Anybody else think Grand Theft Auto Online should've been introduced in GTA IV? GTA V is like the second GTA now in the 'HD Era' and Rockstar's GTA Online is just now being introduced? Really pumped for Thursday's first, more in-depth look at it but this should've been introduced to us like 5 years ago and in time Rockstar could've experienced with it from 2008 up to now and fix all the nooks and crannys and improved on it to make it even better.

( Off-Topic, but the GTA Online logo is the same exact color as the "Prepare for the explosion" countdown on GTAV.Net. White & red ) Shifty41s_beerhatsmilie2.gif

Would a name change really matter? GTA Online is evolution of GTA IV online so they have been experimenting with it for years. A name change doesn't change that.

I think R* had not got the the funds for GTAO in GTA IV

since there even probably had enough to do making a HD world.

Lock n' Stock

The fact that Rockstar gave GTA V's multiplayer it's own name shows that it'll be much more ambitious.

IV online was their foot in the water.

They didn't have enough time to devote for online. It was their first major console game of the

new generation. There was a lot else to focus on.

Online gaming at the time was just picking up steam too.

Umm... Where on earth did I say "a name change" in my post? notify.gif

Read it a second time...

Why weren't a lot of things utilized in GTAIV?

Because GTAIV was simply a beta test on the new consoles.

The episodes DLC took it to the next level and now GTA V is the true GTA of this generation.

Because it simply wasn't possible at the time.

It's like saying they should have made San Andreas in 2001.

Probably because it was their first game on a new engine (let alone a new system generation), and I find when this happens, the new engine itself (and its graphics) gets most of the attention. Little side things tend to get pushed out (hence why when it first came out, the gaming world was jizzing their pants about how amazing it looked, and now in hindsight, many complain about what it was lacking).

That's what's nice about a game on an already established engine. The engine itself gets some tweaks and upgrades, but most of the dev time can be spent elsewhere, like fun side content & things like GTA V Online.

GTAIV was them just R* dipping their toe in the water. GTAO will be something grander think of the change from GTAII to III and thats how GTAO will be compared to IV multiplayer.

I think GTAO will be similar to RDR multi but it will allow players much more interaction with the world I wouldn't be surprised if all the single player activities were also in GTAO,

On another note, you people are speculating and suggesting way too much.

GTAIV online was very fun when you actually do stuff. Just last night I played a very

tactical version of Team Deatmatch with 3 other friends.

When I say it was tactical, I mean it was awesome. We used the whole map, we used things like interiors and night time to our advantage

planned our next moves. Hid from patrolling enemy helicopters and planned our attacks using stealth.

I'm hoping that on GTA Online you could do things like this instead of only being allowed to do what everyone is speculating.

I hope it isn't leveling up either. I like GTAIV free mode and non rank game modes.

I think most people speculate on the fact that GTA IV was the first GTA for this generation of consoles, and they really wanted to foucs on the single player more so than the multiplayer. They were working with a brand new engine, new physics, new everything really. I got the impression that the online game modes ie free-roam, tdm etc; were a bit half assed, and they just put them in the game just to say "gta iv has online". I think nowadays though, with more and more people getting out of their social comfort zone, more people are playing mp games. So rockstar want to focus more on it this time around i think.

GTA IV's multiplayer was something entirely new for Rockstar. But they went on to perfect it with Red Dead Redemption's multiplayer.

Now when you think of the things that Rockstar did in RDR multiplayer, just imagine what they are going to do for GTA V online.

You don't even know if there are any "nooks" or "crannys", nothing in GTA Online has been confirmed yet.

Exactly. They've just called it GTA Online, rather than GTA V Online. Its not like they didn't have online in IV, and this is a revolutionary experience.

It will just be similar to IV's online game, just in the upgraded world of V...

This

Also Red Dead Redemptions mp sucked because of leveling up and health regen.

GTA IV was the first GTA to have multiplayer so they were just getting on their feet really, but now they've had 6 years with it so GTA Online is the direction they're going in.

In 2008 the entire idea of online multi player was brand new and developers where experemting with the concept. that ment simple modes, and low capacitys

Is this a serious question?

New console, new engine, first big game on a new console and engine.

And for anyone saying that "online gaming was new" or "just started to take off" no, it wasn't. Online gaming had been established, and been huge for several years before GTA IV. Most notably, just after Sony released the Network Adapter in Late 2002. Online gaming was going very strong 6 years before GTA IV was released.

What? No it didn't. Consoles finally got it in a realistic usable manner, but we been playing multiplayer games on PC for 20 years man.

The reason is because crews was not developed yet to support the persistence among "guilds" (crews), social club needed to come further, GTA itself needed to come further, the money needed to be right - many things needed to be lined up. They may even be trying this too early. But we'll see.

Rockstar weren't even experienced with their own RAGE engine back then, let alone next gen consoles.
