The biggest reason GTAIV is so heavily criticized is because it felt claustrophobic. The lack of any countryside or large area to provide contrast to the metropolis that is Liberty City, is a MAJOR hindrance to GTAIV. Had there been a large place that gave you a chance to get away and see something DIFFERENT, it would CERTAINLY be appreciated more. This is where San Andreas was not only great, but REVOLUTIONARY, almost on the same level as when GTAIII came on the scene. San Andreas felt MASSIVE, on a scale never even imagined before. Every place was drastically different from the next. GTAIV did NOT suck. It was a VERY good entry to the GTA series that introduced a completely revamped generation. The innovation from that game brought us the truly incredible Red Dead Redemption. GTAV FEELS a lot like San Andreas, and that is a GREAT thing. I just didn't go into detail about the flaws. If you mean the story was the downside of the game compared to the other's I think most would disagree. Reason I didn't like IV was because there is only so much messing around an empty city making my own game before it gets stale. Especially after San An offered so much The graphics were atrocious. even for back then (I get there are reasons for that but it doesn't change the fact) it had this horrible haze effect and washed out look going on. You had people phoning you up every 2 minutes to go bowling The only thing it had going for outside the story was the driving mechanics and rag doll. I refer to you calling it a "tech demo". In which you believe it was more about Rockstar getting used to using the new engine and failing. Correct? You're basically saying the game sucks because it was made too early, and thus led to bad design choices and features from previous GTA games missing. However that could be use in defense of the game. I could say GTA IV was "different" from GTA SA because it was the first HD GTA game ever made, with a more complex engine and mechanics. While GTA SA was made much later in its gen with more familiar tech, and therefore of course had more fleshed out features. You're practically comparing two different things. Graphics, storyline, gameplay, that's all debatable. Personally I thought the graphics were pretty impressive, the story was engrossing, and the gameplay was fun. But hey, to each their own. I used to love that game, and I still do. It's a good game, but this fanboyism is what would make any fan on SA like me say f*ck that game, just to spite you who hate on IV for no damn reason. Yes, it reduced the number of activities and took out countryside. But gave so much more, finally they had realistic animations, especially when hitting people with a car. Finally they had a cover system. Finally you could shoot out of a car freely... and dozens of other details that were introduced or completely overhauled and 1000% better than 3D era GTA. Welcome to 2013, we know that San Andreas was awesome, just shut up about it already. If you had moved on from the game years ago, you'd have noticed how dated it is today compared to not only GTA IV, but also to modern games in general. -Death means you lose all of your weapons. -Trip skip only takes you to the beginning of the mission. -Horrible draw-distance that really does take away from the atmosphere of being in a large open world. -Cars are much more fragile than in GTA IV. -An unfocused and forgettable plot, saved only by celebrity cameos. However, I do believe that GTA SA is a slightly better game. However, in my opinion, the complete package (GTA IV and GTA EFLC together) is basically on par with GTA SA and Red Dead Redemption. GTA IV does have a lot of room for improvement, but I don't think it deserves as much hate as it gets. By modern standards and without taking nostalgia into account, GTA IV is still better than well over half of the GTA titles that were released.
