I know a lot of people are debating other cities but is it possible they are hiding Area 51?

Wouldn't be surprised if they were, after all, it is Area 51... But in all seriousness, Area 51 is more suited for a Las Venturas setting than a SoCal setting.

I don't think they will re-use Area 51 or the Big Ear or Li'l Probe Inn. It was a bit of a stretch of the GTA SA plot in the first place and think they will have too many other things in the story, with 3 protags, to go off on that path again. It's too bad, because I liked the creepy mysteriousness of the GTA SA desewrt, and I don't know if Rockstar will be able to give us that sense again.

Probably not Area 51 due to geography, but there's supposed to be a military base in GTA V.

They could do what they did in GTA SA by making the player 'warp' there in a mission after flying to it in a cut scene. In san andreas they did this when CJ went to liberty city.

Possibly, but I'd say it'd be closer to just a regular military base, but with a mission focused on it where you find strange labs and suchlike hidden deep underground, as opposed to it being blatantly obvious it's a top secret research site on the surface when you're just looking at it.

 

Like, on the map, you'll see a military base. When you go to it it's just a normal base (wanted level for entering it etc), however there will be a mission where you discover all its secrets.

I hope so. just because its real life counter part is in Nevada there is no reason why they cant put their Area 69 in a reimagined SoCal desert if they wanted to, its a videogame they can do whatever they want.

Because it's a game and if they want to put a single, fairly small, thing from Nevada in the game then why the hell not! It's not like they're suddenly putting LV in so-cal.

Edwards AFB in CA has a JPL unit and they do some crazy things. You could easily have the same hijinx as Area 69 (although not too many real military bases have guard towers and search lights).
