Dope_0110
Just start with III and play all of them. 1 and 2 may have provided the groundwork to what will become one of the best franchises but let's be real, a bird-eye camera and 2D sprites with somewhat clunky controls is not something any new age kid will ever be able to adjust to. So just start from III and enjoy.

abczyx
IV San Andreas Vice City III =big gap= II I Picked San Andreas over Vice City because I thought the larger scale and scope was more important to me than the better story and soundtrack that VC had, even if the game was somewhat overstretched in hindsight. III was the most important and ground breaking of them all but putting that aside is comparatively lacking in certain aspects, including story engagement. IV for me is the best overall. The map was pretty big but in particular had incredible detail, and in that latter aspect it was miles ahead of the PS2 era games. The story is more mature and compelling, and I for one preferred the new physics. I didn't rate the EFLC packs but I'd say TBOGT was better than TLAD, and in some ways better than vanilla IV. If V can offer what IV did but expand in scope and perhaps add some of the lunacy that was taken away, which the trailers seem to suggest it will, then I have no doubt it will comfortably slot in to the number 1 position. dangr
For me the best one is GTA San Andreas. It had so many stuff to do, so funny missions and a huge variety of weapons and cars. It also had a huge map for the year that it was released. After San Andreas I would choose GTA IV because of the great plot that it had and the detailed map of it. I also enjoyed Euphoria and RAGE engines. After GTA IV I would put GTA III just because it was a huge leap forward for 3rd person/open world games. Then we have GTA Vice City with its amazing atmosphere and one of the coolest protagonists ever. GTA Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories weren't something new. The only interesting about these games was that we had a chance to see characters from GTA III and GTA Vice City from a different point of view. The same with the Ballad of Gay Tony and the Lost and Damned. In the last two though, I also enjoyed the atmosphere. Especially in TLAD. Vic 2.0
I've only played (and therefore will only rank) the Grand Theft Autos from GTA3 to VCS. #1. Vice City - It's a good combination of what GTA3 did right with what SA did right. Missions were challenging though not impossible (for me, personally), the soundtrack was phenomenal, you could save seemingly countless vehicles and save your game practically anywhere, there was the introduction of the motorcycle, there was plenty of mission (storyline and side) variety, you didn't have to worry about gaining weight or losing muscle!, and it was a generally beautiful game. And hey! I love having two talk radio stations! And I'm sure I left something out! #2. San Andreas - The huge map with no load screens is a delight (crippled as a plus only by the fact that sneaking into one of the other regions before the story takes you there is, erm, a less-than-rewarding accomplishment in many ways); the soundtrack is also amazing (though I can't listen to my rap music when my toddler's in the room, grrrr...); I do like some of the "RPG"-like features such as building your motorcyle, driving, and stamina skills (but I hate having to remember to eat and exercise!); and of course I love flying around in a full-sized, fully functional airplane. Fun stuff. #3. GTA III - I love the environment of Liberty City and will always be nostalgic for it. I also enjoy taking advantage of all the glitches and tricks that make this GTA one of a kind. It may not have as much to offer as the other games in one way, but it has way more to offer in others! #4. Vice City Stories - A return to beautiful Vice City + the ability to swim in the beautiful water + the ability to personalize your assets by choosing what sorts of business to put where. Need I say more? #5. Liberty City Stories - Because it doesn't have most of what I just listed! Though it was enjoyable (I like finally having the ability to cruise around LC with a motorbike), I have a feeling as I get some of the newer games that this one will always be at the bottom of the list

zeppelincheetah
III San Andreas Chinatown Wars (yes I am serious, this game is FANTASTIC. It combines the best of III, 2 and IV and adds sooo much more. Also has a great story!) Vice City The Lost and Damned Liberty City Stories GTA 2 (I wish Rockstar dared to try to do a GTA like this again) The Ballad of Gay Tony IV (story and characters really killed this for me - and the last third of the missions were a bore) Grand Theft Auto London 1969 Vice City Stories (very glitchy, empire building feels too much cut and paste, poor story, bad characters) Played, but never finished (don't think it's fair to rank if I haven't completed them:) London 1961 Advance
Mr Vice City
To rank such awesome games is a challenge for sure. I've not played the 2D games so I'll leave those out. If I was to rank them based on how good I think they are I would say; 1 - San Andreas It built and refined upon the concepts and ideas of the III & VC, expanded the game world dramatically and provided, at the time, an ungodly amount of content and depth to the world. It was arguably the best from a technical perspective to at that point and for me represents by far the most diverse and fun entry of the series. 2 - Vice City I do feel this is perhaps the most keenly balanced and tightest of the III era GTA's and I think this had one of the best story's and cultural take. Personally it's my favorite as it was my first GTA game, introduced me to the 80's (which I now love) and Tommy was such an awesome character. Only the finest of margins seperate this and SA in my mind. 3 - Stories These games were very good games, on PSP they were technically impressive. However they were rough compared to III, VC & SA and lacked that creative magic. 4 - Chinatown Wars Like the stories game's it was really good, particularly for DS. Again, narrow margins separate it from Stories. My main issue with it being it didn't feel enough like a GTA game. 5 - Advance A solid game, let down by a few to many niggles. Worth playing but flawed. Not a high point for GTA but a fun ride. 6 - IV I hate this game. Don't get me wrong it is a very good game, but it has too many flaws to match the high standards of other more illustrious entries, lacks content and depth, has a bland aesthetic and in the name of realism they sucked out the fun completely. The Episodes went someway to rectify this and were better but in my opinion it was too little to late. It never truly felt like a GTA game - and that to me was the biggest problem. I imagine V is going to take over at no.1 soon though. it looks stunning.
