v 9 L u k E 4 v
Ok so im not meaning to dis Rockstar because I love everything they do and respect everyone behind the making of the games they do and I have no doubt this game will be just epic but I personally believe that the marketing on this game is very poor. There has hardly been any advertisement's on the tv or even in shops, its not just that they haven't even give us a website yet that's bad one more thing to ad is the fact they haven't showed us a demo now yes I know rockstar never show demos but what's to hide we kind of know most of the things you can do In gta 5 so it would be nice to have a demo showed to us. what do you guys think ? discuss
Mr. Sleepy
They're too confident in their product, and there is a gameplay out there.. "Demo" "Gameplay" same sh*t in my opinion.

Durden
Its good. These murals they're painting act as a constant reminder to pass-byers that GTAV is coming. There have even been a few TV commercials here & there. R*, like all businesses, like to save money. They won't market too much if they think its unnecessary. When the game is releasing in 1-2 weeks, the marketing will no doubt heavily escalate. We'll see launch trailers on TV, ads on even more websites, more murals, etc... Also, one of R*s main marketing assets is news stations on September 16 reporting on GTAV's midnight release & the controversy surrounding the game I expect to see Jack Thompson in a trenchcoat, trying to disguise himself as a local resident, trash talking the game

voltaire
Its standard, the butthurt people make it seem like its worse than it is. You obviously don't know anything about anything. Go have a look at how Ubisoft is marketing Splinter Cell Blacklist. I had no interest in that game until their marketing convinced me other wise. That's how you sell a product. Rockstar's idea of marketing reminds me of Apple's pompous arrogant approach to marketing, that kind of sh*tty attitude of "we don't have to lower ourselves by trying to get the average man on the street to like us, hype will do that for us". I'm getting GTAV but my "butthurt" is aimed at the idea that there are so many normal people who play games but aren't obsessed enough to refresh GTA forums every five minutes or to constantly read gaming blogs, people who get informed about the existence of a specific video game by seeing an ad during a football game on TV who'll pass GTAV by because R*'s idea of marketing is releasing screenshots (who still does that!?) every three weeks and to paint sh*t on the sides of buildings. Jack0711
I think they're trying to let the product do the talking... but that's not going to appeal to some GTA newcomers who have never played it before.

Choco Taco
GTA V doesn't need great marketing because the game sells itself. If you want to determine if Rockstar is good at marketing, it would be better to examine the sales of Max Payne 3.

Marketing doesn't mean sh*t as long as the game is good, just look at Payday 2, marketing is practically non-existant and it's still a great beta game played by millions of people. Let people find the game for themselves, not by shoving trailers and dumb pre-order bonuses down our throat every 5 minutes. Marketing for GTA V is standard and it's doing a good work keeping us hyped.
DaRkL3AD3R
Bad. They need to go back to the old trailer structure, where the trailer is narrated by the actual in-game characters and it's no gameplay videos. These new trailers lose a lot of the theatricality that the old ones had. Now I just feel like I'm watching an infomercial and being sold a product, instead of being excited just to be excited. 73duster
People simply expect WAY too much. When you look at all of the info released so far, it really adds up. Personally, I think they revealed too much info, but they certainly know what they're doing. People who complain about Rockstar's marketing only seem to be concerned with instant gratification. They want more info, and they want it NOW! No amount of info will satisfy them. The bottom line is, GTAV is the most anticipated game of all time, and for Rockstar to spend millions of dollars NEEDLESSLY on a product that sells itself, would be incredibly dumb. Not ONE person can legitimately claim that Rockstar will hurt their sales with their current strategy. This is ALL about people wanting more and more info. Audiophile
Didn't rockstar get a new head in the marketing department a few months ago? Maybe they are shifting their strategies to a word of mouth style? Not sure but I do recall that last summer their head of marketing (who used to work for Apple....so explains all the secrecy) left the company either because he was fired or because he wanted to seek better opportunities. I imagine they already had a marketing plan in place so they are following that as just because your marketing head leaves doesn't mean everything falls apart. You stick to the plan you had in place or the previous plan that worked. I imagine someone is running that department tho... As for the marketing....some people's logic of marketing = R* giving me exactly what I want, when I want it. Marketing is meant to draw awareness for the product/company and so far it's done just that. It is true that the GTA name markets itself since it isn't a new IP but that is precisely why R* can afford a marketing strategy like this and you shall thank them for it when you play the game for the first time and discover things for yourself. Unlike Ubisoft's marketing where they show you every inch of the game before you've even played it. I want to post this again: Casual gamers also aren't following the marketing as closely as we are. They aren't going to sit on a forum or anywhere else and complain that there isn't enough info and R* said "soon" months ago. They don't follow the pre-release info that closely. They generally find out about the game and then take note of a release date and see info when it's big news i.e. trailers. They will generally get really hyped and pay closer attention to the game a few weeks from release (by that point I do believe R* will be going all out with marketing, it seems as if they are saving all the best stuff for last). Of course that may not be every single casual gamer but I do believe that's how the majority operate based on my own experiences with the people around me and games that I am not a hardcore fan of. You can expect the marketing to really ramp up a few weeks before release and I really do feel that R* marketing is holding all of this info that we have left to hear about up until the last possible minute so that when it begins they can keep up satisfied update after update and really reach the casual gamers market. Of "big" pieces of info we have left: 1) Multiplayer reveal which R* told us we will see "soon" mid-May and that they will reveal "soon" at the end of the gameplay video. They responded on the newswire that the reveal will be in August. 2) Interactive website, I believe that someone sent R* a mouthoff email and R* responded that it is coming soon. 3) Next gameplay video. R* wrote on their newswire that the video we already have is the first gameplayy video, implying that more are coming. 4) Launch trailer, which we will get a few days before the September 17th release date I do believe. 5) Maybe one more round of previews to tie into the multiplayer considering how big R* says it is going to be. Think about it, if they reveal all of this now then we will have a blackout from now until release. But if they wait, as sh*tty as it is for us right now, when they do start talking they will keep doing so on a regular basis because of the sheer amount of stuff they still need to release and obviously it's a given marketing will ramp up closer to release.
