Most cars that drag race with a lot of horsepower don't have manual transmissions. It's hard to build a manual that can take high horsepower without breaking. Besides, even on the lower horsepower end it still makes sense since we can customize/tune the cars now. Hell, people used to drag race online all the time on part IV at the airport and you knew instantly if you were gonna win or lose based on which car you each had since you couldn't tune them. And considering there are crap loads of videos of people doing just that on youtube, I bet they either do have a track, or at the least made sure there is another long and straight road for us drag racers. Serious drag racers run manual transmissions. actually very few run manuals most gms for example run a th350 or th400 unless they have stepped up to overdrive. then a highley built 200-4r or 700r4 the first being better usually is used. mopar 727 tq flight. ford c6 etc.... very few people like a muncie to drag race due to lack of a trans brake deep stall and usually the auto shifts faster and when built right is probablly stronger. none of your top nhra cars run a stick that i know of and lets not forget even back in the day the powerglide ruled the strip.
