G D
To the two above: Xbox 360 doesn't have a 720p limit, it can do 1080p as well, many XBLA games are 1080p as well as some small amount of retail games. Time and time again, GTA IV was a shoddy port on PS3 and PC, look at the latest Rockstar Game, Max Payne 3, using the newer RAGE engine that GTA V is using, it's been optimized out of the ass, MP3 ran at 720p on both and handled framerates much better than GTA IV ever could, and the PC version was amazing! Alot of people thought the PC version of Max Payne 3 was a very good port... It is a very good port ( ). Just don't let vRam fool you! It was developed separatly. I hope Rockstar do the same treatment for you guys, sure I dislike the ignorant PC Elite Masta Race but the rest are cool. I laugh every damn time i see THIS avatar. This should be nominated for best avatar...
V8VANTAGE
All console games run at 720p or below at the moment. The consoles + your TV then upscale to 1080p if you have a Full HD TV. So, GTA V for PS3/Xbox 360 will run at around 720p natively. POTENTIAL PC and next gen versions will run at the full fat 1920x1080 complete with textures 2 or 3x higher resolution, making the game look like the screenshots we've been getting. EDGE96
Barely any console games on PS3 or 360 run at 1080p. Hell, a lot don't run at 720p. The hardware simply isn't good enough. Because of the size of the game it'll also probably not run at 720p on current gen consoles. Next gen versions will likely run at 1080p (if it's ever ported) and a PC version would run at what ever the user sets it at. 360 will be in 720p. Not sure about PS3 in this case. Don't be soft. Fair enough, RDR and GTAIV were not as good on the PS3 as they were on the Xbox, but GTAV is being developed on the PS3, so you can probably say that Xbox won't look as good as PS3 in this case. All I know is I constantly run at 1600x1050 resolution with all my games on PC. Not sure what that even translates to when it comes to TV resolutions. Im assuming it is a bit higher. Did a little googling---this seems like a pretty good list of game resolutions--- The original post is old but it has been updated with newer games-- http://forum.beyond3d.com/showthread.php?t=46241 Perhaps this will settle some of this. LaDispute
A lot of people don't seem to know how the inside of consoles work, they may be on years old hardware, but they are specifically made to withstand a time period 10 years or so, the hardware put in them are mostly custom and can be optimised greatly increasing the power of the console when needed or developed on, they are quite powerful. Also no one here needs to worry, Rockstar know what they are doing and the game will run and look gorgeous come September 17th.

Carter_Intense
As someone who works in electronics, please note that games run at 720p or 1080i. 1080i is interlaced pixels, breaking down the image does not give you the resolution as a 1080p picture. It's just the same as a 720p picture, but clearer. The only thing that PS3's 1080p resolution runs for is the Blu Ray player built inside the console. While the games themselves use a Blu Ray disc, because of the software built inside the disc and because it's running constantly, it's resolution is only outputting at 720p. While most TV's are either 720p or 1080p (nowadays), having a 1080p does not necessarily mean that the picture will be better than someone with a 720p picture. This game's resolution will be at 720p, mostly because it's Rockstar, they love making games for Sony then porting it out to other systems. Mainly because they love working with more space on the Blu Ray disc rather than the DVD disc that XBox has.

zombie elvis
WHen will there be 2160p? That's known as 4k (They started counting horizontally and rounding up for some reason). Some PC games can run it but the displays aren't popular yet, 4k TVs are starting to be pushed but they're expensive right now. Next gen consoles can potentially support it if they think it's worth it. Edited August 11, 2013 by zombie elvis
