Why San An Was The GOAT GTA & IV sucked

Yes everyone knows SA is better (and if you think otherwise then you're just a PC peasant who only cares about graphics). But like a lot of people are saying... you're comparing a generation's last game to a generation's first game. For the comparison to be fair, SA would have to be compared to V (and no that doesn't mean start comparing now because V isn't even out yet).

Look at it this way, every feature the 2 games share, IV did every single on of those features, better.

 

Except Swimming, swimming is the only mechanic SA did better than all else.

If your talking gameplay and graphics wise, IV is leaps and bounds ahead of it. Now if your talking mission design, characters, side missions, weapons, and map, SA takes the cake. IV (and the EFLC) had the worst characters, barely anyone was likeable, or memorable. IV had too simplistic of mission design/side activities (even though the EFLC improves upon this ALOT). I'm not gonna lie, i find myself playing the EFLC a ton more then IV. I think its camparble in that

GTA IV = III

EFLC = Vice City

V = San Andreas

I expect San Andreas never to come up again after Sept. 17

San andreas was great in its time. But now it is kind of dated. GTA 4 was a major step forward and into a new direction with its realistc approach and dark theme.

However, it will look dated to GTA 5.

 

And when GTA 5 is out, all these topics will stop and everyone will just have fun. VC, SA and IV will still be great games which provided unique entertainment in their time.

 

I don't get all the hate between you guys. It's the same freaking game franchise and each title offers entertainment and fun in its own way. No need to hate on a particular game this intense way.

I don't think Rockstar, as good as V is going to be, can ever recreate that magic Vice City made. To play Vice City when it came out in 2002 was probably the best gaming experiance I'll ever have.

I know what you mean. I felt a unique experience with VC too back in 2002. But back then everything was new, it was the first 3D GTA to me, then the 80's theme, which I loved since I was born in the 80's and remembered a lot of things, colors, music, the way people dressed.

 

However, San Andreas went into another direction I appreciated it. The hood, the customization, more possibilities.

 

And GTA IV captured me even longer than the other two games. Every year since it is out I have been playing it. 5 freaking years.

Yup, Grand Theft Auto IV, one of the most expensive tech demos ever, that took four years to develop. Rockstar has already stated why they chose Liberty City as the setting, and it is so much more living and detailed than San Andreas. OP, you clearly have no idea of what you are talking about.

That's just nostalgia. V will most likely be a much better game than Vice City by all objective measures, and also than San Andreas (my favourite game of all time). But nostalgia is strong, so San Andreas will always be my favourite. In your case that's Vice City. That's very understandable.

I agree. I mean, personally my favorite will forever be Vice City, but I understand that is because it was the first time I ever played GTA, the fact that I played it at an internet caffe and bought it 8 months before I actually bought the PC that could play it. The colors, the music.. it will forever be my favorite.

 

But, I also understand if I look at things realistically SA was much better than VC, it added many important gameplay features like moving while sneaking and aiming, free camera rotation etc... and also added a bunch of new activities so technically SA is better in every possible way. I still prefer VC as my favorite, but accept that better GTAs have come after it.

 

People like OP just don't seem to be able to judge objectively. It's very hard to compare IV to SA, one has more features and a diverse map that will give much joy to casual rampages, another is a much better depiction of a city with gameplay features are much better fleshed out then previously. So it's about preference as we can't objectively measure those. Some will prefer more things to do, others will prefer better mechanics even though it brought less variety.

 

But to hate on IV this much just because they prefer SA is idiotic and fanboyism at it's worst (vice versa applies too but I don't see those topics coming up).

I agree with you Dope_0110. Though I find arguing that the gameplay updates and better graphics of IV outweigh the bigger more varied map and features of San Andreas hard to do. If you'd include EFLC with IV then I could see it, but IV by itself I can't. But I guess it all ends in a matter of taste...

No, no.. I never said either one is better or outweighs another. As I said, and you said earlier too, it's impossible to measure them objectively where we can sit and say:

 

SA had: Flying +3 points, Diving +1 pts.. etc.. do the same for IV and compare the results. It's impossible as it comes down to taste and I never took either side in this argument which is better, to me they're just two great games. I don't have to come to a conclusion which is better and I can live a long and peaceful life still.

 

I just don't like these narrow minded ''everuthing wuz bad in XX game, and evruthang is awesooomm in gamez I like'' reasons that many people in this topic use to say which is better.

Yeah. I understood what you said, but my point was that SA was just better than vanilla IV if you look at the features and the map and the stuff that IV had better that I mentioned... But they are very incomparable I guess, point taken. Maybe it's just my SA nostalgia bias.

 

I agree with you that in the end it's the experience that counts, and that can't be objectified in terms of "so much more pixels here + so much faster framerate here + extra feature there + 30 points", and it all remains abstract and subjective. So I'll take back my "SA > IV objectively" statement. Point taken.
