Durden
... ... ... Not only have R* already explained why (long story short, its such a vast improvement from IV), but you are undoubtedly a troll or a little kid for implying GTAV is SA v2. poklane
Each numbered GTA represents a huge leap of the series in terms of gameplay, features and overall technology, not where it's set. GTA 2 wasn't in Liberty City either, it was in Anywhere City. This, 100%. Most games do this, and some make the numbered have 1 story, and the spin-offs their own stories. GTA 2 wasn't in Liberty City either, it was in Anywhere City. Thats true, but still, where was that amazing lrap between GTA 1 and 2? Only difference is that GTA 2 takes place in the future with slightly better graphics. Otherwise they were quite alike. GTA 3 - First 3d GTA GTA 4 - First HD GTA GTA 5 - First GTA with biggest map ever, with most opportunities etc... make sense. Actually I've no clue about GTA 2, I've never played it the jump from I to II was still nice...I'd much rather play II than I...but you should stop nitpicking..this was waay early in the series and things were just starting out
Choco Taco
Each numbered GTA represents a huge leap of the series in terms of gameplay, features and overall technology, not where it's set. The leap from IV to V doesn't seem any bigger than the leap from Vice City to San Andreas.

CryptReaperDorian
Because it's the start of a new era. But it isn't part of a new era. It's the same era/universe/whatever that started with GTA:IV. Rockstar just call their GTAs whatever the hell they want. There are no rules and even if there were rules, Rockstar can break them. This is as correct as it gets. R* is much more unpredictable than what people on this forum want to believe. There's no "patterns", or at least not any more. wwinterj
R* could have called it GTA: Penis everywhere and you wouldn't be able to do a thing about it. I guess the numbered ones in the series do something major with the game to change how it originally was. The biggest been GTA 3 from GTA 2 with the whole 3D from 2D jump. GTA IV made the HD jump and GTA V changes the way we play the game with adding three protagonists and the mission structure. The three protagonists thing is something very unique and no doubt will set the bar yet again. I think quite a few developers will try to recreate it in there games. Ben73
I also thought a numbered GTA always had to be in LC. HAD? Where do these rules come from. I thought we had freedom, I thought this was merica. Isn't this merica? Oh Im sorry I thought this was merica.

Miss Darko
Ultimately the reason is that R* felt it deserved the title of GTA V, whatever that means. Was it because they felt GTA: Los Santos didn't work because it's not just set in Los Santos? Or was it because it was enough of a leap in gameplay to merit a full-fledged GTA numbered title? Or did they just think is sounded cooler? I can't claim to know, but I feel it could be a little bit of all three.
Johan
Didn't GTA 2 have all 3 cities or am I crazy? I thought at one point you can choose to go to San Andreas/Vice City or Liberty... Anyway it's a new step in the generation OP even if it is in the same console generation as IV
