A lot of people seem to overlook the fact that the ocean floor is fully mapped and explorable.  That's another massive part of the map in and of itself.

I don't expect to spend significant time jacking cars on the ocean floor. tounge.gif So counting the ocean floor is a bit bogus.

It wouldn't take very much ocean for the undersea to feel massive, because getting around underwater is pretty much like walking speed -- it will take a very long time to explore the ocean floor , in the same way that it would take a very long time to explore RDR or Skyrim on foot).

Jets, helicopters and fast cars are going to require a very big map area for us to feel like we are in a massive map.

No jacking cars, no, but that's not the point. There are lots of unique things to discover down there, like treasure, easter eggs, sunken ships, and who knows what else. Plus, you can always take the submersible to explore. You don't have to swim.

The map is big enough but the city still seems small to me. With that said it's hard to tell the scale of things from screens and my opinion might change once I play the game.

I definitely think the map is going to surprise us, its going to huge. Especially when your on the ground driving around it. I got the hump playing San Andreas today having to drive from bottom left at Mt Chilliad to North West Los Santos...and when I had to drive back, I just turned it off, wasn't worth the effort. Can only imagine the scale of GTAV and all the backroads and wilderness and sh*t.

ill-thoughts

Los Santos itself is a decent size but not big enough imo.....i think theyre just going to cram as much mountain and forest into the north part of the map as they can and make it a Great Outdoors type of game....which is cool, as long as they pack the forest with things to do.

TBH the map is huge. But I think the city itself is a little to small. But we'll see.

These help?

no, the map is really small that when you walk one step forward your already at the end of the map

Sounds like Vice City.

The only thing that scares me is the complete lack of pedestrians.

You won't be dissapointed with the amount NPCs wink.gif

Typical Gamer covered the map size partially in one of his GTA V videos, showing an aerial view from one of the videos of an area seen in a screenshot (specifically the one with the Beagle 800 flying over a beach next to the mountain). That's up on the north end of the map, on the road north of Mount Chiliad. Comparing the size of the beach in the screenshot to the size seen in the pseudo-satellite view, it's utterly gigantic. It'll probably take a minute or two longer in a single prop plane to fly over the whole map than it did to drive across Liberty City by car.

Also, you need to remember that making the map TOO big can be a whole different problem. Nobody wants ultra-long commutes, especially for a mission. If it took 15 or 20 minutes to cross Los Santos by car, you'd probably end up tired of driving by the halfway point. To say nothing of how much more massive the countryside is. Most games give illusions of much larger size by including impassable geography, winding roads, and activities and random encounters that distract you and slow your travel speed by encouraging or forcing you to stop or slow down.

I think that when you take into account the vehicles usable for travel and the random encounters that are going to be in the game (never mind the activities, main missions, and side missions), the map is big enough.

I think it'll get small FAST when cruising around in a fighter jet. And the music sucks. Did I mention that? I'll eject and walk just so I won't have to listen to the damn radio.

You're all late, the map leaked yesterday.

Judging by the street grid and the shape of the island, the size is between 7 and 8 times Red Dead Redemption. I can't wait !

Watch this video along with the gameplay trailer. Compare the character switching. You'll see how small Liberty City looks compared to LC. Something else i noticed was that the GTA 4 map zooms out 3 times while the GTA 5 map zooms out 4 times. That in itself explains a lot.
