe expect more games with multiple protagonists in the future. Faolan
@Malcolm. Desert Storm may of had playable 4 man sqaud. But they followed you. They never went and did there own thing. Gta's 3 characters will do there own thing when not on a misstion. Thats what makes V a inovation. Its the only game that I know of in a free roam style that has multiple playable characters. That live there lives when not being used and not aim lessly following you 24/
Gigabomber
I'll be chrono trigger's New Game Plus all over again. Every game should have it, few will be able to execute it with the same gusto.

That live there lives when not being used and not aim lessly following you 24/7 Yeah, I understand. R* have definitely taking things further with GTAV and I think its amazing that the characters have an AI built in and the fact that they can actually do a job when your not playing the other 2 is amazing and then live their lives and all is brilliant. I just remember being blown away by the ability to execute missions in Desert Storm by utilizing each character as effectively as possible. Like I mentioned, needing covering fire so I would then quickly switch to my sniper (like the gtav demo), then I would switch to the guy with the C4 to clear the path and so on...I honestly think that R* have IMPROVED on this type of dynamic gameplay idea. Which is great, because its awesome! But i think its worth mentioningor at least giving a little credit to desert storm creaters. Also, the characters in desert storm didn't follow you(unless you hit the "re-group" option) , it was up to you to juggle the 4 of them effectively to complete the mission! I'm just mentioning this because from the start of the whole "wow, you switch between 3 players" reaction I just used to think, hang on, desert storm had that idea and yeah, it was kick ass and its great that R* are taking it to new levels...but it kinda HAS been done before... It sounds like im bitching about R*...im really not haha...cant actually f*cking wait for this awesome game!
