What exactly is "GTA Online"?

While looking at the forums, and reading the hype over GTA Online, I keep asking myself the same un-answered question, what exactly is GTA Online and what is it going to bring to the franchise that say, GTA IV didn't, and why is it being represented as a separate component of GTA instead of just a simple "multiplayer" tag? Now, i know that the reveal will be coming out soon, but before that I'm just curious as to if anyone really knows why they decided to make GTA Online and exactly what it will mean for GTA as a whole. I read that like, 10 page thread about GTA Online, and It's practically all speculation and hardly any real facts.

i think it's probably something rpg style. you advance you abilities, money. maybe team up with you mates and buy property and so on.

This is probably done to indicate GTA V's Multiplayer as a big, separate part of the game.

It is just GTA V multiplayer. The people who have been acting like it's separate are just dumbasses speculating and acting as if it's fact. It's probably just really awesome multiplayer.

There's a REASON for that. It's speculation because none of us KNOW any facts. Hopefully all our questions will be answered Thursday and the ones that aren't will be answered next month.

Rockstar is calling GTA Online revolutionary, that must mean by Rockstar standards that it is really f*cking revolutionary.

I'm assuming its going to be almost like an MMORPG. Large servers allowing many parties to play at once, maybe one group of friends will be doing a race type game while others simply want to free roam? Just my opinion, but I'm overly excited for GTAV trolling if this is the case

Rockstar heavily disagrees judging by GTA O having its own name and logo.

A revolutionary multiplayer evolved from IV like never seen before. The improvement will be like GTA 2 to GTA 3.

I originally thought it would be you join lots of other players on the GTA map and just kill each other. It really didn't appeal to me at all because I'm not really an online player. I do single player campaigns for every game I own, and that's it.

But then something struck me as being odd. Why would someone like Rockstar go out of their way to create a special video for it? This can't be the usual "kill everyone you can on the map" crap - that bores the hell out of me! This must be something new and amazing. Maybe it involves doing major co-op heists - who knows. One thing is certain though, I'm psyched up and ready to see the big unveiling this Thursday. If it lives up to the hype and convinces me (which I'm hoping it will) then it I'll buy an XBox Live Gold account specially for GTA V.

Roll on Thursday! smile.gif

This...I fear this. If it's really a seperate thing then it has chance that it'll cost more (monthly fee type of thing)

The amount of hype around it, it has to be good. Otherwise Rockstar fear losing a tonne of creditability.

Just thought of something - maybe you can play all the mini-games against your friends online?

Anyone for a game of golf?

I'm expecting something similar to Red Dead... as that is realistic and will save potential disappointment by getting really hyped up about it. If they announce something truly revolutionary, then I'll allow myself to get really excited and hyped up for it!

I thought it will be just like story mode but online so like DC UNIVERSE online free on psn. Under stand wat I'm trying to say? Play regularly but with people.

Something like APB would be sick. Not the microtransactions and all that, but the general gameplay. Intead of cops v criminals, it should be separate factions, or in this case, the crews. There'd be missions popping up in the open world, such as "street race in southern los santos", you go there and race every other crew, winner gets money. Or perhaps "truck full of stolen goods at the factory district", where every crew is fighting eachother for the truck. Combine that with custom cars with decals, and there's an amazing MP experience right there. The map design needs to be good as well, APB's was good as where the objectives were placed, the map was modelled designed for combat, so there were ladders, high points, alleyways, things like that, instead of fighting in an empty street.

Seems like marketing to me. Since it's technically on the same disc as GTAV, and according to the trailer it is the "multiplayer component of GTAV". So until I see info saying otherwise I'll call it like I see it.

I'm pretty sure there will be at least one or two of the features listed below in GTA Online

You as a resident will have your own home within the world (that can be visited/attacked/robbed)

The police force will be moderators (biggrin.gif)

Prison system will act as a banning mechanism. (could be linked to 'number of days' theory)

There will be a notoriety system where you exchange goods/items/drugs with other players

Gang wars will be a fully fledged feature (linked to Crews)

Turf wars will also be a fully fledged feature (also linked to Crews)

I just don't understand you and your decals. It's the most minor thing within customization. All you do is add frickin stripes which most of them look disgusting anyway. I don't think this would discredit customization if it was in, as a matter of fact, no one would even know about it. I mean sure if it's in, then that's good, there are people that would use it, but it's not going to affect it.

I can't think of the game right now, but I doubt it would be like this, where you just play through "missions" and people can randomly jump in to "help"... but most people would jump in and screw sh*t up on purpose or would just be really bad.

I think it will be like what a lot of others have said, an open world with a lot more to do with your friends and random people like create gangs, play mini games, heists, properties to buy, and special cars.

Three reasons why I am hyped:

1. I have no idea what it offers and I am really curious since they said:

2. Rockstar saying that this will be revolutionary and will do to the MP aspect of GTA what III did to the series (pretty big statement).

3. They are calling it Online instead of the multiplayer mode, it has to offer some new features.

You've got to give R* credit for keeping GTAO under wraps so tightly; we are 35 days away from the release of GTA V and we have yet to find out any major information about the multiplayer!

Bring it on. I am so excited.
